@B_upperheaton

Welcome to the first edition of Beckfoot Upper Heaton's school newsletter. I'm sure you'll agree that this is a fantastic piece of work created by staff and students working together to share the achievements of our whole school community. Mrs. Boon has been the driving force behind the creation of this newsletter, ably supported by her student editorial team. I hope it will be enjoyed by all and be the first of many.

The vision is for this magazine to be a finger on the pulse of Beckfoot Upper Heaton school life. Here we will share news of all events and activities that have taken place during the last term, and keep you informed about what great things are coming up next term.

Cameron Parker is a School Motivational Speaker and has been running ‘Mindset and Motivation’ webinars for us throughout the lockdowns and has been delivering workshops in school. These sessions support our young people to stay motivated, build resilience and keep organised.

Cameron Parker inspires people of all ages and backgrounds around the UK, but the majority of the work Cameron and his team do are in schools and colleges, supporting students on their educational journey. Cameron also runs motivational sessions in prisons, businesses, and universities. Cameron has positively impacted over 350,000 young people; he knows what

Diversity and celebration We joined schools nationally to celebrate Diversity Week. This week, students were educated about what LGBTQ+ means, so we can understand the battles they might experience and

support our entire community. Every school subject had diversity as their focus.

As a member of the Beckfoot Trust we respect everyone, regardless of gender, colour, religion, sexual orientation, whether

binary or non-binary...the list goes on. Here is a taste of what we did:

The Student Parliament made buns and led a bake sale to raise money for the charity called 'Just like Us'. On Friday we had a non-uniform day, where pupils could wear any colour to show they respect everyone. Throughout the week, we have included diversity in our lessons where students were educated about why we should accept and be tolerant of everyone. In music, students looked at samba bands that take part in Pride Week and explored song lyrics related to the topic. In Design, they created superhero costumes using colours from the Pride flag, In Science, pupils learned about LGBTQ+ individuals in the world of STEM, what LGBTQ+ means, and how Science is used as a social good. English lessons featured lessons on 'Hour' by Carol Ann Duffy. They watched a short film called 'Just Like Us' and a Blackout Poetry task. French completed the 'Ma Famille' lesson.

We are proud that we provide learning experiences to promote the education of the whole child. We believe that RSE, Health and PSHCE should enable children to become healthier, more independent and responsible members of society. We encourage our students to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community. Duke of Edinburgh

From the 5th to the 16th July, 30 of our year 9 students have been undertaking their Duke of Edinburgh expeditions in order to receive their Bronze award.

They have walked a grand total of 80 miles combined, camped in weather ranging from torrential rain to blistering sunshine and collected some incredible blisters but their resilience, team work and brilliant attitude to challenges has seen them sail through the course (even when chased by hungry horses!).
