  • Trends of Venture Capital Internationalisation the Impact of a Technology Ecosystem on Early Stage Cross- Border Investments
Trends of Venture Capital Internationalisation The impact of a technology ecosystem on early stage cross- border investments . AUTHOR Anna Ahlm TUTOR Conny Overland Spring term 2014 FEA50E Degree Project in Business Administration for Master of Science in Business and Economics, 30 credits Abstract The venture capital industry has grown rapidly in the last decades to become an important source of financing for entrepreneurs. While research suggests that venture capital investments are more likely to be successful if done in close geographic proximity to the venture capital firm, there is clearly a trend of increasing international investments. This thesis looks at the venture capital community in New York to understand venture capital as a part of the development of New York’s technology cluster, and to understand venture capitalists view on cross-border investments. By applying the ecosystem resource perspective model, the study finds that venture capitalists have a strong influence on the technology ecosystem in New York, due to its large financial sector. The study also finds that ecosystem sub-sectors have developed by applying technology to the dominating business sectors in New York. The study also identifies a “reverse internationalisation”, whereby companies founded abroad relocate to New York at earlier stages in their development, as the growth of the New York ecosystem has increased its attractiveness to foreign founded companies. While the empirical results confirm an increasing interest for cross-border investing, the increased supply of early stage investment opportunities (U.S. and foreign founded) creates a strong incentive for a local investment strategy. Further, the study finds that venture capitalists mitigate the risks associated with cross-border investments by establishing funds in specific regions of interest, and by co- investing with local partners.

Patricof Interview Conducted by Carole Kolker, PhD September 24 and October 26, 2010 ___________________________________________________________________________ This collection of interviews, Venture Capital Greats, recognizes the contributions of individuals who have followed in the footsteps of early venture capital pioneers such as Andrew Mellon and Laurance Rockefeller, J. H. Whitney and Georges Doriot, and the mid-century associations of Draper, Gaither & Anderson and Davis & Rock — families and firms who financed advanced technologies and built iconic U.S. companies. Each interviewee was asked to reflect on his formative years, his career path, and the subsequent challenges faced as a venture capitalist. Their stories reveal passion and judgment, risk and rewards, and suggest in a variety of ways what the small venture capital industry has contributed to the American economy. As the venture capital industry prepares for a new market reality in the early years of the 21st century, the National Venture Capital Association reports (2008) that venture capital investments represented 21 percent of U.S. GDP and was responsible for 12.1 million American jobs and $2.9 trillion in sales.

  • NY VC Almanac Final
Orrick is proud to be a part of the New York venture community. And we’re equally proud to co-sponsor CB Insight’s New York Venture Capital Almanac. That’s because we think the NY VC Almanac is, and will be, a useful snapshot of where the New York venture community is right now, as well as a brief summary of where we’ve been. People will surely use the NY VC Almanac in a number of ways. But on a meta level, we think it makes a couple of points worth noting. First, the New York venture community is growing. And, though the NY VC Almanac doesn’t (and shouldn’t) include comparative data to other U.S. venture markets, if it did, it would show that the New York venture market is growing faster than the venture capital markets in other U.S. geographies. Second, and we believe more importantly, the NY VC Almanac shows that the New York venture community is a substantial market in and of itself, with numbers showing real deal volumes, and names showing real tech luminaries, both on the company and investor side. Companies and investors that have made names for themselves not just in New York, but throughout the national and global venture community. This is as it should be. Web and mobile businesses touch broad geographies, but there must be a reason why so many of them are now being formed and funded from New York. As the NY VC Almanac shows, the New York venture community has substantial, and growing, reach in the larger venture community.
