We believe diversity can accelerate showing the value and impact of fundamental HEP research to the world
4 :: outreach ::
1. Invite Society to our comfort zone 2. Explain our needs and solutions 3. Connect it to benefits of society
5 :: co-creation ::
1. Leave our comfort zone to other domains 2. Bring our methods to society’s needs 3. Connect them to our world without need to explain
6 :: outreach :: :: together :: :: co-creation ::
From Supporters to Challengers From our comfort zone to that of stakeholders From understanding to experiencing
Co-creation builds bridges across domains and allows direct interaction with society
7 :: THE Port :: a not-for-profit association ::
We demonstrate the value of 8 fundamental science to society :: Purpose and vision ::
We combine creative minds from CERN and non-profit organisations in interdisciplinary teams to work on Unite Innovators Interdisciplinary teams of handpicked individuals humanitarian technology related chosen for their field-leading expertise and innovative benefits to society minds combine humanitarian questions with state- of-the-art science, cutting-edge technology and endless fantasy. Impact Future The fusion of today’s real life problems analysis and a vision of scientific evolution of the next decades forces us to develop concepts and solutions for the future – hungry to use our expertise in challenges in new fields. Act Today Why not? There are no excuses – there is no better place than here – no better time than now – nobody more creative than you. If you just want to!
9 Hack-A-What ? A hackathon (hacking marathon) is a design sprint-like event;
often, in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers, project managers, domain experts, and others collaborate intensively on software projects.
The concept can be extended to handle all kinds of problems, in all kinds of contexts.
One doesn’t even need to be a computer programmer to join some hackathons! 10 :: challenge-based innovation :: > 20 events > 70 challenges >1200 participants
11 THE Port Hackathons :: Inclusive and Diverse Diverse pool of participants from all over the world with varied backgrounds and skill sets
We budget for travel grants for participants from far away to join us at CERN IdeaSquare

17 :: THE Port 2019 :: Green Remote Collaboration ::
Even before COVID-19 forcing us to work remotely, several motivated people (driven by particle physicists) got together during THE Port 2019 Humanitarian Hackathon to improve remote collaboration: remotely.green was born.
Making remote collaboration the obvious choice

Surveyed 333 people, the biggest downside is: 80% of the reason “ my clients join my Limited events is to meet in-person interaction other people ” Organiser of Exec Hack Guided virtual encounters

With hackathons, you think about all the things that exist already and then you think about those that you would want to exist but strangely don't exist yet. This is the whole fun of the hackathon. You group a bunch of intelligent people from a a lot of domains and different backgrounds, with a lot of different mentalities, who think differently and they collide together and make these really really cool ideas that are workable. They provide a foundation for any future products. https://vimeo.com/157105819

48h fully online hackathon to find solutions to the COVID-19 crisis: https://versusvirus.ch
Swiss-wide, incl. government and parliament
31 32 Second hackathon to tackle additional challenges, with a focus on economic recovery and after the crisis solutions
33 :: #VersusVirus :: post-hackathon
Ensuring projects are sustained after the hackathons - 250 kCHF in prizes and grants - 25-week incubation programme to bring the ideas to market
34 :: Example Outcome ::
- #VersusVirus Highlight and grant recipient - 1st place of TheGlobalHack.com in the governance area
35 :: together, we can do more ::
36 - 48 hours hackathon during the CERN summer student programme - First edition fully online due to COVID-19 pandemic - Opportunity to go global and attract participants from all over the world - Theme for 2020 : ‘working together apart: accelerating collaboration’
- 440 registrations from 82 countries - 15 mentors & 12 jury members - 27 project submissions (see https://webfest.cern/projects)
37 :: connecting people and ideas ::
When facing critical decisions, we empower to overcome limits of personal networks & information overflow
gluoNNet, founded by HEP scientists uses visual analytics and machine learning tools to connect diverse people and ideas to empower people and allow for successful collaborations
