Should you wish to have a confidential discussion about this role, please email me at [email protected] to arrange a conversation. With my prayers and best wishes The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine Dean of Bradford 2 About this role The Chapter of Bradford Cathedral seeks to appoint an outstanding musician to the position of Sub- Organist and Assistant Director of Music, from 26th August 2019. As a Cathedral our vision is to be a centre of excellence for traditional church music and musical education within the Anglican Diocese of Leeds. We also seek to bring people to the Christian faith through worship and music of a high quality. The new Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music position is at the heart of that vision as we continue to recruit new choir members and to build up our congregations. This role is particularly suited to an organist towards the beginning of their career who wants to work as part of an ambitious music department in an increasingly busy cathedral. We expect our applicants to be hard-working and enthusiastic, and to be willing to be fully part of the life of Bradford Cathedral. If you would like an informal conversation about this role, please be in touch with Alex Berry, Organist & Director of Music ([email protected] / 07507 456 741). 3 The Music Department and Cathedral Choir Personnel Alexander Berry has been Director of Music since January 2017. He is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the musical life of the cathedral. He is answerable to Chapter, and line-managed by the Precentor, the Revd Canon Paul Maybury. The Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music will be managed by the Director of Music. The music department also seeks to appoint a part-time Music Department Administrator and part-time Choir Matron from September 2019. The Cathedral Choir The independent lines of boy and girl choristers sing for the majority of the Cathedral Choir services. The choristers are aged from 7 to 13, and have complete parity. There is no choir school, so the boys and girls are recruited from a number of different schools from across the local area. In 2018 a new strategy was launched to recruit new choristers to the Cathedral Choir, and across the year we recruited 15 new girls and 10 new boys. It is our aim to have 20 children in each choir. Full choristers receive free singing lessons and theory tuition. The back row of the choir is made up of three constituent parts: Lay Clerks: A pool of 25 male and female volunteer singers from across the local area, who sign up to sing for services throughout choir term. We are seeking to grow our pool of singers over the course of 2019. Choral Scholars: Since 2015 the back row has been augmented by a number of paid choral scholars, most of whom are recent graduates. Junior Choral Scholars: When choristers retire from the front row, they receive the opportunity to sing with the altos, tenors and basses of the choir. The Cathedral Consort is made up of volunteer sopranos who join together with the Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars to sing around six times per term. The Consort has a wider and more ambitious repertoire and tends to sing for services outside the ordinary weekly pattern. The Saturday Singers is a choir of children who have been recruited through the Be A Chorister For A Morning scheme. The Saturday Singers sing with the Cathedral Choir once or twice a term, and give performances in their own right. The Singers are conducted by Ruth Hutton-Searle, and the Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music is their accompanist. Much of the original pipework remains in use, and blends very well with later work by Hill, Norman and Beard (1961) and Walker (1977). The Cathedral is currently raising money to complete the restoration of the organ. The work is being undertaken by the Wakefield-based organ builder, A J Carter, whose work has included the organs of Leeds Minster, Rochdale Town Hall and Worksop College. Phases 1 (the console) and II (the positive division) are now complete. Phase III (the main organ) is to be completed in 2020/21. The organ is heard regular at services throughout the week, and also at the popular Wednesday@One organ recitals. It is a comprehensive four manual instrument, with 60 speaking stops. There is a wide variety of tonal colour to be found, and the organ can do justice to any repertoire. Work in 2018 to improve the swell shutter seals and install a swell engine has dramatically improved the organ’s scope to accompany choral repertoire. The organ console has a crisp new key action, and a comprehensive combination system, including a stepper. 5 Key Responsibilities Musical The Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music will be an outstanding musician. They will attend all rehearsals and services at which the Cathedral Choir is singing, contributing by playing the organ for services, broadcasts, recordings and tours with the Cathedral Choir as required by the Organist and Director of Music. Playing will always be to a standard commensurate with that expected of a cathedral music department. The Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music will take regular rehearsals with the Cathedral Choir; there will also be opportunities to conduct the choir at services. They will work with the choristers individually or in small groups, in order to improve vocal technique, sight-reading and musicianship. The Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music will build up and deliver a curriculum for teaching choristers music theory. They will be the accompanist to the Saturday Singers. The Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music will be required to sing as part of the Cathedral Choir from time to time. The Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music will be offered the opportunity to play the organ for weddings, funerals and other larger scale services or events at the cathedral, at the agreed cathedral fee. They will take a share in the organ or piano playing for Diocesan events, for which a fee will not be paid. Key services recorded for Premier Christian Radio do not carry a fee. The Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music will have the right to gain further remuneration by offering private piano and theory lessons to the choristers and junior choral scholars at an agreed cathedral rate. Music department facilities will be made available for this, as long as the cathedral diary permits. The Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music will be responsible for recruiting, training and running the Bradford Cathedral Youth Choir, when it is founded in September 2021. Administrative and Communication The Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music will be the Choir Librarian, taking responsibility for ensuring the smooth running of established systems, updating the labelling of music, ordering new music and typesetting new music, using Sibelius software. They will keep the online library for choir adults and the library database up-to-date.
