2 - The CORNSTALK Gazette SEPTEMBER 2013 President's Report It’s election time and I don’t just mean for the Folk Federation of NSW. Thankfully there are no coups or blood letting this year unlike our struggling counterparts in federal politics. I look forward to seeing the results of both elections, though I have to say, I feel a whole lot more confident in what we will get with the Folk Fed than I do with the other “Fed”. This will be my last President report and though I am happy to be stepping aside and tak- ing on a new role with St Albans Folk Festival, at the same time I want to thank, whole heartedly, the committee, Coral, Julie, Wayne and the membership in general for making the last four years or so some of the most rewarding time of my life. People have been more than generous and I feel privileged to have been able to give my all to the role. I hope to stay involved and continue on the committee in a lesser role. I often peruse the last couple of reports when compiling the new report for the AGM. Normally I wouldn’t cut and paste whole slabs from one to the other but this time I am happy too as the people involved are still doing the wonderful job on their volunteer basis and I think what I have said previ- ously captures the amazing effort they put in to keep the Folk Fed running. ‘We are all volunteers who give what we can, when we can, but perhaps the ones that give the most on an ongoing basis are the people who keep us all up to date via Cornstalk and Folkmail and look after membership and the Jam website. Wayne your work with the website and membership is more than generous and we quite simply would struggle to function as an organization without your continued support. Julie spends an average of at least one full day a week keeping us all up to date via Folkmail and we all appreciate you good nature, humour and eye for detail that makes Folkmail such a wonderful resource. The third spoke in this particular wheel is the Cornstalk Gazette, Coral spends many hours compiling and editing to get the “papers out on time” every month, as do Dallas and Jim with the wrapping and mailing and we thank you - very much. I guess we can all take some things for granted, particularly when they continue to run smoothly and are always there, it is often only when things change and all of a sudden they are not there or not there in the same way that we remember and realise their inherent value. I wish to say thankyou now and acknowledge the wonderful job you all do while things are still running smoothly.” On a similar note, a big thank you to the Committee for all you has given over the past year/s. To Bruce, Dallas, Jim, Margaret, Pam, Patrick, Sandra and Terry, your good company and many skills have made for another enjoyable and productive year. We have still been able to support various projects by auspicing on behalf of our members and now that we have tax deductible status, hope to be able to do more for our members. I had hoped that we would have a new website up and running by now but am happy to say we are still pursuing such and I’m sure the new committee will be able to deliver something wonderful in the coming year. The Mofo – Modern Folkie team have gone from strength to strength over the last twelve months. Congratulations to Alice, Bec, Charlotte, Delphina, Joel, Mikaela, Peter and all the rest of the helpers. We had our first fundraising event and recreated the speakeasy feel of the 1920’s and 30’s. The music was great, the Gaelic Club looked amazing and everyone did their part in getting “frocked up” in style for the night. I believe they kicked on into the wee hours and we managed to raise over $600.00, which goes towards running future events and supporting our amazing young talent. We will be having another themed night with the Bearded Gypsy Band and The Tiger And Me, in December, so be sure to join us as we celebrate another excellent year in Mofo style. A big thankyou to the performers who have been a part of Mofo, we love being able to provide a space to celebrate your talents and look forward to the next years events. Also huge thanks to Aisling, Dylan, Alex and all at the Gaelic Club. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful venue and people supporting us in running our monthly gigs . It was a pleasure to present Dave DeSanti with life time achievement award and Mark Gregory and Brian Dunnett their Highly Commended Award as contributors to the Trains of Treasure project, at this years National. All have given greatly to the folk world and was a wonderful to see a good turnout for the presentation and the generous applause for the recipients. Thanks also to Pam Merrigan and the National Folk Festival for providing the venue and note in the programme. Well I suppose that’s all for now, at least in my current role, again it has been a privilege and a pleasure and I would never have guessed when Christina Mimmocchi approached me a number of years ago to ask if I might be interested in putting up my hand for the position of President, that the 30 second conversation would have led to such a wonderful couple of years, spent in the company of people who have become in many ways my second family. Thankyou and here’s to the next 12 months and beyond, whatever they may bring. Cheers and kind regards, Anthony Woolcott President, Folk Federation of NSW

From The Editor We were all saddened this month by the sudden death of John Dengate, musician, poet, raconteur, humourist. A master of parody and an all round good bloke. Our sincere condolences to Dale and family. He will be missed. But his songs will be sung for many generations to come. (See page 10 for a special tribute.)

