The characters are F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce and other literary giants as they live their legendary bohemian lifestyles in Paris. The Left Bank Gang in this story they aren't writers but cartoonists, with comics being the height of culture in this alternate world. Not only are these writers now comic book The Left Bank Gang, they are distinctly comic book characters as Jason has transformed them into his trademark anthropomorphic dogs and birds. As these characters contemplate their lives, Fitzgerald in particular is down and out. The book is a comment on the literary acceptance comics have been getting in recent years. All the anxieties these creators have to deal with are just as relevant to writers and cartoonists now as they were for the Lost Generation. Then, in The Left Bank Gang rather abrupt twist only Hemingway could be responsible for, the group decides to rob a bank, turning into a Tarantinoesque caper complete with different perspectives on the same chaotic event. Here this theme is kept more on the background, at least compared to other Jason's comics that I have read.

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This study analyzes the techniques that Canadian comics life writers develop to construct personal histories. I examine a broad selection of texts including graphic autobiography, biography, memoir, and diary in order to argue that writers and readers can, through these graphic narratives, engage with an eclectic and eccentric understanding of Canadian historical subjects. Contemporary Canadian comics are important for Canadian literature and life writing because they acknowledge the importance of contemporary urban and marginal subcultures and function as representations of people who occasionally experience economic scarcity. I focus on stories of “ordinary” people because their stories have often been excluded from accounts of Canadian public life and cultural history. Following the example of Barbara Godard, Heather Murray, and Roxanne Rimstead, I re- evaluate Canadian literatures by considering the importance of marginal literary products. Canadian comics authors rarely construct narratives about representative figures standing in place of and speaking for a broad community; instead, they create what Murray calls “history with a human face . the face of the daily, the ordinary” (“Literary History as Microhistory” 411).

Are they the visible articulation of some unconscious knowledge or desire -- No, probably not. Are they the new literature of the twenty-first century -- Possibly, possibly... This course offers a reading survey of the best comics of the past twenty years (sometimes called “graphic novels”), and supplies the skills for reading comics critically in terms not only of what they say (which is easy) but of how they say it (which takes some thinking). More importantly than the fact that comics will be touching off all of our conversations, however, this is a course in writing critically: in building an argument, in gathering and organizing literary evidence, and in capturing and retaining the reader's interest (and your own). Don't assume this will be easy, just because we're reading comics. We'll be working hard this semester, doing a lot of reading and plenty of writing. The good news is that it should all be interesting. The texts are all really good books, though you may find you don't like them all equally well. The essays, too, will be guided by your own interest in the texts, and by the end of the course you'll be exploring the unmapped territory of literary comics on your own, following your own nose.

One front-runner was Guy Delisle, a Canadian animator whose baffled narrator stumbles through various overseas postings, revealing Duran Duran, Imelda Marcos and Me more about life in Pyongyang, Burma and Jerusalem in just a couple of panels than by Lorina Mapa (Conundrum Press) many documentaries do in an hour. Other new books include Collecting Sticks, a THE SETTING tenderly amusing fable of glamping and parenthood for the post-festival, post-Bear Canada and the Philippines Hunt generations, On the Camino, a rite-of-passage lope along the epic pilgrimage route, and The Sound of the World by Heart, whose story pans across New York as a photojournalist tries to spend 60 days there without speaking to a soul. A simple frame, a few speech bubbles and a little cross-hatching can be remarkably evocative and poignant – and no medium does thoughtful silence and interior dialogue quite as well as a graphic novel. ‘It’s a different way of connecting,’ says Lorina Mapa, Collecting Sticks by Joe who spent six years creating Duran, Duran, Imelda Marcos and Me, inspired by her Deci (Jonathan Cape) childhood in Manila and covering everything from Filipino streetfood to religion.

I have mentioned several short stories and a few poems and plays in this bibliography, but I did not make any sustained attempt to identify such works. I have not listed works of music, though many songs exist which deal with these subjects. Most entries are briefly annotated, though I well understand that it is impossible to accurately describe a book in only one or two sentences. As one reads science fiction and fantasy novels set in Texas, certain themes repeat themselves. There are, of course, numerous works about ghosts, vampires, and werewolves. Authors often write about invasions of the state, not only by creatures from outer space, but also by foreigners, including the Russians, the Germans, the Mexicans, the Japanese and even the Israelis. One encounters familiar plot devices, such as time travel, in other books. Stories often depict a Texas devastated by some apocalypse – sometimes it is global warming, sometimes World War III has been fought, and usually lost, by the United States, and, in one case, the disaster consisted of a series of massive earthquakes which created ecological havoc and destroyed most of the region's infrastructure. The mystique of the old west has long been an alluring subject for authors; even Jules Verne and Bram Stoker used Texans in stories.
