M If you notice something that is incorrect, whether on the calendar or in any of the media articles, please let me know, and we will find the correct information and rectify ASAP. Our goal is to send you, our IITS residents, the most updated and correct information pertaining to activities and other articles of interest to our community. By the time you receive your April media, we will be in the spring season. Hopefully you will find the related articles of interest to you – if not, I am always open to suggestions. I am STILL looking for articles of interest to our IITS community – humor, current events around our area, perhaps a review of an exceptional restaurant you may have attended, etc. One of my goals is to have IITS featured on the cover of one of our 2018 media magazines. In talking with the Media Magazine editors, I learned that we can have a custom cover photo on our magazine for $35 per month. So, let’s think about a really great photo or two that we could use, maybe for a special occasion, and I will work with the HOA to approve the expenditure. For the past few events, there have been none or few pictures posted on FB. Would really like to have at least a few for each event, as I use our IITS FB sites to get pictures to accompany the media articles. I am looking for volunteer writers for the May media, so feel free to step up, as otherwise I will be randomly roaming the community asking for contributions . . . . To that point, our guest writer this month is Gertie Oosterhuis. She was generous enough to share a brief article outlining her early life, and sharing the differences between living in Canada vs the US (Florida), and shared pictures as well. Keep in mind that when we do not meet our minimum of 5,000 words + a month, the media company fills in with their own stuff, ads, etc. In my opinion we have lots going on, and many interesting people who can write about various topics, so there should be no need for ‘filler’. Please submit articles to: [email protected] or if you prefer to submit via handwritten articles, please place them on top of the chest by the slider door in the carport – a box will soon be moved to the front of the house, but that may take a few months, so feel free to drop your items outside the porch, or hand to Jim or me personally.

One of our major goals as the new Board is to increase our HOA membership and attendee numbers so that we have a strong voice for future liaison meetings with management. The $7.50 per year is needed to pay our liability insurance, and for better parties and events. In addition, this will enable us to have free activities periodically as well. Men’s Breakfast/Ladies Luncheon Men's Breakfast Submitted by: Jerald Cardin. #145 The IITS men enjoyed our February breakfast at the Expo on N. Hercules in Clearwater. It was a repeat performance from last year and was, I believe, just as good an experience. You know, we men enjoy our food...especially a great breakfast and the Expo does not disappoint. We demand great service as well and got it! Sign up in the activities book at the Clubhouse... Men's breakfast is the 3rd Thursday of each month. Larry Taylor will be hosting future events so if you have a favorite eatery let him know. Ladies Luncheon Submitted by Sudie Borders, #145 There is a little gem of a restaurant in Safety Harbor called Southern Fresh. It sits tucked away off Main Street in a small house reminiscent of times gone by. Nineteen ladies enjoyed the outdoor atmosphere and the hospitality of the Southern Fresh family February 15th. The food choices were smaller in number than most places we visit but there was something to satisfy every taste. Our server recommended the chicken salad platter which was actually not on the menu. Several ladies tried it and were very complimentary. Janet Gardy graciously provided door prizes for this event. Thank you for your generosity Jan ! It is hard to believe that the winter season is almost behind us now and soon our Northern friends will depart. Just "yesterday" we were anxiously awaiting their arrival. I hope all of you know how much you are missed by those of us who live year round in Paradise. Our IITS family will not be complete until you return once more. A On February 16 we had our 1st Friday Fish dinner, held on the 1st day of Lent. We had over 60 attendees, and everyone enjoyed the evening. A cribbage tournament was held at the clubhouse on February 20, with Jean McDonald being the lucky winner! On February 24 We celebrated the annual Can-Am party. The choir started the evening off with patriotic music from Canada and the U.S, then we had a dinner of roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and cherry delight for dessert. Entertainment was provided by DJ Wiggles, with the attendees dancing the until the music shut down. One hundred and three tickets were sold for this popular event. Thanks Larry and Kris and your team for a great evening! On Feb 28 we had our monthly ladies Breakfast posse at Village Inn, with a great group of ladies. Karen Custy, who is normally in charge of the breakfast was unable to be there for health reasons. She was greatly missed. The Community Yard Sale was held on March 1 – 3. The Game Day was held on March 4, with Strawberry shortcake served Haz to Go event on March 13 – have not heard any details, but looks like this was a success. March events after the publication date of the media will be shown on the May media. My apologies for any event not mentioned.

