FEATURED EVENT DEVENISH SILO ART OF HONOUR MEMORIAL Devenish Silos, Main Street, Devenish SERVICE Sunday 4 November, 10am Honour the commitment the servicemen and women have made to ‘our backyard’ at this 100th year Armistice Service. Take in the breathtaking silo art which represents both a First World War nurse and a modern day combat medic looking down on a field of poppies. Fifty young men and women from the Devenish community enlisted in military service. A memorial tribute by the RSL will form part of the service. BENALLA OPEN GARDENS Saturday 3 November, 10am - 4pm Be inspired as you discover five unique gardens that have a distinctive character of their own. FEATURED EVENT Refreshments, plants and condiments available for purchase at OPEN specified gardens. Owners will be available to answer gardening GARDENS questions. Proceeds to Benalla Garden Club projects and Benalla Health. Children must be supervised by an adult at all times. Please, no dogs. 'ROWILLA' 39 Grant Drive, Benalla Saturday 3 November, 10am - 4pm This garden with over 500 roses was featured in the Weekend Australian in 2013. Many rare plants are found throughout the garden. Stone steps descend from the house and lead towards an ornamental lake surrounded by shrubs and perennials. An avenue of standard roses leads to the formal rose garden with a lovely white gazebo covered in climbing roses positioned to the left. A stone bridge crosses the dry creek bed edged by natives and ornamental grasses. Many large interesting shady trees planted throughout the property complete the parkland style garden. Entry: $5. Morning and afternoon tea available for purchase.

A GARDEN OF POTS 27 Clarke Street, Benalla Saturday 3 November, 10am - 4pm This garden is inspired by a vast range of plants housed in pots including bulbs, herbs, grasses, ground covers, shrubs, hellebores, succulents, roses, pelargoniums, cannas, ferns and many more. Entry: $2. A wide range of plants available for purchase. Proceeds to Benalla Garden Club projects and Benalla Health.

THOMAS STREET 30-32 Thomas Street, Benalla Saturday 3 November, 10am - 4pm Since moving to Benalla from their farm at in the FEATURED EVENT year 2000, the Smiths have completely changed this turn of OPEN the century (circa 1903) landmark house that had neglected GARDENS driveways and sheds, into a spacious family home surrounded by a large verandah, with many garden features and lovely trees. Some of the trees were planted to mark the birth of their five grandchildren. Entry: $5. The P-12 College Waller Street Campus will hold a produce stall of items made from the school’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. The Garden Club is a proud supporter of the Program.

YATHONG GARDEN 11 Church Street, Benalla Saturday 3 November, 10am - 4pm This private garden was designed for Mrs H Ledger of Benalla in 1928 by the late Edna Walling. Heritage listed, it is one of the earliest gardens by this noted landscape designer. The garden has many of the characteristic elements used by Edna Walling; random stone paths, stone walls, a wisteria covered pergola and some original plantings. The owners have created a garden where plants are free to self seed in the Walling manner; to use old fashioned, fragrant plants, have minimal maintenance and most of all to keep alive and perpetuate the original Edna Walling vision for the garden. Due to uneven surfaces the garden is not suitable for pushers or wheelchairs and parents need to be aware of a small pond. Please, no dogs. Entry: $5 9 WEEKEND ONE 3 - 4 November FEATURED EVENTS

HAGENAUER LANE 20 Hagenauer Lane, Benalla Saturday 3 November, 10am - 4pm FEATURED EVENT This delightful garden is situated at the end of Hagenauer Lane. The garden consists of semi-formal elements with a OPEN cottage style, which includes mixed plantings of roses, salvias, GARDENS perennials and shrubs. Groovy South American tangos, charming Hungarian folk songs, soaring French melodies and majestic Australian fanfares are sure to enthrall and delight in equal measure. One of Australia’s most exciting young chamber ensembles, Arcadia Winds are quickly becoming a fixture in the national classical music scene. Entry: $35, concessions $30, students under 18 free. BENALLA MIGRANT CAMP EXHIBITION @ HUT 11 Benalla Airport, Samaria Road, BARC Hut 11 (enter via the Gliding Club entrance) Sunday 4 November, 10am - 2pm The moving photos in this exhibition tell the story of life at Benalla’s post-war migrant camp, which housed 60,000 migrants from 1949-1967. The collection houses more than 200 personal photos contributed by former migrant camp families as well as personal documents and 100s of Benalla migrant cards sourced at the National Archives that tell the story of life at the post-war migrant accommodation centre. BENALLA MIGRANT CAMP: SHORT FILM PREMIERE FEATURED EVENT Benalla Performing Arts and Convention Centre (BPACC), SHORT 57 Samaria Road, Benalla FILM Sunday 4 November, Short Film Premiere, 2pm This is the first public screening of a series of recorded interviews that document how former migrant camp residents, who were children at the time, experienced the Benalla Migrant Camp 1949-1967 (film time approximately 30 minutes). The former Benalla Migrant Camp remains a special place of significance right in ‘Our Backyard’. Well known historian Professor Bruce Pennay OAM will introduce the film and the screening will be followed by Kaffee und Kuchen in the foyer. Entry: $5, tickets available from BPACC. FEATURED EVENT VICKY THE TRUCK VICKY THE TRUCK Fawckner Drive carpark (near the Skate Park), Benalla Sunday 4 November, 11am - 4pm [FREE ENTRY] Vicky is travelling the state as part of the ‘Victorian. And proud of it.’ campaign. On board, visitors will enjoy a virtual reality experience that tells the stories of real Victorians who, through their contributions in the community, live by our shared values. Rural SAMARIA FARM - ROSEWATER DISTILLATION WORKSHOP Villages 2520 Samaria Road, Moorngag Saturday 3 - Sunday 11 November, 6am - 2pm Experience the ancient art of Damask Rose distillation. Join in picking the buds in the early morning and load the still to commence the production. Then enjoy a cooked breakfast on the verandah overlooking the farm. Follow this with a conducted tour of the farm and learn about the history that has made this place so special. ARMISTICE LIVING TRIBUTE, 3PM AND 5PM 11 November 2018 marks 100 years since the Armistice and the end of the Anzac Centenary. To acknowledge this important historical milestone, the Victorian Government presents this special street theatre performance designed to educate, raise awareness and remember a defining time in our history. This live theatre production will tell the story of Australia’s bandsmen who were both stretcher bearers and military musicians in World War One. Members of the Rose City Band will feature in this story telling performance.
