Three Masters, One Passion Three masters, one passion Three great figures of international cinema to give masterclasses within the 15th edition of the Marrakech International Film festival. Abbas Kiarostami is one of the undisputed masters of iranian cinema and a worldly rekonwn author. He was rewarded in the biggest festivals : Golden Palm at Cannes Festival for Taste of Cherry ; Special Jury Prize in Venice for Le vent nous emportera... A great friend of Marrakech, he was honored by the festival in 2005, animating the same time a workshop for young moroccan filmmakers. In 2009 , he chaired the jury of the ninth edition . Today, he returnes to Marrakech to talk about his conception of cinema declined through a universal work that mixes subtle poetry, strength and fragility . Park Chan-wook , a South Korean director and writer, will be in Marrakech for a tribute but also to intervene in a masterclass . He is the author of a strong work rewarded worldwide , as it was the case in Cannes where it won the Grand Prix in 2004 and the Jury Prize in 2009. His work tells with elegance and emotion the cruelty and the complexity of human relationships. His movie Stoker (2013) , his first film in Hollywood, is a illustration through which he revisited Hitchcock in his way. Another masterclass will be given by Fatih Akin, the German director of Turkish origin and a genuine star of german cinema. Born and raised in the working class suburb of Hamburg, Akin first dreamed of being an actor in a Bruce Lee style before moving behind the camera making films that attracted attention quickly. He won the Golden Bear in Berlin in 2004 for Head-on . Far from being locked in a sclerotic identity approach, he relates the multicultural reality of modern society with an enthusiasm that recalls Martin Scorsese films that he admires. In 2014, he tackles in The Cut a taboo subject in the country of his parents: the Armenian genocide. Akin loves cinema in all its geographical and aesthetic diversity. Fatih AKIN Director, screenwriter & producer Germany & Turkey © Vanessa Maas_Photoselection Fatih Akin won the Golden Bear in Berlin in 2004 for Head-On, announcing him as a major on the international film stage. His Fordian directing style, which captures the ambition of his screenplays, saw him win again at the Festival de Cannes in 2007, where he scooped the Jury Prize for The Edge of Heaven, and again at the Venice Film Festival in 2009, for Soul Kitchen. In 2014, he directed The Cut, the final part of his trilogy on love (Head-on), death (The Edge of Heaven), and lastly evil. Through a poetic style that subtly blends power and fragility, his films build into a universal oeuvre on a very human scale. Internationally acknowledged as one of the great auteurs of the filmmaking art, he won the Palme d’Or in Cannes for Taste of Cherry in 1997. Then in 1999, his next film, The Wind Will Carry Us, was honored at the Venice Film Festival, winning the Grand Special Jury Prize. Journal of Xi'an University of Architecture & Technology ISSN No : 1006-7930 A Polyphonic Reading of Asghar Farhadi's A Separation : Bakhtinian Study Abdol Hossein Joodaki 1, Maryam Eskandarzadeh 2 1. Associate Professor , Department of English Language and Literature, Lorestan University, Khorramabad, Iran [email protected] / [email protected] 2.M.A. Student, Department of English Language and Literature, Lorestan University, Khorramabad, Iran [email protected] Abstract A Separation film, written and directed by Asghar Farhadi, is a modern and provoking film worth consideration. Asghar Farhadi has always tried to depict conflict ideas and discourses throughout the society, and that's the reason why his movies always penetrate through different social classes and become epidemic; his recent film: A Separation is not an exception. In this article we have carefully examined the term “polyphony” and its application in a descriptive-analytical manner throughout the film, while explaining this term according to Bakhtin. We have tried first to answer the question “what are the components or factors of a polyphonic work and how is it embodied or manifested in the film”. Accordingly, in this article, the emphasis is on the components of polyphony, including the structure of conflict components, polyphony among social strata, change in viewpoint, heteroglossia, Intertextuality, etc. These factors are then examined and analyzed in the film. The result of this article is that the polyphonic film, with the tools it provides to the audience, leads them to a new perception of the text. Keywords : Mikhail Bakhtin, Polyphony, A separation, social classes, heteroglossia, intertextuality Volume XIII, Issue 4, 2021 Page No: 100 Journal of Xi'an University of Architecture & Technology ISSN No : 1006-7930 Introduction In the present article, we will first explain the term Polyphony.

THE KARLOVY VARY FESTIVAL TO HONOR ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR BARRY LEVINSON At this year’s Karlovy Vary festival, screenwriter-producer-director Barry Levinson, who won an Academy Award for Rain Man, will accept the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema. The Karlovy Vary festival continues its tradition of recognizing the most important personalities of world cinema, the likes of which include directors William Friedkin, Jerry Schatzberg, and Ken Loach, and screenwriter Paul Laverty. In his writing and directing capacity, Academy Award winner and five-time nominee Barry Levinson deftly combines personal stories with an often satirical look at society, and his movies have fundamentally influenced numerous young filmmakers. Barry Levinson established himself as a writer of successful television shows. With his onetime wife, Valerie Curtin, he then wrote the movie script for Norman Jewison’s courtroom drama …and justice for all (1979), which brought them an Oscar nomination. He debuted as a director with the comedy-drama Diner (1982), receiving his second Oscar nomination for the script. Ivan Král, a Czech musician based in the US, co- wrote the film music. Subsequent titles confirmed his reputation with critics and audiences: The Natural (1984) with Robert Redford, Tin Men (1987) with Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito, and Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) with Robin Williams. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the legendary picture Rain Man (1988), awarded four Oscars (e.g. Best Director for Barry Levinson) and numerous other honors, including the Golden Bear at the Berlinale and the David di Donatello for Best Foreign Film.