Mainsail Art Festival Saturday, April 21, 2018 – Sunday, April 22, 2018 You won't be surprised to learn that St. Pete/Clearwater – with all of its artsy, waterfront allure – hosts one of the nation's most magnetic art festivals. Mainsail Arts Festival, held annually over two days in April, routinely draws 100,000 attendees to downtown St. Pete's Vinoy Park, where 200-plus visual artists and craftspeople display their work against sparkling Tampa Bay. Better yet: Admission to the festival is FREE. Safety Harbor Songfest Saturday, April 7, 2018 – 11 AM to 10 PM, Waterfront Park, various prices Safety Harbor Songfest is an eclectic and exciting music festival featuring more than 20 nationally-touring artists, even some Grammy winning talent comes back to Safety Harbor Waterfront Park. Beer & Burger Throwdown Saturday, April 14, 2018 12 – 6 PM, Waterfront Park $5 for adults The Beer & Burger Throwdown returns for its 4th year in Safety Harbor. This event features free samples from local craft brewers and many of the best burger restaurants and food trucks all in the same place. There is Live Music all day, competitions, outdoor games, kids zone, and more. Proceeds benefit the Safety Harbor Chamber Foundation. April 6th., Baseball Outing Bob Newman, Lot #46 he game is the Clearwater Threshers vs. the Dunedin Blue Jays on April 6, 2018 at Spectrum Stadium with the game starting at 6:15 PM. After the subsidy from the HOA, Tthe tickets are $18 per person and includes the game, food and fireworks. Doors open at 5:30 PM and food is served from 5:30-8 PM. Food includes all-you-can-eat hamburger sliders, all beef hot dogs, BBQ pulled chicken, black beans & corn, chips, peanuts, ice cream sandwiches, soft drinks and bottled water. Liquor service is also available for a price and 16 oz. draft beer for just $2.50 for 2 ½ hrs. The seating is in a covered area that is protected from the elements (but not foul balls). Cushion seats, bar type chairs and standing areas are available by the first base area of the park. Invite your friends and family to join you for an evening of fun. Even if you aren’t a baseball fan, this is a fun event to be with your fellow IITS friends and neighbors. The deadline for tickets is Wednesday, April 4th. You can park at the NE lot south of the stadium which is beyond Buffalo Wild Wings. Parking is $3. Handicapped parking is down by the entrance to the tunnel. Enter the tunnel stadium entrance, turn left and take the elevator directly to the Big Shark Café on the 3rd. floor. This is an open-air covered deck and offers a supreme view of the action. Very little walking is required, which should be appealing to those with mobility issues. Hope to see you all there. A man was driving along the highway, and saw a rabbit hopping across the middle of the road. He swerved to avoid hitting the rabbit, but unfortunately the rabbit jumped in front of the car and was hit. The driver, being a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulled over to the side of the road, and got out to see what had become of the rabbit. Much to his dismay, the rabbit was dead. The driver felt so awful, he began to cry. A woman driving down the highway saw the man crying on the side of the road and pulled over. She stepped out of her car and asked the man what was wrong. "I feel terrible," he explained, "I accidently hit this rabbit and killed it." The woman told the man not to worry. She knew what to do. She went to her car trunk and pulled out a spray can. She walked over to the limp, dead rabbit, and sprayed the contents of the can onto the rabbit. Miraculously the rabbit came to life, jumped up, waved its paw at the two humans and hopped down the road. 50 meters away the rabbit stopped, turned around, waved and hopped down the road, another 50 meters, turned, waved and hopped another 50 meters. The man was astonished. He couldn’t figure out what substance could be in the woman’s spray can!! He ran over to the woman and demanded, "What is in your spray can? What did you spray on that rabbit?" The woman turned the can around so that the man could read the label. It said: "Hair spray. Restores life to dead hair. Adds permanent wave." Storks... Two storks are sitting in their nest: a father stork and baby stork. The baby stork is crying and crying, and father stork is trying to calm him. "Don't worry, son. Your mother will come back. She's only bringing people babies and making them happy." The next night, it's father's turn to do the job. Mother and son are sitting in the nest, the baby stork is crying, and mother is saying "Son, your father will be back as soon as possible, but now he's bringing joy to new mommies and daddies." A few days later, the stork's parents are desperate: their son is absent from the nest all night! Shortly before dawn, he returns, and the parents ask him where he's been all night. The baby stork says, "Nowhere. Just scaring the heck out of college students!"

