We investigated the prevalence of such organisms in samples of bovine mastitic milk (n ϭ 714), raw meat (n ϭ 139), and vegetables (n ϭ 616). We determined the degrees of relatedness of isolates as indicated by antibiogram, staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) productivity, and coagulase gene restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. We examined 297 S. aureus isolates and found SE production in 57 (31.8%), 4 (7.8%), and 49 (73.1%) isolates from raw milk, raw meat, and vegetables, respectively. A high proportion of the isolates obtained from milk produced more than two types of toxins (mainly SEA, SEB, and/or SEC), whereas isolates from raw meat and vegetables primarily produced SEA alone. Most isolates were sensitive to cephalothin (97.6%), gentamicin (80.8%), erythromycin (79.5%), and tetracycline (72.7%), but were resistant to penicillin (90.2%) and ampicillin (88.9%). The proportion of antibiotic-resistant isolates differed according the source of the bacteria; the milk and vegetable isolates were more resistant to penicillin and ampicillin than were the meat isolates (P Ͻ 0.05), whereas tetracycline resistance was limited to the milk and vegetables isolates. The coagulase genotypes (I to XII) varied with the source of the organism, and only a few genotypes prevailed in each source: II (42.4%) and IV (24%) types in isolates from milk, IX (35.3%) and XI (45%) from raw meat, and III (40.3%) and XII (32.8%) from vegetables. These findings suggest that remarkable differences exist in antibiogram, SE productivity, and coagulase genotypes, resulting in limited clonal transmission of S. aureus into various food sources.     Alternative Forms of Marriage and Family in Colonial Korea Kim Keong-il Colonial Korea’s marriage and family system that originated in the West pro- duced diverse and complex practices, suggestions, and visions when it was introduced to Korea via Japan. These suggestions and visions crossed the boundaries of tradition and modernness and revealed dynamic and transitional characteristics of colonial Korean society. The young generation welcomed the import of the West’s marriage system and gender identity with open arms. Liberals recognized its significance in principle but called for caution in its direct application. The older generation tried hard to preserve the traditional sexual morality and marriage system. Tensions, contradictions, and confronta- tions grew as numerous opinions and claims were put forth, and intellectuals searched for new forms of marriage and family. Consequently, lively debates and discussions were carried out about the issues of temporary separation, sin- gle life, trial and companionate marriages, friendship between the sexes, and alternative family. Recommendations and ideas raised by the intellectuals were a conservative reaction to imported modernity, a modern demand against oppressed sexual morality, and a critique of and a challenge to patriarchal soci- ety. Moreover, various ideas and thoughts like patriarchy, colonialism, liberal- ism, modernity, feminism, nationalism, and socialism/communism competed in the discussions on alternative forms of marriage and family. Introduction On August 22, 1987, during the height of the democratizationmovement in South Korea, a young laborer was struck and killed by an exploding tear gas canister used by riot police to quell a massive demonstration. 21-year old Seok-kyu Lee was just one of 2000 employees at the Daewoo Shipbuilding Company on Geoje Island who participated in a protest demanding labor reforms.2) Lee’s tragic death sparked a national mourning, and soon led to demonstrations throughout the country. A few days later, in northern Seoul, over 3000 laborers and students gathered to protest the wrongful death while chanting “destroy the military dictatorship that tramples on workers.”3) And a memorial service and demonstration for the fallen laborer was organized on Geoje Island as well as on August 26. Video footage archived by the Munhwa Broadcasting Company (MBC) documented some of the salient moments of this large-scale event, including a funerary procession for Lee. The landscape restoration projects have been supported by a paradigm shift from growth-oriented to environment-oriented approaches in Korean urban planning. In this context, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has sought means to convey traditional, historical and natural values through landscape restoration. In consequence, Seoul’s landscape elements—mountains, rivers, and valleys—have been cleared of apartment buildings and urban infrastructure, and afterwards have been greened. The challenge in many of these landscape restoration projects, however, has been to convey the traditional landscape meaning of these sites while meeting today’s landscape architectural standards and requirements as well as the needs of citizens. In order to gain a deeper understanding of how to deal with these challenges, the dissertation examines existing landscape restoration projects such as the restoration of Namsan (1990–2000), the restoration of Naksan (1997–2002), and the restoration of Inwangsan’s Suseongdong Valley (2007–2012).

