She often comments on the in- tersemiotic diffi culties involved in this transformation by referring to the Byzantine iconoclas- tic controversy. Using Trotzig’s notion of the iconoclastic controversy as a starting point, the present article investigates her understanding of the picture-word-transformation problems. The line of argument comprises fi ve stages. In the fi rst stage, the main issue of the article is presented and specifi ed. In the second stage, it is argued that previous critical approaches to Trotzig’s Byzantinism in most cases have been based on misleadingly anachronistic and mainly Occidental categories. In the third stage, the Byzantine iconoclastic controversy is related to the distinctive character of the theological thought of the Eastern Church. In the fourth stage, the Byzantine iconophile and iconoclast theories are applied to Trotzig’s literary works. A close reading of a representative prose poem of hers, “Teologiska variationer” (“Theological vari- ations”), demonstrates that her works unequivocally support the icon theology of the icono- dules. In the closing fi fth stage, Trotzig’s notion of the Byzantine iconoclastic controversy is reconstructed on the basis of her essays and interviews in which she explains her own as well as other authors’ intersemiotic diffi culties.

  • Knut Hamsun at the Movies in Transnational Contexts
KNUT HAMSUN AT THE MOVIES IN TRANSNATIONAL CONTEXTS Arne Lunde This article is a historical overview that examines how the literary works of Knut Hamsun have been adapted into films over the past century. This “Cook’s Tour” of Hamsun at the movies will trace how different national and transnational cinemas have appropri- ated his novels at different historical moments. This is by no means a complete and exhaustive overview. The present study does not cite, for example, Hamsun films made for television or non-feature length Hamsun films. Thus I apologize in advance for any favorite Hamsun-related films that may have been overlooked. But ideally the article will address most of the high points in the international Hamsun filmography. On the subject of the cinema, Hamsun is famously quoted as having said in the 1920s: “I don’t understand film and I’m at home in bed with the flu” (Rottem 2). Yet while Hamsun was volun- tarily undergoing psychoanalysis in Oslo in 1926, he writes to his wife Marie about wishing to learn to dance and about going to the movies more (Næss 129). Biographer Robert Ferguson reports that in 1926, Hamsun began regularly visiting the cinemas in Oslo “taking great delight in the experience, particularly enjoying adventure films and comedies” (Ferguson 286). So we have the classic Hamsun paradox of conflicting statements on a subject, in this case the movies. Meanwhile, it is also important to remember that the films that Hamsun saw in 1926 would still have been silent movies with intertitles and musical accompaniment, and thus his poor hearing would not have been an impediment to his enjoyment.

EUROPEAN CULTURE FESTIVAL - A PART OF EUROPEAN SOCIAL FORUM 2008 EUROPEAN CULTURE FESTIVAL Sept. 12th – 21st 2008 A part of European Social Forum 2008 European Culture Festival (ECF) is a project that has functioned primarily as a tool within the framework of the European Social Forum (ESF) aiming to inspire, anchor and integrate different parts of the local cultural scene - to make possible a rich and diverse cultural programme to complement the forum. The project was initiated by Folkets Bio Malmö and immediately a creative collaboration was established with Folkets Hus och Parker to set an extensive film programme. All along more local culture actors has joined the project, which has grown into including all cultural fields, with focus remaining on the film programme. The result is both unique and outstanding, presenting the most extensive film programme in Malmö ever, and at the same time the biggest commitment to documentaries and film seminars ever. Add to that the forum seminar programme, with over 200 seminars, and we have for Malmö - a grand and very unique forum. ECF is founded on the cooperation between 200 organizations and actors from all over the world presenting events in 18 different locations in Malmö. The festival is based on extensive voluntary work. • Swedish Literature on the British Market 1998-2013: a Systemic
Swedish Literature on the British Market 1998-2013: A Systemic Approach Agnes Broomé A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy UCL Department of Scandinavian Studies School of European Languages, Culture and Society September 2014 2 I, Agnes Broomé, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. …............................................................................... 3 4 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the role and function of contemporary Swedish fiction in English translation on the British book market in the period 1998-2013. Drawing on Bourdieu’s Field Theory, Even Zohar’s Polysystem Theory and DeLanda’s Assemblage Theory, it constructs a model capable of dynamically describing the life cycle of border-crossing books, from selection and production to marketing, sales and reception. This life cycle is driven and shaped by individual position-takings of book market actants, and by their complex interaction and continual evolution. The thesis thus develops an understanding of the book market and its actants that deliberately resists static or linear perspectives, acknowledging the centrality of complex interaction and dynamic development to the analysis of publishing histories of translated books. The theoretical component is complemented by case studies offering empirical insight into the model’s application. Each case study illuminates the theory from a different angle, creating thereby a composite picture of the complex, essentially unmappable processes that underlie the logic of the book market. The first takes as its subject the British publishing history of crime writer Liza Marklund, as well as its wider context, the Scandinavian crime boom.

  • 09-29 Drömmen Om Jerusalem I Samarb.