16 ISLAND IN THE SUN SENTINEL APRIL, 2018 E Spotlight on Denny and Molly Johnson, Lot 135 t is my pleasure to introduce Denny and Molly Johnson. Denny is a Wisconsin native and Molly hails from Iowa. I This lovely couple met in 2000 through a mutual friend. Molly was working and living in Sioux City Iowa while Denny’s home was in Alabama. They successfully maintained a long distance relationship and the time came when they decided to be together. Denny had decided to move to Iowa, and Molly got to thinking the weather in Alabama was far more favorable, and they agreed she would move there. They married in 2001 and Molly got a new job in her field of manufacturing management, while Denny continued in his position as an accountant for Michelin Tire Co. They have a blended family of 4 daughters and one son, 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons. When I seemed surprised that there were so many grandchildren, she explained that they include the spouses of their grandchildren in that count. They are a close knit family, demonstrating this as the light of texts flashing regularly as we talked. Although Alabama was an enjoyable place to live they decided after they retired 3 years ago to relocate near family. They choose Pinellas County; Denny’s daughter and her family live in Seminole. Their first home was a condo in Safety Harbor, and they loved the location and community. However, it was deserted during the day, since most of the residents worked. Molly asserted one day “I’m bored”, and they decided to look around for a community with activities. Molly saw an ad for Island in Sun and she and Denny decided to start their search here, fully intending to see a lot of places. Wow! They liked everything about IITS; the beauty of the trees and landscaping, how well kept it was, the amenities, activities and one of the new homes really resonated with them. They bought in November of 2017 and are happy they did. Both Molly and Denny are avid golfers and have found friends in the park to enjoy the game with. They like taking walks together beginning at their front steps to the R. Wilson trail and to Target and every few weeks enjoy going to walk at the beach. They also enjoy traveling and playing cards. Molly belongs to a running club out of Safety Harbor and enters races regularly. Molly has tried nearly every community activity except mahjongg. Some activities she enjoys that are new to her are pickleball, Texas hold-em and shuffle board. I met Molly at a Texas Hold-em game and invited her to be in our IITS ladies golf league. She enthusiastically said “YES!” What a joy she is! I bet many of you have met Molly and Denny at one of the events or activities. Welcome to the IITS community Denny and Molly!

He and his wife, who predeceased him, lived in the park for over 20 years. P Karen Abeyta, #79, is in Colorado to attend the funeral of her brother who passed away at age 52 of a stroke. Get well wishes go to Karen Custy, #229. I’m told she fell at the pool several weeks ago, but recovery is slow. She has been using a walker just to get around her house. Feel better soon, Karen! Bob Newman, #46, had heart attack #5. This prompted him to resign from the HOA board in an effort to reduce stress in his life. Good luck, Bob Gertie & Jack Oosterhuis, #71, had a close call getting into an accident on Belcher Road. Luckily, they were fine physically. The car, however, did not do so well. A It Only Takes One Mosquito Bite, Even Indoor Pets are at Risk! So what is a heartworm? It’s a parasitic worm that lives in the heart and pulmonary arteries of an infected animal. The worms travel through the bloodstream in order to get to the vessels of the lungs and the heart chamber. It takes about six months after the initial infection for this to occur and the heartworms cause damage to arteries and vital organs along the way. Several hundred worms can live in one dog for five to seven years. Symptoms of heartworm infestation can include labored breathing, coughing, vomiting, weight loss and listlessness, and fatigue after only moderate exercise. However, some dogs exhibit no symptoms at all until late stages of infection. Heartworm disease is serious and can be fatal. Myth 1: My pets stay indoors so they’re not at risk. Who hasn’t had a mosquito buzzing around inside before? It only takes one mosquito bite for your pet to get heartworms. Even strictly indoor cats are at risk. Heartworm infestation can happen to any dog (as well as cats and some wild animals), but since mosquitoes are their carriers, dogs who live in hot, humid regions—conditions in which mosquitoes thrive—are at the greatest risk. The disease has been seen in all 50 states, but is most common in or on the East Coast, southern United States