  • IL MOSTRO DI ST. PAULI Di Fatih Akin
! IL MOSTRO DI ST. PAULI di Fatih Akin con Jonas Dassler Margarethe Tiesel Hark ARK Bohm Basato sul romanzo “Der goldene Handschuh” di Heinz Strunk uscita: 29 agosto 2019 durata: 115 minuti ! Ufficio stampa Federica Scarnati [email protected] Tel.

  • Silence Studies in the Cinema and the Case of Abbas Kiarostami
SILENCE STUDIES IN THE CINEMA AND THE CASE OF ABBAS KIAROSTAMI by Babak Tabarraee M.A., Tehran University of Art, 2007 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Film Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) January 2013 © Babak Tabarraee, 2013 Abstract This thesis is an attempt to formulate a systematic framework for ‘silence studies’ in the cinema by defining silence in pragmatic terms and suggesting different forms of filmic silence. As an illustration of my model, I examine the variety of silences in the works of Abbas Kiarostami, a notable figure of Art Cinema. The analytical approach suggested here can further be applied to the works of many other Art Cinema auteurs, and, by extension, to other cinematic modes as well, for a better understanding of the functions, implications, and consequences of various forms of silence in the cinema. Chapter 1 provides a working and pragmatic description of silence, applicable to both film and other communicative forms of art. Chapter 2 represents a historical study of some of the major writings about silence in the cinema. Chapter 3 introduces, exemplifies, and analyzes the acoustic silences in the films of Kiarostami, including the five categories of complete , partial (uncovered; covered with noise, music, or perspective), character/dialogue , language , and music silences. Chapter 4 introduces the concept of meta-silence and its trans-sensorial perceptions in communication and in arts, and then defines the four categories of the visual , character/image , narrative , and political silences in Kiarostami’s oeuvre.

1–25 NOVEMBER LONSM_350_ .pdf 1 2018. 8. 22. 8:48 It is my pleasure to introduce to you the 13th instalment of the London Korean Film Festival, our annual celebration of Korean Film in all its forms. Since 2006, the Korean Cultural Centre UK has presented the festival with two simple goals, namely to be the most inclusive festival of national cinema anywhere and to always improve on where we left off. As part of this goal Daily to Seoul and Beyond for greater inclusivity, in 2016 the main direction of the festival was tweaked to allow a broader, more diverse range of Korean films to be shown. With special themes exploring different subjects, the popular strands covering everything from box office hits to Korean classics, as well as monthly teaser screenings, the festival has continued to find new audiences for Korean cinema. This year the festival once again works with critics, academics and visiting programmers on each strand of the festival and has partnered with several university film departments as well. At the time of writing, this year’s festival will screen upwards of 55 films, with a special focus entitled ‘A Slice of Everyday Life’. This will include the opening and closing films, Microhabitat by Jeon Go-woon, and The Return by Malene Choi. C ‘A Slice of Everyday Life’ explores valuable snapshots of the sometimes-ignored M lives of ordinary Koreans, often fragile individuals on the edge of society. One Y will also see director Lee Myung-se's films in the Contemporary Classics strand and Park Kiyong's films in the Indie Firepower strand.

  • Fatih Akins Cinema and Cityscape: a Comparison Between Hamburg
The Journal of International Scientific Researches Uluslararası Bilimsel Ara ştırmalar Dergisi 2016,1(32016,1(3)))) Fatih Akin`s Cinema and Cityscape: A Comparison Between Hamburg and Istanbul Through His Films 1 Fatih Akın Sineması ve Kent-Mekanı: Akın’ın Filmleri Üzerinden Hamburg ve İstanbul Kar şıla ştırması Sertaç Timur Demir 2 ABSTRACT Fatih Akin and his films may be interesting for sociologists and political scientists, but not for philosophers and psychologists, because he is interested in social reality and norms rather than individual differences. Moreover, his films may be of interest to those who focus on architecture and spatiality. For this reason, in this paper, I compare between urban experiences of Hamburg and Istanbul by using his three important films: Head on (2004), Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul (2005), and Soul Kitchen (2009). These films are not only films of Fatih Akin, but also of Hamburg and Istanbul themselves. Keywords: Fatih Akin, Hamburg, Istanbul, Urban experience, Social life.

She knows nothing about him, he thinks he knows her. He welcomes her into his home, she offers him her body. But the web that is woven between them in the space of twenty-four hours bears no relation to the circumstances of their encounter. 4 5 new awakening Without doubt, there was an underlying sense of gnawing depravity that surfaced in Certified Copy and took me by surprise. I was sure that I already had a good understanding of the work of this film-maker that I have been lucky enough to come across so often in the past 25 years. So I was not expecting his latest film to outstrip the already high opinion I have of his work. Some people like to feel that they can describe and pigeonhole his films as ‘pseudo-simplistic modernism’. But Abbas’ films have never failed to surprise and now here, not for the first time, is a new wake-up call, for me, and I am sure many others.
