Acta Aquatica Turcica, 16(4), 545-557. https://doi.org/10.22392/actaquatr.742217 Abstract The introduction of invasive fish species is considered to be one of the major causes of species endangerment in aquatic ecosystems. More than 30 non-native freshwater fish species which are introduced for the different purpose were reported in Turkey. In addition to the freshwater non-native fish species, the brackish water systems are also affected by the fish species that enter the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal. This study aimed to identify non-native fish species introduced in the Mediterranean brackish water systems of Turkey. Thirteen non-native species from eleven families were identified from 15 localities along the entire Mediterranean Coast of Turkey between 2014-2017. These species are Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782), Pseudorasbora parva (Temminck & Schlegel, 1846), Coptodon zillii (Gervais, 1848), Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758), Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792), Chelon carinatus (Valenciennes 1836), Equulites klunzingeri (Steindachner, 1898), Upeneus moluccensis (Bleeker, 1855), Upeneus pori Ben-Tuvia & Golani, 1989, Siganus rivulatus Forsskål & Niebuhr, 1775, Sillago suezensis Golani, Fricke & Tikochinski, 2013 and Sphyraena chrysotaenia Klunzinger, 1884. -
Participatory Irrigation Management (Pim) in Turkey: a Case Study in the Lower Seyhan Irrigation Project
PARTICIPATORY IRRIGATION MANAGEMENT (PIM) IN TURKEY: A CASE STUDY IN THE LOWER SEYHAN IRRIGATION PROJECT ATTILA YAZAR1 ABSTRACT Turkey began an accelerated program of transferring management responsibility for large irrigation systems to locally controlled organizations in 1993. Within 3 year, the national irrigation agency, State Hydraulic Works (DSI), had succeeded in transferring nearly one million hectares, or 61 % of the publicly-managed irrigation in the country, to local government units or to special-purpose Irrigation Associations (IAs) created at the local level. Important motives driving this fast-paced implementation were (a) rapidly escalating labor costs, (b) a hiring freeze on government agencies, and (c) consequent concern over the agency’s ability to operate and maintain systems serving the expanding irrigated area for which it was responsible. Initial results of the transfer included a doubling of irrigation fee collection rates and shifting of O&M expenditures from the public to the private sector, an accumulation of reserves in some Irrigation Associations (IAs) for future capital purchases, a reduced wage bill for system O&M personnel. This study analyzes the impact of management turnover on irrigation management and irrigated agriculture in selected IAs in the Lower Seyhan Irrigation Project in Adana, Turkey. 1 Prof. Dr., Cukurova University, Irrigation and Agricultural Structures Department, Adana-Turkey INTRODUCTION Since 1954 Turkey has had a legal framework allowing the transfer of management proceeded at a very modes pace until 1993, when the program received new impetus and the rate of transfers accelerated sharply. The World Bank played an important catalytic role in this acceleration and since that time, the program has successfully transferred about one million hectares to local management (Sevendsen et al., 1998). -

Earthquake Safety Evaluation of Large Dams in Lower Seyhan Basin, Turkey
"Science Stays True Here" Advances in Ecological and Environmental Research (ISSN 2517-9454, USA) | Science Signpost Publishing Earthquake Safety Evaluation of Large Dams in Lower Seyhan Basin, Turkey Hasan Tosun Full Professor, Civil Engineering Department, Eskisehir Osmangazi University, 26480, Eskisehir, Turkey. Received: April 01, 2020 / Accepted: May 12, 2020 / Published: Vol. 5, Issue 07, pp. 217-229, 2020 Abstract: The seismic hazard of a dam site based on the peak ground acceleration and risk rating of the dam based on the capacity of the reservoir, the height of the dam, the evacuation requirements, and the potential downstream damages are the dominant factors acting on the general stability of dams. This paper summarizes the methods considered for earthquake safety evaluation and introduces the results of a study, which was performed for the large dams, namely Berdan, Catalan, Seyhan, Sanibey and Nergizlik dams in Lower Seyhan basin. The investigation area is structurally cut by numerous faults, which are resulted by East Anatolia Fault System. The seismic hazard analyses have indicated that peak ground acceleration changes within a wide range for the five dam sites of this area. The total risk analyses depending on the seismic hazard rating of dam site and risk rating of the structure have concluded that most of these large dams have high-risk class for the metropolitan area. Keywords: dam, earthquake, seismic stability, total risk 1. Introduction There are mainly two important factors acting on total risk for dam structures: (1) the seismic hazard rating of dam site and (2) the risk rating of the dam and appurtenant structures. -

SEAWATER INTRUSION IN COASTAL AQUIFERS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN COAST OF TURKEY Gültekin Günay ABSTRACT Turkey has a coastal line of 1200 km along the Mediterranean Sea. At the coastal plains which are situated in the east-west direction along this coastal line seawater intrusion is observed. Among the coastal plains situated along .the Mediterranean, Dörtyol-Erzin, Mersin-Berdan and Efrenk plains, Silifke-Ovacık plain, Içel-Gilindire plain, Gazipa,sa plain, Finike-Kumluca plain and Demre plain, located from the east to the west, respectively, are the ones at which the problem of salinity is most frequently observed. In this article, the geo - graphical and socio-economic features of the mentioned plains, general problems in the coastal aquifers and the geology and hydrogeology of these plains are studied separately and the maps and cross-sections of the plains are presented. The present state of seawater intru - sion at the plains is also comprehensively studied. 265 TURQUÍA INTRODUCTION south direction. The White-Breasted Kingfisher, Halcyon Smyrnensis, in Turkey: on the Occurrence of an Endangered Species
Aves 19 The White-breasted Kingfisher, Halcyon smyrnensis, in Turkey: On the occurrence of an endangered species by Vincent van den Berk and Max Kasparek Abstract: The size of the Turkish population of the White-breasted Kingfisher is estimated to be about 100-150 pairs of which approx. 75% are concentrated in five localities. This makes the species vulnerable. A distribution map is given. Key words: Alcedinidae - Turkey - Middle East - endangered species - zoogeography 1. Introduction The White-breasted Kingfisher is a candidate for a Turkish Red Data Book. The knowledge of its distribution, population size and the location of its breeding sites is essential for any conservation. Although accurate counts are still rare, the present knowledge will be summarized here. A dot map of the distribution of this species in Turkey has been published by KUMERLOEVE (1961) and a less detailed map by CRAMP (1985). During the past 25 years, bird-watching activities have been increased enormously in Turkey and an improved and more detailed dot map can be presented here. 2. Records 2.1. Breeding distribution From the surroundings of izmir, KROPER & HARTLAUB (1875) reported that the White-breasted Kingfisher "breeds at big rivers" and KROPER collected one clutch on 4.5.1894 (KUMERLOEVE 1961). However, no further records have become known since then. At present, the known northernmost breeding area is the lower Btiyiik Menderes valley where breeding season records are available even from the last century (SELOUS 1900) and breeding has been confmned several times in the surroundings of Soke since 1980 (KOCH and many other observers). -

Many of the species belonged to these genera have been used for aquaculture products. Although their main native distribution areas are tropical and subtropical regions, they have spread to other areas due to their high invasive characteristics. This study was aimed to investigate the distribution of genus Oreochromis in the East Mediterranean Region of Turkey. The study was conducted at 18 stations located in Adana and Mersin from 2014 to 2017. The introduction of the species in these systems was mainly recorded weed control, transfers of fisherman, and escape from aquaculture facilities. However, the distribution of genus Oreochromis in Turkey and their effects on the aquatic ecosystems are unknown. The results showed that the species of genus Oreochromis were easily adapted the different conditions such as various flow rates, salinity, and temperature. -
