CENTER ON JAPANESE ECONOMY AND BUSINESS Working Paper Series December 2013, No. 334 Japanese Newspapers David Flath This paper is available online at www.gsb.columbia.edu/cjeb/research COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK December 10, 2013 Japanese Newspapers David Flath* Faculty of Economics,Ritsumeikan University abstract In Japan, newspapers enjoy a special exemption from antimonopoly prohibitions against resale price maintenance (suppliers’ stipulations that bar downstream firms from price discounting), but are each required to set uniform prices throughout Japan. In fact, the newspapers have rarely changed their subscription prices in recent years, and the three leading national dailies, together accounting for about half the total industry circulation, and thirteen other papers accounting for another one eighth of industry circulation, all have set exactly the same price (3,925 yen per month for combined morning-and-evening editions, and 3,007 yen per month for morning-only). The remaining local papers all set lower prices. Econometric analysis here shows that Japanese newspaper subscription prices are far below the levels that would maximize joint profit, given the newspaper content. The authorized resale price maintenance, and prohibition against prices that vary geographically, seems to have allowed only modest collusive price increases. • Nonlinear Pricing of Japanese Newspapers
CENTER ON JAPANESE ECONOMY AND BUSINESS Working Paper Series December 2013, No. 333 Nonlinear Pricing of Japanese Newspapers David Flath This paper is available online at www.gsb.columbia.edu/cjeb/research COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK November 14, 2013 Nonlinear Pricing of Japanese Newspapers David Flath* Faculty of Economics,Ritsumeikan University Abstract In Japan, the newspapers with the greatest daily circulation offer both morning and evening editions in most of their distribution areas. Their prices per page of actual content are different for morning-and-evening subscribers than for morning-only subscribers, so the subscription price schedules could be described as sliding scales. These are tariff schedules that are step functions, and thus nonlinear. My focus is on two aspects of nonlinear pricing by Japanese newspapers. The first is that pricing and circulation of the differing editions reveal parameters of the demand for newspaper content. I estimate these parameters using nonlinear least squares and find that price elasticity of demand is around 1.2, while elasticity of demand with respect to pages of content is around 0.5. Estimates from micro-data have price elasticity around 1.3 and elasticity with respect to pages of content around 0.4. The second aspect of nonlinear pricing on which I focus is the distorting effect of demanders’ incentive compatibility constraints on the newspaper publishers’ choice of newspaper content. The newspaper publishers wastefully reduce the number of pages of content of their morning editions to deter morning-and-evening subscribers from cancelling their evening subscriptions. It is wasteful in the sense that the marginal value to subscribers of an additional page of content in the morning edition is less than the marginal cost.

  • An Introduction to Japanese Society, Third Edition
This page intentionally left blank An Introduction to Japanese Society Third Edition Essential reading for students of Japanese society, An Introduction to Japanese Society now enters its third edition. Here, internationally renowned scholar Yoshio Sugimoto writes a sophisticated, yet highly readable and lucid text, using both English and Japanese sources to update and expand upon his original narrative. The book challenges the traditional notion that Japan comprises a uniform culture, and draws attention to its subcultural diversity and class competition. Covering all aspects of Japanese society, it includes chapters on class, geographical and generational variation, work, educa- tion, gender, minorities, popular culture and the establishment. This new edition features sections on: Japan’s cultural capi- talism; the decline of the conventional Japanese management model; the rise of the ‘socially divided society’ thesis; changes of government; the spread of manga, animation and Japan’s popu- lar culture overseas; and the expansion of civil society in Japan. We Tell Your Story to the World Asian Media Landscape Series English version Japan Media Landscape Cover photo was taken at Ikebukuro subway station In Japan, Tokyo , March 2014 Copyright belongs to PR Newswire Preface The cover photo was taken by the editor in March 2014 at the Ikebukuro subway station in Tokyo and it was a subway advertisement for a digital application newly launched by the well-known Japanese newspaper, Asahi Shimbun. Unlike most typical ads, neither the newspaper nor the app is shown. Instead, an innovative approach was taken: to tell a story through a family. In this way, readers who access Asahi Shimbun’s news (whether through the medium of print, online, or mobile) are provided with an opportunity to discuss the latest newsworthy events together with their families, and thus creating and maintaining familial bonds. Viewed from another perspective, this ad reflects the forward push of a newspaper with 135 years of history, and its efforts to convey its ecosystem and reader positioning in this new media era. Japan which has the most developed newspaper industry, boasts some of the largest newspaper in terms of circulations in the world, where newspaper kiosks are still ubiquitous on the streets and in subways. According to the 2013 data from the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), half of the Times are changing, and society top 10 circulated newspapers in the world are in Japan. At the same time, as one of the countries where smart devices are already widely adopted is progressing. Do newspapers with a highly developed mobile internet network, Japan's media industry need to keep up with the trends? is at the forefront of exploring and developing the possibilities of new media.
