Notices and What's On NOTICES AND WHAT’S ON 29 September 2019 Harvest Hospitality Faithfulness Wholeness Today: The flower arrangements today have been provided by the Cathedral and made by our wonderful Flower Team, who have created some amazing displays for us all to enjoy. The arrangements are truly wonderful so do go and have a closer look and a huge thanks to the team for its dedication in creating the displays which they make for us week after week for us all to enjoy. Today is our Harvest Festival when we give thanks for the wonder of God’s creation, and at the 10.15am Eucharist, gifts of food, as thanks for all we are privileged to have, will be gratefully received during the service. Afterwards any fresh produce will be given to Inn Churches and tinned/non-perishable items, such as tuna in oil, spaghetti, basmati rice, tinned vegetables, biscuits etc, will be shared between the Bradford Foodbank and Abigail Housing. Harvest Loaf We would also like to say thank you so much to Melvyn Davis Bakers of Bingley and Shipley for donating the exquisite harvest loaf. The design is so intricate and do go and have a closer look to see the harvest mouse cleverly incorporated into the sheaves. MESSY HARVEST is today from 12.30pm – 2pm, when the time will be filled with bread making, Bible reading, songs and crafts. The bulbs which have also been donated, will be planted in the West End garden area where we hope to make a wonderful carpet of colour in the Spring. All are welcome to come and share in this time. REVISED SEATING ARRANGEMENTS. Throughout September, we have been experimenting with revised seating in the nave and a nave altar. This is to discover whether or not the choir is better able to lead the congregation in singing from their revised position. We are now seeking your views, so please pick up a feedback form today to give us your views and hand it back to one of the Churchwardens. If you prefer to give verbal feedback please do so to one of the clergy or Churchwardens. We need your views by early October please so that feedback can be discussed by the community committee in mid October. Thank you. Jane says: “Dear family and friends, Basically at home for the second 10 days of September l have journeyed into Bradford twice by walking down to Gilstead, along Titus Salt Jr's carriage drive past his North and South Lodges, through Roberts Park, where the sculptured alpacas gaze at the lofty Salts Mill complex and his church, up Victoria Road to the A650 in Saltaire. That was 5000 steps. I have also woven some local canal side and riverside and reservoir walks into my days’ agendas, enjoying the birdsong and watching barges and bargees! I have been blessed with good weather and good health! l have broken through the 300,000 steps for September barrier..... and l have helped at a fundraising event at BRI - my role was to escort abseilers up all the steps and give them encouragement before their descent! The icing on the cake was that they let me abseil too!” Jane has been doing these steps, even whilst on holiday and if you would like to sponsor her, please sign the form on the Sound Desk. Thank you. KEEPING IN TOUCH The October edition of Keeping in Touch is now available with all the latest news and interviews with the people behind some of our biggest events next month. Make sure you pick up a copy today or view it on our website. A message from Abigail Housing. “ABIGAIL HOUSING thank YOU, at Bradford Cathedral, for your continued and generous support of our residents by way of food donations. Abigail Housing's Bradford Destitution Project currently houses 19 asylum seekers, and we rely entirely upon grant funding and donations. Without your valuable support we would not be able to provide our residents with vitally needed provisions. Once again thank you! If you want more information of what we need, please speak to Alison or Jasmine Woolley.” STAMPS FOR SUDAN l have placed a large order with the Church Association for Sudan & South Sudan for commemorative stamps for you to use when you send Christmas cards (and throughout the year). They come in batches of 20s and 50s, first class or second class, and l have a few of the continental rate - usually you need to stick on two per envelope. Costs you the same as it would from the Post Office, but this way you are supporting poorer people! For more information, and to place orders, please contact me. Thank you – Jane Tarver PEOPLE WANTED FOR POETRY We're looking to record a short video for one of the poems by our Poet in Residence, focussing on the environment. We're looking for two people to feature in the video and to record a verse each. We're open to anyone who is interested in taking part, but ideally would like one voice to be international. If you're interested please e-mail [email protected] CATHEDRAL CHRISTMAS CARD We are currently finalising the details of this year's Bradford Cathedral Christmas card and we’ll be updating everyone shortly about when they'll be made available. • Friends of Bradford Cathedral Newsletter Spring 2016
Friends of Bradford Cathedral Newsletter Spring 2016 Letter from the Chairman Dear Friends As I write this, the England cricket team is in the ascendancy at Headingley and the sun is shining! Long may it continue. First: an apology. It seems that some of you who receive your mailings through the post have fallen off the list. (I realise you may not be reading this if that’s the case ….!) If you know of someone in this predicament, do please contact me as soon as possible. Can I take this opportunity to encourage you to help the Friends by using email as your preferred means of receiving information? The cost of sending out 60+ lots of paperwork by post is becoming a real worry, as I’m sure you understand. The cost of postage, paper, labels and envelopes is not insignificant; in addition, it takes quite a time to print and collate the papers, put them in the envelopes and get the labels on. I can guarantee that we will not divulge any information we hold: it will be completely safe. To those of you who allow us to use email, our heartfelt thanks. If you are able to switch to email, do please contact me – thank you. You will have read in the AGM literature of the projects the Friends have supported during the year. Please come and pay us a visit – both the Close and the Cathedral are looking particularly fine, especially now that this phase of the outside work has been completed. In addition, as we await the appointment of a Canon Precentor, our hard- pressed Cathedral staff will appreciate your support and your prayers.

