  • Bartók Gergely: „A Török Itáliában…”
„A török Itáliában…”

  • Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur
Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur - A Partial Survey of the Discography by Ralph Moore Of nearly seventy extant recordings of this opera, a mere four have been made in the studio, so choice in that regard is limited, especially as most punters would regretfully concede that the last studio recording – made fully thirty years ago – is not in the running, as the pair of veteran singers who made it, Joan Sutherland and Carlo Bergonzi, were sadly both past their prime. Everything since has been live; especially commendable are performances by that fine singer Nelly Miricioiu but they are mostly in poor to average sound and available only on websites which make copies of “private” recordings to order. The first recording was made in 1949 and is thus in relatively primitive, vintage sound; that leaves the field open to only two studio, stereo versions conducted by Capuana and Levine respectively. Fortunately, both of those are superb; we can cast our net wider by including some excellent, live, mono recordings starring singers of the calibre of Olivero, Corelli, Scotto, Caballé, Domingo and Carreras, but inevitably compromises have to be made regarding the quality of their sound. Critics have been exceptionally patronising about the music and I am amused by the number of times I have read the death-sentence pronounced upon this verismo opera as an absurd, cheesy, one-tune vocal slug-fest, yet it remains a perennial favourite amongst some opera cognoscenti and great singer-actresses, and it is still possible to find tenors who want to sing the relatively ungrateful role of Maurizio.

  • Leoncavallo's Pagliacci
Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci - A survey of the major studio recordings by Ralph Moore Given the continued popularity of this most enduring of operatic warhorses, it is surprising how few studio recordings it has received compared with other major crowd-pleasers. I have restricted my survey to studio-made, post-war recordings in Italian on the grounds that the average modern collector will want fair (mono) to excellent (digital) sound in the original language; there are only fourteen of those, plus a radio broadcast and two film soundtracks featuring names so famous I thought it best to include them, and, finally, a live concert performance which was a prime recommendation from ‘Gramophone’, the ‘Penguin Guide’ and the ‘Classical Good CD Guide’, so I could hardly ignore it - making eighteen recordings in total. The most recent studio recording in Italian was made nearly thirty years ago in 1992; perhaps that points to a continuing shortage of singers able to do justice to the brief but very demanding role of Canio. All the great tenors of the 50’s and 60’s – Del Monaco, Björling, Tucker, Corelli and Bergonzi - recorded it in the studio, sometimes twice, each of the “The Three Tenors” made his recording in the 70’s, and there is a handful of mostly lesser accounts before Rahbari conducted that final studio version – and that’s it. Doubtless there are other, worthy, live recordings but, as I always say when doing these surveys, I can consider only a sampling of approximately 140 available and have to start – or rather finish – somewhere, so I use studio provenance and quality of singers and sound combined as my criteria for inclusion and mostly exclude live versions, which still permits me to consider five recordings from the 50’s in fair mono sound.

  • Puccini's La Fanciulla Del West
Puccini’s La fanciulla del West - A discographical survey by Ralph Moore There are sixty recordings in the catalogue but only four of those are studio-made. Discounting Puccini’s first, tentative efforts, the comparative neglect of La fanciulla del West is matched only by La rondine, which has also been given only four studio recordings and even fewer live performances. They were both composed in the middle of Puccini’s creative maturity after the premieres of the “Big Three”, yet have struggled to maintain a foothold in the operatic repertoire. There are reasons for that, but devotees of both operas are puzzled by their neglect. Fanciulla could hardly have a more auspicious premiere, being launched in 1910 on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera starring no less a lead singer than the greatest tenor of all time, Enrico Caruso, alongside the great dramatic soprano Emmy Destinn, both in roles created by Puccini especially for them – and for good measure, Pasquale Amato was Jack Rance, Toscanini conducting. Time machine, anybody? Although I do not share Puccini's belief that Fanciulla is his greatest work it contains a wealth of lovely music, not least big, well-known arias and some tender love music. It's true that the Americanisms - everyone bawling "Hello!" and randomly singing “Dooda day!” - and the rather ghastly, patronising depiction of Native Americans going "Ugh!" are rather grating and even embarrassing to a modern audience, and there is more than a hint of sentimentality about the plot, but it can be hugely enjoyable when performed by a great cast.
