One of the few classical performers to cross over and reach the mainstream pop audience, Jenkins is a mezzo soprano who has appeared at major events all over the world. Her rise to fame began in 2003, when she sang at in London for Pope John Paul II's silver jubilee. The 30-year-old's albums, which usually contain a mixture of popular songs, hymns and arias, have received many awards and showcase her versatility as a vocalist. In 2008, reported that Jenkins had signed the biggest classical recording deal in history after she joined Warner Music on a £5.8 million, five-album contract. She is one of the most successful British soloists ever and has been credited with helping opera to appeal to a wider audience. Jenkins says on her website: "I do not understand where the idea came from that opera is only for privileged people, I am as happy singing before 70,000 people at the [in ], as I am in front of a few hundred in a small concert hall." Tickets for the Dusseldorf concert, which is due to get underway at 20:00 local time, are priced between €46.50 and €77.50 (£37.80 and £63.15).
