    Scandals in sport AN ACCOMPANIMENT TO ON THE TAKE TONY JOEL AND MATHEW TURNER Contemporary Histories Research Group, Deakin University February 2020 he events that enveloped the Victorian Football League (VFL) generally and the Carlton Football Club especially in September 1910 were not unprecedented. Gambling was entrenched in TMelbourne’s sporting landscape and rumours about footballers “playing dead” to fix the results of certain matches had swirled around the city’s ovals, pubs, and back streets for decades. On occasion, firmer allegations had even forced authorities into conducting formal inquiries. The Carlton bribery scandal, then, was not the first or only time when footballers were interrogated by officials from either their club or governing body over corruption charges. It was the most sensational case, however, and not only because of the guilty verdicts and harsh punishments handed down. As our new book On The Take reveals in intricate detail, it was a particularly controversial episode due to such a prominent figure as Carlton’s triple premiership hero Alex “Bongo” Lang being implicated as the scandal’s chief protagonist. Indeed, there is something captivating about scandals involving professional athletes and our fascination is only amplified when champions are embroiled, and long bans are sanctioned. As a by-product of modernity’s cult of celebrity, it is not uncommon for high-profile sportspeople to find themselves exposed by unlawful, immoral, or simply ill-advised behaviour whether it be directly related to their sporting performances or instead concerning their personal lives. Most cases can be categorised as somehow relating to either sex, illegal or criminal activity, violence, various forms of cheating (with drugs/doping so prevalent it can be considered a separate category), prohibited gambling and match-fixing.

Their role is vital to the ongoing success of our country communities and that role should never be underestimated. I would like to especially acknowledge the great role that women, and in particular women’s committees, have played. It has been enormous. I would also like to stress the strong leadership role that the West Australian Country Football League has played, and congratulate the WA Country Football League president, Ken Baxter, and the CEO, Cameron Knapton, who along with the 23-plus country football leagues, have enabled country football to meet its challenges and play its key role. I would like to recognise the great footballers from the Great Northern Football League, including Steve McCann, Kevin Worthington, Kevin Mazzuchelli, Chris Mainwaring, Murray Wrensted, Brad Tunbridge, Jim Sewell, Daniel Chick, Paul Hasleby, Andrew Lockyer, Patrick Ryder, Josh Kennedy and, of course, Kevin Clune, the “Carnamah Kid”. The Eagles continue to enjoy a healthy rivalry with the Berwick Football Club, culminating in the annual Battle of the Creek match. Great eras The Eagles won a hat-trick of flags in the SWGFL from 1980-82, and in 1993 transferred to the WGFL. The club enjoyed immediate success at reserve and junior level but had to wait until 1999 for its initial senior premiership in West Gippsland. This success was followed with another flag in 2001. The club also had five reserves successes, three under-17 and three under-15 premierships in this eight- year period. A major VCFL restructure saw Beaconsfield join the MPNFL in 2002, with premierships coming in 2003 and 2004.

Sean Edward Gorman. ii ABSTRACT This thesis analyses and investigates the issue of racism in the football code of Australian Rules to understand how racism is manifested in Australian daily life. In doing this, it considers biological determinism, Indigenous social obligation and kinship structure, social justice and equity, government policy, the media, local history, everyday life, football culture, history and communities and the emergence of Indigenous players in the modern game. These social issues are explored through the genre of biography and the story of the Noongar footballers, Jim and Phillip Krakouer, who played for Claremont and North Melbourne in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. This thesis, in looking at Jim and Phillip Krakouers careers, engages with other Indigenous footballer’s contributions prior to the AFL introducing Racial and Religious Vilification Laws in 1995.