Hui (回) or Hui Hui (回回) is generally recognized as representative of Muslim culture in Chinese and Korean sources. From the 8th century, Korean-Muslim cultural relations accelerated as an outcome of ancient Chinese-West Asian commercial transactions along the Silk Road. These contacts between Muslims and Koreans on the Korean peninsula are borne out by references to Korea found in 23 Islamic sources written between the 9th and 16th centuries by 18 Muslim scholars, including Ibn Khurdadbih, Sulaiman al-Tajir, and Mas’ud1i. Ibn Khurdadbih was the first Arab who wrote of Muslims’ residence in the Unified Silla Kingdom (661-935CE). However, in the period of Silla, we could not find any reliable written documents in Korea to show encounters between Korea and the Muslim world. In the Goryeosa (GS) chronicle, Muslim merchants who came to Korea were described as “Daesik” (大食: Tashi).     Hunmin jeongeum: Dissemination Policy and Education Paek Doohyeon Kyungpook National University Hunmin jeongeum 訓民正音 is one of the most important elements that characterize the Korean people and nation. This article examines the process in which Hunmin jeongeum had been disseminated and taught since its invention through the late nineteenth. In terms of dissemination policy during the reign of King Sejong 世宗, he wrote and published important official documents and literary books in Hunmin jeongeum. He also had major books including the Four Books of Chinese Classics translated into Hangeul. For education, King Sejong ordered the court ministers and princes to learn Hangeul. Hunmin jeongeum was also included in the official state examinations during the reign of King Sejong. In addition, many significant efforts for the spreading of Hunmin jeongeum were made after King Sejong. As a result of the King Sejong’s dissemination policies and ensuing efforts by many of his successors, Hunmin jeongeum spread widely among the Korean people during the Choseon 朝鮮 dynasty. It is also due to Hangeul’s own merit that this official script reform was so successful that it had been persistently used and taught in the everyday life of ordinary people from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries.     “North Koreans” and Other Virtual Subjects: Kim Yeong-ha, Hwang Seok-yeong, and National Division in the Age of Posthumanism Theodore Hughes This article examines the ways in which contemporary South Korean literature negotiates new forms of transnational identity by way of post-Cold War repre- sentations of “North Korea” and “North Koreans.” Focusing on recent best- selling works by the contemporary writers Kim Yeong-ha, Hwang Seok- yeong, and Kim Hyeon-jeong’s 2003 film Double Agent, this article shows how the figure of the “North Korean” no longer points to communist threat or anticapitalist, revolutionary potential, but to a generalized separating out of people from place. If the ethnonational/developmental coincidence performed daily in 1970s/1980s South Korea has been replaced by a certain cynicism/crit- ical distance that informs the position of the neoliberal subject of globalization, the seamless movement of the “North Korean” into this regime in Kim Yeong- ha’s Empire of Lights (2006) demonstrates its powers of assimilation. In Hwang Seok-yeong’s Princess Bari (2007) and Kim Hyeon-jeong’s Double Agent, it is the very impoverishment of “North Korea” and its failure as a state that enables a reworking of a minjung subject in the form of a linkage with a transnational working class, an alliance that the text cannot locate in the now prosperous, technologized South. The adaptable, mobile figure of the “North Korean” thus becomes a contemporary site for the postnational, posthuman rearticulation of the grand recits of the 1970s and 1980s, developmentalism and anti-authoritarian resistance. D Cornell University 2016 Dissertation Abstract This dissertation seeks to examine the modern construction of language and sexuality in colonial Taiwan and Korea. It takes a transnational approach to present a circuit of colonial modernity that differs substantially from that assumed by conventional colonial history, which focuses on a uni- directional impact from imperial powers. In particular, Taiwan and Korea are perceived as cultural entities through their vertical relations with their imperial pasts, and segregated from each other as the “unimagined communities.” This research argues that the idea of “unimagined communities” enables a political engagement to examine and challenge the grounds for nationalist imagination; and this “unimagined communities” are not just as the communities that are beyond national boundaries, but also as those that are internal to Taiwanese or Korean society. In advancing this argument, this research tracks the processes of transnational exchange and translational shaping of the modern concepts of national language and literature, as well as romantic love and sexual desires in early twentieth-century Taiwan and Korea. By theorizing and historicizing the construction of modern ideas of language and sexuality, this research challenges the imperialist and nationalistic hegemonies with the notion of “untranslatability” in colonial linguistic and literary practices, and the “critical love” against the normative idea supporting intimate relationships in nation-building.

Accepted August 19, 2011) SUMMARY: This retrospective study of the patterns and efforts of the extensive vaccination programs for canine rabies control (EVPCRC) compared the prevalence rate (PR) of rabies under two different vaccination programs for dogs in Korea between 1962 and 2007. A total of 753 cases of rabid dogs were reported between 1962 and 2007, and there were 350 human cases reported in the same period. There were 518 cases (PR, 4.11) of rabid dogs reported from 1962 to 1979, when the low-egg-passage Flury strain vaccine was used, and a total of 342 human cases were observed over the same period. However, there were 235 rabid dogs (PR, 0.83) identified from 1980 to 2007 when the Evelyn-Rokitnicki-Abelseth strain vaccine was used, and only 8 human cases of rabies were observed during the same period. The prevalence of rabies in dogs during the two periods was significantly different (P º 0.01). Moreover, the year with the largest outbreak, 1975, contained 91 cases, and the PR value was 6.3. In 1963, for hu- mans, there were 103 cases, and the PR value was 0.4.
