Wallacea Baly, 1859, Pistosia Weise, 1905 and Neodownesia Gressitt, 1953 are transferred from Gonophorini to Bothryonopini based on absence of setigerous pores on the pronotum, mouthparts situated close to antennal inser- tions, scutellum on the same plane as the elytra, and morphology of the larva. Pistosia, stat. restit., and Neodownesia, stat. restit., are removed from synonymy of Wallacea based on the structure of mouthparts and antennae. Three species are included in Pistosia: P. maculata Weise, 1905, P. terminalis (Baly, 1869) comb. nov. (from Estigmena Hope, 1840), and P. testacea (Fabricius, 1801); all endemic to Sulawesi and neighbouring small islands. Type localities of all three species are specifi ed and Arecaceae is considered as potential host plant family. Three species are also included in Neodownesia: N. sita (Maulik, 1919) comb. nov., N. mediovittata (Gestro, 1920) stat. restit. & comb. nov., and N. rubra Gressitt, 1953, stat. restit.; the fi rst two are transferred from Wallacea and the last two are removed from synonymy with N. sita based on study of type material. Distribution of Neodownesia species is corrected, N. mediovittata and N. sita are reported as new to Thailand. Keys to genera of Bothryonopini and to species of Pistosia and Neodownesia are also given.

Malindang and Environs The Biodiversity Research Programme (BRP) for Development in Mindanao is a collaborative research programme on biodiversity management and conservation jointly undertaken by Filipino and Dutch researchers in Mt. Malindang and its environs, Misamis Occidental, Philippines. It is committed to undertake and promote participatory and interdisciplinary research that will promote sustainable use of biological resources, and effective decision-making on biodiversity conservation to improve livelihood and cultural opportunities. BRP aims to make biodiversity research more responsive to real-life problems and development needs of the local communities, by introducing a new mode of knowledge generation for biodiversity management and conservation, and to strengthen capacity for biodiversity research and decision-making by empowering the local research partners and other local stakeholders. E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] 4Corresponding author Abstract Dicladispa testacea (Linnaeus, 1767) is a member of the tribe Hispini Gyllenhal, 1813 associated with plants of the family Cistaceae Juss. and is widely distributed in the Mediterranean Basin. Immature stages are described in detail, including line drawings, chaetotaxy, sculpture of integument, and SEM photos of morphological details. This is the first detailed description of immatures in the tribe Hispini, and this can be regarded as a model description for studies of other species in the tribe. Diagnostic characters for this species in comparison with other described larvae and pupae of the genus Di- cladispa and the sympatric Hispa atra Linnaeus, 1767 are discussed. Some remarks on the biology of Dicladispa testacea, such as host plants, feeding patterns of adults, structure of larval and pupal mines, are also given. Key words: morphology, immature, larva, pupa, Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae, Dicladispa testacea, Cistus sp., Mediterranean region Introduction The leaf beetle genus Dicladispa Gestro, 1897 is a member of the speciose tribe Hispini Gyllenhal, 1813 (Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae) and comprises 125 species occurring mostly in tropics and subtropics of the Old World with a few species in the warm parts of the Palaearctic Region (Staines 2012).

  • Powder-Post Beetles (Coleoptera: Lyctidae)
Insect Pests of Bamboos in Asia INBAR ■ Heterobostrachus aequalis Waterhouse BIOLOGY This is a polyphagous species and a common pest of packing cases, plywood chests and other wood-based industrial products. It is a minor pest of dry bamboos. The adult beetle is black, 6-15 mm long, cylindrical and with a rough hooded prothorax, usually with curved hooks at the distal ends of elytra. Female adult lays eggs singly on rough surfaces of dry bamboos. The larvae, after hatching, bore into the soft portion and gradually make a wide tunnel. The tunnels are tightly packed with fine wood dust and the host bamboo is soon reduced to powder. The life cycle of the beetle is annual. Other bostrychid beetles commonly seen are Dinoderus pilifrons Lesne, Cryphalus satonis Mat. and Heterobostrychus hamatipennis Lesne. Powder-post Beetles (Coleoptera: Lyctidae) Several lyctid beetles primarily attack dried bamboo timber and bamboo products. Although these species are quiet common, they cause much less damage to bamboos than bostrychid beetles. ■ Lyctus africanus Lesne DISTRIBUTION India. HOST Bambusa bambos and Dendrocalamus strictus. 133 INBAR Insect Pests of Bamboos in Asia BIOLOGY The beetle is flat, light brown to almost black in colour, and about 2-7 mm long. After hatching, larvae start feeding on wood tissues converting it to a very fine Fig. 58: Adult of Lyctus africanus powder, which remains closely packed in the tunnel. Moisture content of less than 10% is unsuitable for development of the larvae. After about one month of pupal period, beetles emerge by cutting approximately circular holes. The life-cycle varies from one to three years, depending on the availability of food and moisture within the wood.