Sydney Playford Sydney Playford Dance Group is reborn this month, under the leadership of Julie and Alex Bishop. There has been something of a hiatus, because of Patricia Early's prolonged ill health and then her death. But there are hopes now of a revitalised group. As noted in February Cornstalk, Sydney Playford was started in 1976 by a few enthusiasts, with Lynette Hicks and Noreen Grunseit as the teachers, who had learnt the dances in London at Cecil Sharp House (www.efdss.org) in the late 1950s, from people who had learnt from Cecil Sharp himself. It attracted a vibrant group of people eager to learn and perform these lovely old dances. These are the dances first published by John Playford in 1651, in "The English Dancing Master".They include dances such as Grimstock and Newcastle, which were on the programme of the 33rd BMC Subscription Ball this year. But later dances will also be taught, including those in the Apted collection (late 18th century); and the dances that were done in the BBC's TV series of "Pride and Prejudice". (Grimstock appeared in episode 3, at Mrs Phillips' house.) And, eventually, maybe later dances still, like those written by Pat Shaw. (His Levi Jackson Rag is popular at bush dances, but he wrote many dances in the English style.) Each of these old English dances has its own distinctive tune. Many of you know the Bishops better as contra dance people: but they met at Sydney Playford in 1978. Daughter Laura was dubbed 'Laura "Playford" Bishop' by Lynette, as the first child born to dancers who met at the group. Now better known as a member of popular band Chaika, Laura is keen to play for Playford when she can! There will be live music as often as possi- ble. (In the '70s, live music was provided by Roz Uren (now Kerr, and a member of Newcastle band Fiddle Tunes) with Chris Kempster and Ken Greenhalgh.) The dance workshop will be on the first Tuesday of each month (except January) – starting on Tuesday, 3rd September, at the Bush Music Club hut (Hut 44), Addison Road Community Centre, 142 Addison Road, Marrickville, 7.30-9.30pm. All being well, there will be 11 workshops a year - unless disrupted by the National Folk Festival, for example, if it clashes with the first Tuesday. And there is a Facebook page, the first place to look for any news: www.facebook.com/sydneyplayford. You can also contact Julie or Alex, 9524 0247.

The Folk Federation of NSW ONLINE - jam.org.au The CORNSTALK Gazette SEPTEMBER 2013 9 JOHN DENGATE (1-10-38 - 1-8-2013

Saying Goodbye I sing my songs and I say goodbye and I leave on the morning train And I thirst for a private apocalypse as the paddocks thirst for rain. I think of the stilted, sad good-byes and the handshakes through the years, And it sometimes seems I have spent my life in a battle to hold back tears. I struggle against the words ‘good-bye’; I struggle against the pain: I write in fear, for the day is near for saying ‘good-bye’ again. John Dengate (reprinted with kind permission from Dale Dengate)

John Dengate was the closest heir to the legacy of Henry Lawson that this country has known. He was a free thinker, poet, artist, teacher, songwriter, singer and street busker, ever ready to recite or sing, and always ready to take the mickey out of poli- ticians, misguided business leaders and any visiting sports team. Recently, he had become a familiar city sight, playing his tin whistle and singing at the corner of George and Market streets or at Central Station. Although he played guitar, his whistle playing worked better in Sydney's noisy streets. His beautiful old Irish and bush tunes wafted over Henry Lawson's ''faces in the street''. He never left home without a pen and paper. Like Lawson, Dengate enjoyed a drink or three but a few years ago, when he was ordered off the grog, he quit immediately. However, surgery for cancer, a weakened heart and the humiliation of the Aussie cricket team's defeat by the Poms has dealt him a final wicket. If nothing else, Dengate was pragmatic about his growing catalogue of ailments and used his wry humour to cope. After being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation he wrote a song ending with: ''I suppose that there's worse things in life than giving up the booze, and I know it sounds vindictive … but I hope the All Blacks lose!'' John Robert Dengate was born on October 1, 1938, and grew up in Carlingford. Three of his best-known songs reflect on his early life: When I Was A Lad in Carlingford, Bare-Legged Kate, about his mother, and The Song of the Sheet-Metal Worker dedicated to his father, Norman. At 15, infatuated with the boxer Jimmy Carruthers, Dengate became obsessed with the fight game and the old Sydney Stadium boxers. He loved all sports although he claimed to be a rotten sport. His song Sporting Suicide ends with ''Jump off the Gap or turn on the gas tap, if we're beaten by the Poms.'' Dengate was lean, like a greyhound at Harold Park, and he had the stamina of one, too. He ran marathons and estimated he had raced around the Centennial Park circuit more than 12,000 times, but his real marathon was in continuing the spirit of Henry Lawson for well over 50 years. As a young man, Dengate, a talented sketcher, was torn between art and music, not real options for a working-class boy, so, being a realist, he became a teacher. His first post- ing in the 1950s was the outback town of Menindee, where he met folk singer Brian Mooney, who ''taught me every- thing I needed to know about the power of folk song".

10 - The CORNSTALK Gazette SEPTEMBER 2013 In 1961, Dengate went to Burnside Central School, where he met and soon married Roseann Dale, who introduced him to the Bush Music Club. There, he met traditional singers who impressed him with their well-articulated singing, so important to story songs. He also met pioneer folk song collec- tors John Meredith and Alan Scott, who furthered his interest in Australian tradi- tional song and story. There is no doubt that Dengate's songs will live on. Many have already passed into that hazy territory where the song is known and the songwriter anonymous. He would agree to such musical freedom, especially as most of his songs were set to traditional tunes. Witty satirical verse was his stock in trade and he was brilliant in pressing the point while pressing the funny bone. Dengate was a republican and loved Australia and its stories but he was never an angry man and preferred to make his point with humour. His last songs included Please Save Me from the Mad Monk and an attack on Rupert Mur- doch's phone-tapping spree. He never left home without a pen and paper, scorning computers with their spellchecks and rhyme lists. He wrote thousands of songs, satires and poems and also had a repertoire of hundreds of traditional songs and knew the great Australian poems. His life has been documented in oral history interviews at the Australian National Library, and in three songbooks and various recordings. John Dengate is survived by Roseann, sons Lachlan and Sean, daughter-in-law Mandy, grandchildren Roisin and Cal, mother Kathleen &, of course, his songs. Warren Fahey
