Introduction

CineHarp Glissandi is one of the most comprehensive harp glissandi sample libraries available today. Programmed in musically intuitive manner CineHarp Glissandi incorporates five basic scale groups broken up into a wide variety of glissandi of varying lengths and velocities. Each scale offers 18 individually recorded glissandi shapes. CineHarp Glissandi Patches @ 44.1k/24b (Gigastudio, EXS24, Kontakt 2):

• Major • Harmonic Minor • Whole Tone • Whole Half Diminished • Half Diminished • Palm FX Each scale patch includes all possible tunings of each scale.

The wav files version (44.1k/24b) contains all the files used in creating the library named according to the following formula KeyTuning_StyleDirection_Length_Dynamic.wav

For example: “CMaj_SrtUp_Short_p.wav” would be a Major that is straight, upwards and short at the dynamic of .

To install CineHarp Glissandi unzip the downloaded zip file and drag the “CineHarp Glissandi” to the directory where your samples are stored.

2 The Scales

Image: All possible scale tunings in C.

The harp’s unique tuning allows exactly seven notes, every one of which will be triggered by a finger glissando. The pedaling system of a modern classical harp allows each of the seven scale degrees to be naturalized, flattened or sharpened as desired. For scales without exactly seven notes, certain pitches must be doubled or omitted. Therefore a Whole Half Diminished scale (which is comprised of eight notes) must be played with only seven notes. To maximize the clarity of the Whole Half Diminished scale the major sixth was omitted in the tuning.

When the harp’s unique tuning did not allow a pure half-diminished scale a major sixth was added in addition to the flattened seventh. All Whole Tone Scales include only the six scale tones, of which one pitch has been doubled as necessary.

CineHarp Glissandi includes the following scales: Major Harmonic Wholetone (Whole Half) Half Minor Diminished Diminished

C C C C C Db Db Db Db Db D D D Eb Eb Eb Eb F F F Gb Gb Gb Gb G G G Ab Ab Ab Ab A A A A Bb Bb Bb Bb B B B B

3 As you may be able to tell by the file size, CineHarp Glissandi is comprised of many separate performances and uses minimal time stretching. Therefore when you are comparing a scale to a C you are actually hearing separate recorded performances in each of those keys. In general the glissandi were recorded in whole steps, using friendly half step transpositions for the remaining keys

Composing Tip:

Using a major scale glissando over non-tonic pedal tones will sound as a separate modal glissando.

For example using a C Major Glissando over a pedal F will sound as F Lydian.

4 The Glissandi Shapes, Lengths and Dynamics

Each scale consists of 18 glissandi shapes of varying shapes, lengths, and dynamics. The basic shapes consist of:

• -Straight Upward Glissando (forte and piano) (short, medium, long)

• -Straight Downward Glissando (forte and piano) (long)

• -Swirling Upward Glissando (forte and piano) (short, medium, long)

• -Ad Lib Glissando (active ad lib{forte}, gentle ad lib{piano}, up then down{piano}, ad lib with nail{piano})

Note: The dynamic of the glissando is controlled by the strike velocity on your A piano dynamic midi controller. glissando is one octave shorter in A piano sample will be triggered by a velocity strike of: 1-60 span then the A forte sample will be triggered by a velocity strike of: 61-127 identical forte glissando of the same length.

The length of the glissando is controlled by the mod wheel on your midi controller. A short glissando will be triggered by a mod wheel value of: 1-27 A medium glissando will be triggered by a mod wheel value of: 32-96 A long glissando will be triggered by a mod wheel value of: 96-127 For ad lib glissandi: A straight ad lib glissando will be triggered by a mod wheel value of: 1-64 A swirling ad lib glissando will be triggered by a mod wheel value of: 65-127*

*The swirling piano glissando has been replaced by a straight ad lib glissando played with the nail and at the dynamic of piano.

5 Key Mapping:

Each patch contains 4 octaves of active samples.

Octave 2: Downward Glissandi Octave 3 (Middle C): Upward Glissandi Octave 4: Swirling Glissandi Octave 5: Ad-lib Glissandi

All struck notes will sound a glissando of that key. For example any strike of an active C will sound a C glissando. Any strike of Bb will sound a Bb Glissando and so forth.

Composing Tip: Build your own customized up/down glissando by combining any upward glissando of your choice with any downward glissando of your choice.

CineHarp Glissandi uses no keyswitch programming.
