But three cool women encountered at three separate parties within the first three weeks of residency convinced me otherwise. Who was I to ignore the law of threes—or the prospect of getting a totally ripped upper body?

THE BONDS IN THE BOAT Eight months later I’ve gained a helluva lot more than a good set of guns. There’s the cultural education of taking part in an ancient Eastern tradition, the peace of getting away from the skyscrapers and enjoying Hong Kong’s natural beauty and the fun of shaking up an exercise routine with something new. But most of all, it’s the camaraderie. For new expats like me, the bonds forged on and off the boat do more than just broaden fledgling social networks or provide information on where to shop or eat. While these things are critical for navigating a new life in a different country,

Globe Paddlers For those looking for a community connection of a physical nature, there is no shortage of dragon boat teams to consider. But for those looking to get the most from themselves while making the most of their time in Hong Kong, Globe Paddlers is the easy choice. “The friendships you make on our boat are friendships that last a lifetime,” says Annie Fifer, who has been paddling for five years and also serves as co-captain. “That is why we put as much emphasis on the social aspects of team culture as the physical and recruit women who will be just as committed to the Globe Paddlers family as their personal fitness. Behind the Scenes at DHL By Cat Graydon

Living in Hong Kong presents some interesting challenges…not the least of which is “How can I get an International shipment TO or FROM my home country”? For most of us, our knowledge of how this works ends when our documents and shipments are dropped off. The nuts and bolts of that question were answered on January 29, 2015 when more than 40 women boarded a coach in Central to travel to DHL’s Central Asia Hub. After passing through DHL’s airport-like security, we headed to the lift to begin our tour. Inside the lift, there was an almost life size photo of the AWA group from 2009! What a welcome! The Imitation Game

By Lindsey Gordon

Like most women I’m a sucker for a designer handbag. I think we love them so much because the normal rules of fashion don’t apply. One size fits all. You don’t have to be stick-thin or under 25 to be in the Posh Handbag Gang - anybody with credit can join. New Posh Handbag equals instant fashion kudos and – at the same time – sends out a little message about you; look how well-heeled I am! I was 44 before I joined the PHG. For years I used to press my nose up against the glass of the Mulberry shop at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 as I schlepped back and forth to Mumbai in my role as trailing spouse. I wanted to be in the Mulberry Bayswater Gang (in classic oak, natch) and that day did come…but at a price. Reader, I swapped my first-born son for a handbag. When he was 13, I brought him back to the UK to start boarding school. We were both desperately trying not to cry and an unspoken accusation of betrayal hung in the air. By the time I got back to Heathrow I was inconsolable. I was weeping into my third pinot grigio when my husband called and offered these crumbs of comfort: “Go and get yourself one of those bloomin’ bags you want and stick it on the credit card.” I came to London with a boy and I left with a Mulberry Bayswater. Such is life. Some time later, I completed my ‘collection’ with a teeny-weeny Mulberry Alexa. I am not a greedy woman; I had a large bag and a small bag and thought that would do… until I came to Hong Kong. Every woman under the age of 90 seemed to be walking around with a £1,000 bag hanging off her arm. How can these young girls afford Chanel and Louis Vuitton? And then the penny dropped. They ain’t real. “Maybe we should take a trip to Shenzhen,” my new friend said, “it’s a drag getting a visa but once you’re there, it’s a parallel universe - you can be Paris Hilton for the day and say “I’ll take it in every colour!” A bag costing £1000 in London will set you back around £40 in Shenzhen but obviously it’s not the real deal. The leather is good quality and you’d be hard pushed to tell the difference. But…and it’s a big but… buying this stuff is unlawful and I don’t condone it…but if I did I would have one of those quilted Chanel classics or a Stella McCartney in faux python skin. They even come with their very own fake certificates of authenticity. Cheeky!

Emperors from subsequent dynasties acknowledged her sainthood by elevating her status with different titles, becoming a Taoist Goddess. Although Tin Hau temples are supposed to be along the coast, you will come across some of them further inland, like the one in Kowloon. This temple located in Yau Ma Tei is an outlier due to the land reclamation in Hong Kong. Better known as Mazu to non-Cantonese Chinese, there are over 160 million people in 20 countries that venerate her, making her the second most important deity in China. Two temples are found in the west coast of the United States, such as the Tien Hau Temple in San Francisco. Macau owes its name to a supposedly Portuguese mistranslation of Matzu. Tin Hau temples indicate the Chinese diaspora, the influence of their once powerful shipbuilding culture. In Hong Kong there are over 60 temples dedicated to her. There are also smaller commemorative niches on fishermen’s boats for protection and in the hopes of a full net. Sometimes boats and temples will be adorned with colorful flags and ribbons respectively to thank Tin Hau for her protection and luck. Rooftops of these Hong Kong temples are usually green tiles, symbolising bamboo shafts representing youth and longevity. If you walk along the coast you surely will spot the deity in the main hall flanked by two demons protecting her. Though the temples may vary, some have two dragons on the tiled roof with red pearls in their mouth. The Birthday of Tin Hau Festival in 2015 takes place on May 11. Parades and celebrations will take place all over Hong Kong bringing out color and a festive mood.