He’s not talking search for prayer therefore is the here about kneeling or standing with defining challenge of our lives, the only hands outstretched (the ancient reliable hope for meaning.' physical posture often used in the Dean Jerry church these days when the Lord’s Prayer is said) but rather about what is going on when we pray… our approach to God, framed by the Lord’s Prayer. • Help Bring Back the Forests of Bradford at the Next Cathedral Tree-Planting Day
Date: 15th November 2019 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRESS RELEASE Help bring back the forests of Bradford at the next cathedral tree-planting day At the tree planting site in 2018. 1 HOSPITALITY. FAITHFULNESS. WHOLENESS. [email protected] Bradford Cathedral, Stott Hill, Bradford, BD1 4EH www.bradfordcathedral.org T: 01274 777720 F: 01274 777730 Following last year’s successful tree planting day, Bradford Cathedral will be once more encouraging people to come and help bring greenery back to parts of the city. The concept began with the Bradford Cathedral Wood Project about three years ago and so far over 800 trees have been planted already in the area, with so many now on the previous site that a new space is being used for 2019. The tree planting day is on Saturday 23rd November from 10am – 3pm and anyone can come along and take part, and there will be people on hand to help with plenty of spades and tools to help: all you need to bring along is yourself and a good pair of shoes. Some of the trees which will be planted have been provided by Government grants, and include oak, ash, birch, walnut, hawthorn and Guelder-rose. Mike de Villiers of the EcoGroup: “Trees are the natural cover of this country, and we really need to reinstate them and overturn the damage that we, as humans, have done over the centuries. We cleared trees. We think of this country as a green and pleasant land of fields, but if you think about the Roman era, they had to battle through forests.

Date: Monday 23rd August FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRESS RELEASE “Art, like life, has a beautiful way of unfolding”: Bradford Cathedral and Kala Sangam join up to exhibit art created during the pandemic The exhibition of pieces by collective ‘Aire Valley Arts’ will run from Wednesday 1st September through to Thursday 28th October at Bradford Cathedral and Kala Sangam, starting with an opening event Sixteen months after the last Artspace exhibition, art is returning to Bradford Cathedral this Autumn with Aire Valley Arts’ new exhibition ‘Unfolding’. The pieces, created by the collective, will be displayed in the brand-new exhibition ‘Unfolding’, which will be held between the Cathedral and the Kala Sangam Arts Centre. Nature Unfolding, a watercolour piece by Jane Fielder What is ‘Unfolding’? “Art, like life, has a beautiful way of unfolding in its own exquisite way and in its own natural time frame. 1 “We may start with an idea, a concept, a vision, but the real beauty, in art and in life, is often found when we allow a natural, unforced, free-flowing unfolding.” The resulting exhibition, ‘Unfolding’, is a celebration of this natural, creative process. The artwork that will be showcased was created during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. Smoggy Shipley, an oil piece, by David Starley Jane Fielder, of Aire Valley Arts, says: “At the start of the pandemic, no one could have predicted what would happen in 2020 and 2021 and the results of each artist’s journeys were, as then, totally unknown. “All that was clear was the commitment of all of the artists to allow the exhibition to develop its own momentum, direction and content.
