Hymn

Jesus is Lord! Creation’s voice proclaims it, for by his power each tree and flower was planned and made. Jesus is Lord! The universe declares it; sun, moon and stars in heaven cry: Jesus is Lord!

Jesus is Lord! Jesus is Lord! praise him with Alleluias, for Jesus is Lord!

Jesus is Lord! Yet from his throne eternal in flesh he came to die in pain on Calvary’s tree. Jesus is Lord! From him all life proceeding, yet gave his life a ransom, thus setting us free:

Jesus is Lord! O’er sin the mighty conqueror, from death he rose; and all his foes shall own his name. Jesus is Lord! God sends his Holy Spirit to show by works of power that Jesus is Lord! Words: David Mansell Tune: Jesus is Lord CP170

New Testament Reading Acts 16.16-34 read by Sarah Maybury

16 One day, as we were going to the place of prayer, we met a slave-girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners a great deal of money by fortune- telling. 17While she followed Paul and us, she would cry out, ‘These men are slaves of the Most High God, who proclaim to youa way of salvation.’ 18She kept doing this for many days. But Paul, very much annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, ‘I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.’ And it came out that very hour. 19 But when her owners saw that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market-place before the authorities. 20When they had brought them before the magistrates, they said, ‘These men are disturbing our city; they are Jews 21and are advocating customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to adopt or observe.’ 22The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates had them stripped of their clothing and ordered them to be beaten with rods. 23After they had given them a severe flogging, they threw them into prison and ordered the jailer to keep them securely. 24Following these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26Suddenly there was an earthquake, so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened. 27When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. 28But Paul shouted in a loud voice, ‘Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.’ 29The jailer called for lights, and rushing in, he fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30Then he brought them outside and said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ 31They answered, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.’ 32They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33At the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire family were baptized without delay. 34He brought them up into the house and set food before them; and he and his entire household rejoiced that he had become a believer in God.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

6 John 17.20-26

20 ‘I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, 21that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, 23I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 ‘Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me. 26I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ

Affirmation of faith

Let us declare our faith in the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; he was buried; he was raised to life on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures; afterwards he appeared to his followers, and to all the apostles: this we have received, and this we believe. Amen. cf 1 Corinthians 15.3-7

Prayers of Penitence

Christ died to sin once for all, and now he lives to God. Let us renew our resolve to have done with all that is evil and confess our sins in penitence and faith.

Silence

Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. We are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light. Amen.

May the God of all mercies cleanse you from your sins, and restore you in his image to the praise and glory of his name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession Led by Jane Thompson

In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father.

After each section either of these responses may be used:

Lord in your mercy Lord, hear us. Hear our prayer. Lord, graciously hear us.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen

Hymn

During this hymn a collection is taken The gifts of the people are presented and the table set with bread and wine

At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, every tongue confess him King of glory now: ‘tis the Father’s pleasure we should call him Lord, who from the beginning was the mighty Word.

At his voice creation sprang at once to sight, all the angel faces, all the hosts of light, thrones and dominations, stars upon their way, all the heavenly orders, in their great array.

Humbled for a season, to receive a name from the lips of sinners unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious, when from death he passed:

9 Bore it up triumphant with its human light, through all ranks of creatures, to the central height, to the throne of Godhead, to the Father’s breast; filled it with the glory, of that perfect rest.

Name him, Christians, name him, with love strong as death, but with awe and wonder and with bated breath: he is God the Saviour, he is Christ the Lord, ever to be worshipped, trusted, and adored.

In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue all that is not holy, all that is not true: crown him as your Captain in temptation’s hour; let his will enfold you in its light and power.

Surely, this Lord Jesus shall return again, with his Father’s glory, with his angel train; for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of glory now. Words: Caroline M Noel Tune: Camberwell CP380 Prayer of Preparation

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation. In your loving care you spread before us the table of life and give us the cup of salvation to drink. Keep us always in the fold of our Saviour and our Shepherd, your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Blessed be God for ever.

10 Great Thanksgiving Prayer Prayer E

We give you thanks and praise for the gospel we have received. Christ died for our sins. Alleluia. He is risen indeed. Alleluia.

Death comes to all through Adam, and sin reigns for a time. New life without end comes through Christ, and he reigns for ever. Alleluia. He is risen indeed. Alleluia.

Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting? Death is swallowed up in victory, the victory you give us in Christ. Alleluia. He is risen indeed. Alleluia.

We have been crucified with Christ, and live his risen life, to praise you for ever with angels and archangels

11 for ever praising you and singing:

We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.

On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

So, father, we remember all the Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross.

Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory.

Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again.

12 Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth.

Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven.

Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving father, for ever and ever. Amen.

Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Praise to our Maker and Mover we sing, glory and honour and blessing we bring; all our existence depends on the Lord. Alleluia!

Worthy are you who, by shedding your blood, brought from all nations a people for God. Folk of all races you call to be priests. Alleluia!

Eternal God, giver of love and power, your Son Jesus Christ has sent us into all the world to preach the gospel of his kingdom: confirm us in this mission, and help us to live the good news we proclaim; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

Hymn

We have a gospel to proclaim, good news for all throughout the earth; the gospel of a Saviour’s name: we sing his glory, tell his worth.

Tell of his birth at Bethlehem not in a royal house or hall but in a stable dark and dim, the Word made flesh, a light for all.

Tell of his death at Calvary, hated by those he came to save, in lonely suffering on the cross; for all he loved his life he gave.

Tell of that glorious Easter morn: empty the tomb, for he was free. He broke the power of death and hell that we might share his victory.

15 Tell of his reign at God’s right hand, by all creation glorified. He sends his Spirit on his church to live for him, the Lamb who died.

Now we rejoice to name him King: Jesus is Lord of all the earth. This gospel-message we proclaim: we sing his glory, tell his worth. Words: Edward J Burns Tune: Fulda CP612 Blessing

May Christ, who out of defeat brings new hope and a new future, fill you with his new life; and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

Dismissal

With the power that raised Jesus from the dead at work within you, go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia. In the name of Christ. Alleluia, Alleluia.
