Strains are isolated during 39 cloud events (from 2004 to 2014) gathered in four categories according to the physicochemical characteristics of the cloud waters (Blue: Marine, purple: Highly marine, green: Continental and black: Polluted, see table S1) as described by Deguillaume et al. (2014). Strains are differentiated into four main categories, according to the measured surface tension (red: σ ≤ 30, orange: 30 < σ ≤ 45, yellow: 45 < σ ≤ 55 and green: σ > 55 mN m -1, see details in text). Phylum colors correspond to those of Figure 1. All surface tension measurements are performed using the pendant drop method with an OCA 15 Pro tensiometer (Data Physics, Germany).
