Guided Walks Y18 Sunbridge Wells - Discover Sunbridge Wells, an intricate maze of tunnels, which have been restored and now host a unique shopping, eating and drinking experience within characterful and quirky surroundings. Meet Alhambra; 2pm Max 15 people, Tour time; 1 hour. Sneaky Peaks - City Hall is a Grade I listed working building and a popular film location. See the splendour of the Council Chamber and Banqueting Hall or sit in the pews of the original court room which has been used by Emmerdale, Coronation Street and National Treasure. Meet Alhambra; 2pm. Tour time; 1 hour. Mirror Pool , City Park- Take a tour of the plant room and see the inner workings, mechanics and engineering of the magnificent mirror pool and fountains in the award winning City Park. Meet Alhambra; 2pm prompt. 2 x ½ hr session 2pm and 3pm, 8 people max per session. Bradford City of Film Trail - Led by the Director of Bradford UNESCO City of Film the Bradford Film Heritage Walk will take you through 100 years of film and TV production in City and cover everything from the 60's classic Billy Liar to award winning TV Drama, Peaky Blinders and everything in between. The tour will also take in City Hall which has been used extensively for film and TV. Meet Alhambra; 2pm max 15 people. Tour time; 1 hour. National Science and Media Museum (NSMM) Tour – A collection tour is your chance to explore one of the world’s most important sound and vision collections. You’ll get a behind- the-scenes glimpse at the treasures that aren’t on permanent display, including some of our most iconic objects. Meet Alhambra; 2pm. Tour time; 1 hour. 2 groups of 15 people. Heritage Trail – Nigel Grizzard, has been taking walking tours of Bradford for many years. His particular interests are Little Germany and the Merchants who came from all over Europe to turn Bradford into the Wool Capital of the World, Bradford's Jewish Heritage and Bradford's Textile Mills. Take a tour of the City to see these key places. Meet Alhambra; 2pm max 30 people. Tour time; 1 hour. Bradford Odeon - A tour of the former Bradford Odeon: a chance to see and appreciate the scale and grandeur of one of Bradford’s most iconic buildings, soon to be transformed into a major live music and events venue run by Birmingham’s NEC group. RE – Northern Cultural Regeneration Fund consideration, Bradford Odeon My name is Si Cunningham, and I am the Chair of Bradford Civic Society. Since 1942, our group has existed to preserve Bradford’s heritage and promote a more beautiful built environment for the city. Bradford has suffered setbacks and economic hardships over the last few decades, yet when I took over as Chairman last year I made a pledge to look to the future and identify opportunities for tangible, positive change. That’s why I’m writing to you today – to urge the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to award the shortlisted Bradford Odeon project the maximum possible funding from the Government’s Northern Cultural Regeneration Fund. This project will provide the West Yorkshire region with a flagship 4,500 capacity venue capable of hosting a variety of cultural attractions, bringing families back into our city centre and acting as a much-needed catalyst for wider regeneration – as restaurants, hotels and cafes open in the area. Complementing the Alhambra Theatre, National Science and Media Museum, and the magnificent City Hall, the Odeon could become the city’s iconic fourth grace – all framed beautifully by that world-renowned shared space of ours, City Park. Furthermore, a rejuvenated Bradford Odeon will be symbolic of the city’s rebirth as a cultural powerhouse and will inspire a whole new generation of Bradfordians – from all backgrounds – to immerse themselves in the creative industries.

However, since our relaunch last summer, things have gone well and we are very grateful to all our advertisers and supporters helping us to almost triple our print run. Sincere apologies if you have struggled to get a copy at times but the aim is to increase production. We want to maintain a true community magazine for Idle and Thackley that is content led with local issues foremost, not simply full of adverts; Captain Bill’s yacht will have to wait. Locally, almost the same time that Barclays closed their doors for good, the criminal element nearly blew the doors off the Post Office, taking the cash machine. The damage was horrific and had anybody been on-site the consequences are unimaginable. Sarj and the team would like to express their thanks for the heart- warming support from the local community. The Post Office is all we have now in terms of a local banking provision now so we should value this. Elsewhere, there is plenty going on with a smart conversion to offices of the Idle Coniston building plus plans for a bistro and a micropub in Thackley too. This issue contains all the old favourites plus the story of the Bradford Odeon, a building that defied many who sought to flatten it. Our new What’s On page aims to provide a directory of activities for young and old so help us publicise your activity.

Welcome from Si Cunningham, chair, Bradford Civic Society Si welcomed members to Bradford and to the magnificent Banqueting Hall in the City Hall. The visit to Sunbridge Wells, the talk on Bradford Beck coming up, the City Park project and the latest developments with the Odeon were all evidence of great civic pride in the city of which the Civic Society is a part. He hoped members would enjoy their visit and be encouraged to come back and spend longer exploring what’s on offer. Welcome from the Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford Cllr Doreen Lee Cllr Lee welcomed members with reassurances that the city is growing and thriving, but with plenty of scope for future improvements. Sunbridge Wells had been a fantastic development of great interest as were the Mirror Pool in City Square which had been very popular with families during the summer. She acknowledged that more restoration work was necessary at the top of the town. Bradford District was not just the city, but included Saltaire, Haworth, Keighley and Ilkley – plenty of interesting places to visit. Minutes of last meeting held on 29th July 2017 at Hornsea These were proposed by Paul Bedwell, seconded by Malcolm Sharman and approved by the meeting. Matters arising None. Yorkshire and the Humber Regional Overview CYH 2015 (4) 4 Fiona Spiers reported on developments in the region since the dispatch of papers: The Committee noted the report. 5. Yorkshire and the Humber Budget CYH 2015 (4) 5 Kathryn Frankish presented the budget paper. There were four first round applications for decision with a combined first round pass request of £2,597,200 against an indicative first round pass budget allocation for the meeting of £2,820,250. The Committee noted the update from the Director of Finance and Corporate Services on end of year budget arrangements. Country and Regional Committees would have the flexibility to overspend their first round pass budgets by up to 2.5% at the March 2016 meeting.

The vision is for this magazine to be a finger on the pulse of Beckfoot Upper Heaton school life. Here we will share news of all events and activities that have taken place during the last term, and keep you informed about what great things are coming up next term. Cameron Parker is a School Motivational Speaker and has been running ‘Mindset and Motivation’ webinars for us throughout the lockdowns and has been delivering workshops in school. These sessions support our young people to stay motivated, build resilience and keep organised. Cameron Parker inspires people of all ages and backgrounds around the UK, but the majority of the work Cameron and his team do are in schools and colleges, supporting students on their educational journey. Cameron also runs motivational sessions in prisons, businesses, and universities.
