Dear Department for Transport,

Department for Transport Highways Maintenance Challenge Fund – Borough of Poole Bid

I am pleased to offer my support to this bid for funding through the Department for Transport’s Highways Maintenance Challenge Fund in Poole. The schemes which form the bid are on significant routes within the South East Dorset conurbation and provide access to key employment sites, including Bournemouth University, which are central to delivering economic growth in our area, as well as contributing to the Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset Local Transport Plan aims and objectives.

Additionally, the schemes will improve connectivity between important regeneration sites in Poole and major local and regional highway arteries. The Poole Regeneration Area, located between Poole town centre and the Port of Poole, is the second largest regeneration scheme on the south coast and is forecast to generate 4,600 jobs up to 2021. The Port of Poole is a major trust port and contributes significantly to the local and regional economy. It is predicted that 2,100 jobs could be realised up to 2021, however, this is dependent on an excellent local and regional highway network.

Further to this, the bid complements transport schemes that have already been brought forward in Poole through the Local Growth Fund, and will help realise and ‘lock in’ the benefits of these, on top of those provided by the bid itself.

Councillor Drew Mellor Portfolio Holder for Transportation

www.poole.gov.uk The schemes, therefore, will have wider impacts for the region, in addition to those experienced in Poole, and will ensure the continued operation of major routes within the South East Dorset conurbation.

I welcome this submission and hope for a positive outcome.

Yours sincerely,

Councillor Drew Mellor
