Valuation records - "Domesday Books"

Three series of valuation records were created for or by the Board of Inland Revenue Valuation Offices in connection with these duties under the 1910 Finance Act. The valuation precis, also known as Domesday Books but properly entitled Duties on Land Values, were prepared by the Inspector of Taxes. They contain entries for each hereditament in and , providing basic information relative to the valuation of the property, including the valuation assessment number, map ^reference, owner, occupier, situation, description, and extent.

The Field Books, the next series in order of compilation, were prepared by the Valuation Offices, and normally contain all the information about individual hereditaments to be found in the Domesday Books plus, in some instances, additional details descriptive of the premises. This series has been selected for permanent preversation centrally and is now available for public inspection in the Public Record Office at Kew (class IR 58). Forms 37 - Land contain information extracted from the Domesday Books, though in a different format. A copy of this form was sent to each owner. The copies which are the subject of the presentation are those which were retained by the Valuation Offices, where they are held currently. Those which have survived are now deposited in the Northamptonshire Record Office. They are only of importance where the is missing. A further series of records were the working sheet maps relating to the survey made between 1910 and 1915 for the implementation of the 1910 Act in relation to land values duties but unfortunately none have survived for Northamptonshire.