and Mississippi River Valley. Myth 2: I give my pet a monthly preventative, so he or she doesn’t need to be tested yearly. Actually, the majority of medications and manufacturers require a yearly test. Heartworm disease is diagnosed by a veterinarian-administered blood test. All dogs should be routinely screened with a blood test for heartworm either annually in spring, at the start of mosquito season, or before being placed on a new prescription for a heartworm preventive. Myth 3: My Pomeranian, with a thick coat, is not at a great risk of getting heartworms. All animals are at risk for contracting heartworms, including dogs, cats, and other wild animals, no matter the thickness of their coat. How do I ensure my pet doesn’t get them? The good news in this situation is that heartworms are easily prevented with inexpensive, chewable pills that are available with a prescription from a veterinarian. Pills are usually administered monthly and can be given to dogs under 6 months of age without a blood test, but older animals must be screened for the disease prior to starting medication. There are also topical products available that can be applied to the skin. What happens if my pet has heartworms? If you suspect that your animal may be exhibiting signs associated with the symptoms of heartworms, take them to a veterinarian for a thorough examination. If your pet is diagnosed with heartworms, the only FDA approved treatment is a series of injections into the dogs’ muscle. The cure has a high success rate, but usually requires hospitalization; an intense process with cage rest and leash walks. After treatment, your animal will be placed on a preventative medication to reduce the risk of infection.

I also realize how blessed I am to be here. I was born in the Netherlands in a town called Groningen, with cobblestone streets. My Mother immigrated to Canada with her children – 10 of us, with me and my twin sister being the youngest. This was in 1956, when I was 8 years old. The place we immigrated to in Canada was called Holland Marsh, and I thought ‘Wow, how dirty is this place’. It was a produce farm community, and all the roads and fields were dirt, instead of being paved. Starting over in a new country was a struggle but we survived and became a strong family; however, it was a totally different way of life. I remember that we were able to havean orange every day which was a huge treat, because we rarely had them in Holland. We grew up appreciating our new country and becoming genuine citizens. Our strong beliefs about our religion resulted in us growing up to be honest and true. We enjoyed our new lives and I made many friends along the way. I met Jack in 1965 at a church function, and we got married the following year, when I was 18. We have been married for 51 years and I thank God each day for my many blessings along the way. We now have three wonderful sons and six delightful grandchildren. Once all of our children grew up and left to start their own lives, we decided to downsize our home and start a new life in a new community We now live in Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada when we are not in Florida. We live in an adult life style community called Park Place, where all of our streets are named after the Monopoly board. Wasaga Beach is the largest fresh water beach in the world and we are fortunate to live there and enjoy all that it has to offer. We have made many friends ...continued on page 32
ISLAND IN THE SUN SENTINEL APRIL, 2018 E 31 and enjoy each and every one of them. As I look back, I realize that my life here in Florida is much the same as in Canada. We spent winters in Daytona for 17 years, where we lived on the beach and had a great time enjoying the largest salt water beach in the world. Wasaga Beach and Daytona Beach have something unique in common. Wasaga has the largest freshwater beach in the world, and Daytona has the largest saltwater beach in the world! Also, we were welcomed to our home in Daytona Beach with open arms, made many friends and still enjoy seeing them every year We bought our ‘Winter cottage” in Island in the Sun four years ago. We were welcomed with open arms, and again have made many friends that I refer to as my ‘extended family’. It is a joy to be able to spend 6 months with our friends and family in Canada, and six months with our friends in Florida. I sit here and realize how blessed we are to be able to have the best of both countries and have respect and be respected. I love Canada and it will always be my home, but I am very close to my American friends, whom I love and respect. I thank God for each day and hope I am able to smile and say hello to all I meet along my journey through life. Enjoy today for tomorrow is not guaranteed!
