B NEW WORLD WE’RE GONNA MAKE IT POLYDOR 14154 M- 310 Actually this group are the World Column, but with a different lead vocalist – one who sounds just like Curtis Mayfield (who wrote the song) on this superb Chicago 1972 outing. C RUBIN YOU’VE BEEN AWAY KAPP 869 WD VG++ 200 Okay, so Northern Soul copied itself from Motown by and large but which Motown record (or Stax, or Okeh) ever sounded like this one? Careering stomper at its best. Almost a mint minus, just two small marks. D THE SOUL SHAKERS YOU’RE TURNIN’ TERI DE 003 M- 700 Yet another gem from the pen of Leonard Jewel Smith and as with everything on the original pink Teri De a highly collectable item. E JERI SHAW A LITTLE LESS TALK MASTERSOUND VG++ 150 001 Stomping Mile Grayson production from 1966 of the old standard song. Out of L.A. this is probably a very scarce record. F BIG FRANK & THE I WON’T LET HER SEE ME BLUE ROCK M- 250 ESSENCES CRY 4012 A bit of writing on the label but good vinyl (styrene actually) and far rarer than the Philips release (Blue Rock was first). A Stafford biggie just waiting to go again. G MARIE KNIGHT THAT’S NO WAY TO TREAT MUSICOR 1106 VG++ 200 A GIRL WD One of the great lines in Northern Soul – ‘The taste of madness that your lips placed on mine’. Pretty strong VG++....Just a one second cue burn. H TONY GALLA IN LOVE SWAN 4275 WD M- 365 Great condition on this rather superior blue-eyed stomper. Wigan missed this one, it would have loosened a few slates off the roof I would think. I JEANIE & THE LET ME DOWN EASY LIMELIGHT 3011 VG++ 400 GENTLEMEN Possibly one of the rarest major label items sees the Mercury jazz subsidiary put out the Condors ‘Let Me Down Easy’ under another name. In fact the Condors hardly came out in truth, it’s a some kind of test press/promo. The Jeanie cut is slightly different with a stronger mix/sound quality. J ROY HAMILTON YOU SHOOK ME UP RCA 9171 VG++ 200 The usual RCA story, black issue is the really rare one. I remember this one turning up in the eighties and thinking that not all the best Northern records had been found in the previous decade. A corker. K THE FOUR I’M NOT STRONG PARTY TIME 1001 VG++ 550 PERFECTIONS ENOUGH D Always was a rare record....but on a promo? Seriously hard. Needs no further introduction me- thinks. L THELMA WILSON DO YOU UNDERSTAND LOU-NEITA 0206 VG++ 200 Obscure, chugging dancer from Georgia hits a similar groove to Betty Fikes’ Southbound 45. M TOMMY NAVARRO I CRIED MY LIFE AWAY DE JAC 1253 M- 350 A great example of Uptown Soul with a touch of the Latin about it....the kind of thing the Drifters were up to at the time. Still a dancefloor packer. N HANK JACOBS ELIJAH ROCKIN’ WITH CALL ME 5385 WD M- 200 SOUL One of the big revived instrumentals of recent years but actually much rarer on a white promo like this one. O THE SEVEN SOULS I STILL LOVE YOU OKEH 7289 M- 350 Probably a little bit rarer on the issue but not a lot in it to be honest and a guaranteed floorfiller for any deejay. P JOHNNIE HOYLE WHAT ABOUT ME RAY-BO 105 VG++ 176 Yet another item that proves that Nashville had considerable soul back in the day. A rare record, but a few surface scratches, check the soundbite. Q LITTLE JOE ROMAN WHEN YOU’RE TUFF 419 WD VG++ 700 LONESOME Never anything other than an expensive record but actually much rarer than is often thought. A good condition copy (just one light mark) is even harder to come by. R THE ICEMEN ITS TIME YOU KNEW OLE-9 1008 M- 300 Great New York group soul (not Chicago as is sometimes stated).
