You’re going to love this show. Directors Katherine Sturt-Scobie and Tany Cleary, along with Musical Director Melanie Shark, have worked hard all summer with their cast and crew, coaxing the best out of the entire team. Here at GAOS we find it hard to believe that ten years have elapsed since the Really Youthful Group’s first production,Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, in 2004. The GAOS kids who brought us that show have since all grown up and taken the valuable experience they gained into the world of study and work. We like to believe that it has stood them in good stead, and are sincerely grateful to Katherine and Tany for upholding the tradition. We hope you’ll help us maintain another tradition, and turn out in enthusiastic numbers to cheer on the goodies and hiss at the baddies in our 2014 pantomime Once Upon a Time, which will be performed, exceptionally, here in Nyon at the Théâtre de Marens. In the meantime, however, sit back, enjoy the show and allow yourself to be carried away by what’s happening on stage – with these youngsters: “You can’t stop the beat”! They have performed together in over eight shows, as well as enduring the hellish International Baccalaureate. Tany has graduated after two years studying Musical Theatre Higher National Diploma at Stratford-upon-Avon College and is doing her B.A. top-up year at Amersham and Wycombe College. She hopes one day to perform on the West End. In her spare time she has trained to be a massage therapist. Katherine is a third-year psychology student at Lancaster University. She has previously worked back-stage on make-up and costume, as well as choreographing many stage fights. After directing a production ofThe Woman in Black, Katherine jumped at the chance to direct such an amazing show as Hairspray. Choosing Hairspray was a simple decision – there is no show with more colour and vibrancy. They both knew that it would bring a challenge to the youth of GAOS due to the amount of dance numbers and harmonies. Hairspray arguably has the best juxtaposition of sincerity, energy and enthusiasm. The Hairspray team hope you enjoy the show as much as they’ve enjoyed putting it together. 3 Climb every mountain, Ford every stream, Drive every motorway, Cross every sea... She is a singer-songwriter who was born and raised in Geneva and has been involved with music and musical theatre for her whole life. She has been delighted to work with the GAOS cast this summer in realizing her favourite musical and helping the singers reach their full potential. While Geneva will always be her home, she plans to continue her career in the music industry in the United States, probably not in Baltimore, but maybe New York! She is determined to help talented musicians navigate the ever-changing and complex music industry. In her free time, Melanie enjoys writing songs, doing Pilates, walking her adorable dog and watching an unhealthy amount of TV. Her favourite thing about Hairspray is how each quirky character is able to bring the audience to tears (of joy and sadness) while also communicating an important message to the world – everyone comes in different shapes, sizes and colours, and they can all dance, sing and live in harmony. That message is especially conveyed in “Good Morning, Baltimore”, “I Know Where I’ve Been” and “You’re Timeless to Me”. It is a musical based on the 1988 John Waters filmHairspray . The musical’s original Broadway production ran for over 2,500 performances and closed in January 2009. Hairspray has also had national tours, a London West End production, and numerous foreign productions. It was adapted as a 2007 musical film starring Zac Efron, John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken and Queen Latifah. “Pleasantly plump” teenager Tracy Turnblad muses about her love of dancing and her desire to be famous. After school, Tracy and her best friend Penny watch theThe Corny Collins Show. Tracy begs Edna, her shy and plus-sized mother, for permission to audition. Edna, fearing that Tracy will be laughed at due to her weight, refuses. After gaining permission from her father, Wilbur, Tracy auditions for the show and bumps into teenage heart-throb, Link Larkin. Velma Von Tussle, the racist producer of The Corny Collins Show, rejects Tracy, as well as a black girl, Little Inez. Back at school, Tracy is sent to detention for her “monumental hair-don’t”. There she meets black dancer Seaweed J. Stubbs, who teaches her several new dance moves. When Corny Collins sees how well Tracy can dance, he gives her a place on the show. Edna Turnblad receives a call from Mr Pinky, the owner of a plus-size dress shop, for an endorsement. Edna has dreamt of making her “own line of queen-sized dress patterns”. She is given a huge makeover and accepts to be Tracy’s agent. At school, where Penny and Seaweed have developed a liking for each other, signs of Tracy’s fame are evident. Seaweed invites all of them to his mother’s record shop for a party, where Tracy rallies everyone to march against the station’s segregation policies on the following day. During the protest, Velma calls the police and almost everyone is arrested. After the march, most of the women are bailed, except Tracy. Wilbur and Edna are left destitute because of the money it cost them to bail everyone. During the night, Link sneaks into the jail and releases Tracy. Punished by her mother, Penny is rescued by Seaweed. Both couples declare their love for one another. After escaping from their respective prisons, the couples seek refuge at Motormouth Maybelle’s Record Shop. But The Corny Collins Show is still segregated. Tracy is declared the winner of the Miss Teenage Hairspray competition and Corny declares his show to be racially integrated.
