Memetic Proliferation and Fan Participation in the Simpsons
THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL Craptacular Science and the Worst Audience Ever: Memetic Proliferation and Fan Participation in The Simpsons being a Thesis submitted for the Degree of PhD Film Studies in the University of Hull by Jemma Diane Gilboy, BFA, BA (Hons) (University of Regina), MScRes (University of Edinburgh) April 2016 Craptacular Science and the Worst Audience Ever: Memetic Proliferation and Fan Participation in The Simpsons by Jemma D. Gilboy University of Hull 201108684 Abstract (Thesis Summary) The objective of this thesis is to establish meme theory as an analytical paradigm within the fields of screen and fan studies. Meme theory is an emerging framework founded upon the broad concept of a “meme”, a unit of culture that, if successful, proliferates among a given group of people. Created as a cultural analogue to genetics, memetics has developed into a cultural theory and, as the concept of memes is increasingly applied to online behaviours and activities, its relevance to the area of media studies materialises. The landscapes of media production and spectatorship are in constant fluctuation in response to rapid technological progress. The internet provides global citizens with unprecedented access to media texts (and their producers), information, and other individuals and collectives who share similar knowledge and interests. The unprecedented speed with (and extent to) which information and media content spread among individuals and communities warrants the consideration of a modern analytical paradigm that can accommodate and keep up with developments. Meme theory fills this gap as it is compatible with existing frameworks and offers researchers a new perspective on the factors driving the popularity and spread (or lack of popular engagement with) a given media text and its audience. -

Cupid’s Advice: When your relationship is just blossoming, it can be difficult to figure out your own feelings about that person if your relationship is highly publicized. With everyone giving you their input, and pestering you about the latest details of your love life, you may get caught up in the attention and neglect the fact that it may not even be working. By initially keeping your new relationship on the down-low, you’ll be able to discover your feelings for your new beau, and find out whether or not you could really gal for this person: 1. Hold off on updating your social media status: Until you get out of the murky waters of “What direction is this going in?” you don’t need to make your relationship Facebook Official. These days defining your relationship is harder than it looks, so at first your don’t want to jump to conclusions about your relationship status with your man. Just keep cool, calm and collective, and once you both have your feet on the ground you can upload those adorable selfies you have on your camera roll. -

Presidential Libraries
Presidential Libraries presented by Jeri Diehl Cusack Our National Archives For the first 150 or so years, each U. S. government agency kept its own records – sometimes without much special care or organization – until the establishment of the National Archives. The National Archives & the position of National Archivist were created by Congressional statute in 1934… during FDR’s first term in office. National Archives & Records Administration (or “NARA”) Best known for housing the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution & the Bill of Rights in its building on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the National Archives is now “our nation’s official record keeper.” NARA includes a nationwide network of regional archives & records facilities. NARA has an Office of Presidential Libraries: http://www.archives.gov/presidential-libraries/ NARA Presidential Library Holdings 400 million pages 10 million photos 15 million feet of motion picture film 100,000 hours of audio/video tapes/discs 500,000+ museum objects History of Presidential Libraries In December of 1938, during his second term of office, FDR announced a plan to build a library to preserve his public papers. Some previous presidents had not taken such action; their papers had been lost, sold, scattered, damaged or even destroyed. FDR raised funds from private donors to fund building his project near his home in Hyde Park NY; later he donated the library to the U.S. Government via the National Archives. FDR’s Sketch of Proposed Library, drawn April 12, 1937 http://www.fdrlibrary.marist.edu/library/archchron.html Dedication Ceremony 6.30.1941 http://www.fdrlibrary.marist.edu/library/onedefinitelocality.html FDR, the great collector Originally, the museum was essentially a showcase for FDR’s various collections: a gallery devoted to his model ships and a room full of “oddities,” gifts given to the Roosevelts during FDR’s years in office. -
PC Is Back in South Park: Framing Social Issues Through Satire
Colloquy Vol. 12, Fall 2016, pp. 101-114 PC Is Back in South Park: Framing Social Issues through Satire Alex Dejean Abstract This study takes an extensive look at the television program South Park episode “Stunning and Brave.” There is limited research that explores the use of satire to create social discourse on concepts related to political correctness. I use framing theory as a primary variable to understand the messages “Stunning and Brave” attempts to convey. Framing theory originated from the theory of agenda setting. Agenda setting explains how media depictions affect how people think about the world. Framing is an aspect of agenda setting that details the organization and structure of a narrative or story. Framing is such an important variable to agenda setting that research on framing has become its own field of study. Existing literature of framing theory, comedy, and television has shown how audiences perceive issues once they have been exposed to media messages. The purpose of this research will review relevant literature explored in this area to examine satirical criticism on the social issue of political correctness. It seems almost unnecessary to point out the effect media has on us every day. Media is a broad term for the collective entities and structures through which messages are created and transmitted to an audience. As noted by Semmel (1983), “Almost everyone agrees that the mass media shape the world around us” (p. 718). The media tells us what life is or what we need for a better life. We have been bombarded with messages about what is better. -

Pets Are Popular with U.S. Presidents
Pets Are Popular With U.S. Presidents Most people have heard by now that President-elect Barack Obama promised his two daughters a puppy if he were elected president. Obama called choosing a dog a “major issue” for the new first family. It seems that pets have always been very popular with U.S. presidents. Only two of the 44 presidents -- Chester A. Arthur and Franklin Pierce -- left no record of having pets. Many presidents and their children had dogs and cats in the White House. President and Mrs. Bush have two dogs and a cat living with them -- the dogs are named Barney and Miss Beazley and the cat is India. But there have been many unusual presidential pets as well. President Calvin Coolidge may have had the most pets. NEWS WORD BOX He had a pygmy hippopotamus, six dogs, a bobcat, a goose, a donkey, a cat, two lion cubs, an antelope, and popular issue record wallaby a wallaby. President Herbert Hoover had several dogs pygmy hippopotamus and his son had two pet alligators, which sometimes took walks outside the White House. Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, had a pony named Macaroni. She would ride Macaroni around the White House grounds. Some pets also worked while at the White House. Pauline the cow was the last cow to live at the White House. She provided milk for President William Taft. To save money during World War I, President Woodrow Wilson brought in a flock of sheep to trim the White House lawn. The flock included a ram named Old Ike.
