Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/ to discover more amazing information on the following companies and key figures in Improvisation Theater History. Viola Spolin was an American drama teacher and author. She is considered by many to be the American Grandmother of Improvisation. Author of “Improvisation for the theater” still respected as one of the best books on the subject. Paul Sills was a director and improvisation teacher, and the original director of The Second City, Playwrights and Compass Players. Paul was the son of teacher and writer Viola Spolin. Mike Nichols (born 6 November 1931) is one of America’s most imprortant television, stage and film director, writer, and producers. Nichols is one of the few people to have won all the major American entertainment awards: an Oscar, Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award. Started as an Improv Actor/Comedian. An actor, improviser, writer, and teacher, Close had a prolific career, appearing in a number of films and television shows. He was a co-author of the book Truth in Comedy along with partner Charna Halpern, which outlines techniques now common to longform improvisational theater and describes the overall structure of “Harold” which remains a common frame for longer improvisational scenes. The Compass Players (or Compass Theater) was a 1950s cabaret revue show started by alumni from the University of Chicago.[1].

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: JAMIE WRIGHT [email protected] 415-377-9659 TIM MEADOWS & IMPROV GREATS SHINE IN SF IMPROV FESTIVAL LINEUP The 8-year-old festival gets the word out on the not-so-secret weapon of comedy. (San Francisco, CA July 19th, 2011) – The San Francisco Improv Festival, running August 18th - 27th at The Eureka Theater, is on a mission to get the word out about improv. Tim Meadows (performing with Uncle’s Brother), Improv Everywhere, and Dr. God are just a few of the acts in this year’s impressive lineup helping with that mission. “Really, improv is everywhere,” says festival Executive Producer Jamie Wright. “From SNL-ers Seth Meyers and Jason Sudeikis to Ms. Bossypants herself, Tina Fey, to the casts of The Colbert Report, 30 Rock, and The Office, improvisors make up a huge part of the smartest and funniest comedy performers at work today.” That’s what the San Francisco Improv Festival is here to celebrate, and as part of that they are hosting the heavy-hitting talents who taught many of today’s comedy greats how to be funny. Charna Halpern, co-founder of iO Theater in Chicago taught or helped train such performers as Stephen Colbert, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, and Tim Meadows. Ms. Halpern will give a workshop on improv fundamentals, and will also be featured in a talk about San Francisco’s role in the life of Del Close, improv guru who trained the likes of John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Robin Williams, Bill Murray, Amy Sedaris, Harold Ramis and Gilda Radner.

  • A Bad Moms Christmas Is Here to Bring That Same Real Mom Spirit to the Holidays
1 WTAF JUST HAPPENED? Something happened after the release of Bad Moms in the Summer of 2016. A Bad Moms movement was unleashed. Something we couldn’t quite put our chipped finger nails on. The filmmakers felt confident that they had made a hilarious film, but were bowled over to see it go on to gross north of $180 million dollars worldwide. Gangs of moms of all generations hit the theatres to see Bad Moms and enjoy a night out on the town with their besties; free from responsibility and ready to party. Whether your bottle of choice for these outings contained wine or nail polish, it was clear that there was safety in numbers. Moms needed other moms to get them through the day. The monotony of responsibilities of helming the home was tiresome and mamas everywhere needed to take a break and check out now and then. A camaraderie was forming among moms of all ages no matter what their situation, with Bad Moms as the catalyst for change. The film reverberated with moms around the globe and became a part of the zeitgeist, and a group of women banded together and a Bad Moms movement was unleashed. What Bad Moms leading ladies Amy (Mila Kunis), Kiki (Kristen Bell), and Carla (Kathryn Hahn) represented was freedom. Freedom to fuck up. Freedom to do the best you can and still fuck up. It was a relief to see the honesty of being a mom portrayed on the big screen with Bad Moms, and now A Bad Moms Christmas is here to bring that same real mom spirit to the holidays.
