Pornography, Morality, and Harm: Why Miller Should Survive Lawrence
File: 02-DIONNE-Revised.doc Created on: 3/12/2008 1:29 PM Last Printed: 3/12/2008 1:34 PM 2008] 611 PORNOGRAPHY, MORALITY, AND HARM: WHY MILLER SHOULD SURVIVE LAWRENCE Elizabeth Harmer Dionne∗ INTRODUCTION In 2003, a divided Supreme Court in Lawrence v. Texas1 declared that morality, absent third-party harm, is an insufficient basis for criminal legis- lation that restricts private, consensual sexual conduct.2 In a strongly worded dissent, Justice Scalia declared that this “called into question” state laws against obscenity (among others), as such laws are “based on moral choices.”3 Justice Scalia does not specifically reference Miller v. Califor- nia,4 the last case in which the Supreme Court directly addressed the issue of whether the government may suppress obscenity. However, if, as Justice Scalia suggests, obscenity laws have their primary basis in private morality, the governing case that permits such laws must countenance such a moral basis. The logical conclusion is that Lawrence calls Miller, which provides the legal test for determining obscenity, into question.5 ∗ John M. Olin Fellow in Law, Harvard Law School. Lieber Title: House of Cards Advisor: Sheila Schroeder Degree Date: November 2013 Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to approach adapting a comic book into a film in a unique way. With so many comic-to-film adaptations following the trends of action movies, my goal was to adapt the popular comic book, Batman, into a screenplay that is not an action film. The screenplay, House of Cards, follows the original character of Miranda Greene as she attempts to understand insanity in Gotham’s most famous criminal, the Joker. The research for this project includes a detailed look at the comic book’s publication history, as well as previous film adaptations of Batman, and Batman in other relevant media. -
An Interview with Pierre Berton
An Interview with Pierre Berton JON C. ST0TT Pierre Berton needs no introduction to Canadians. Writer, broadcaster, and television personality, he speaks up for and writes about the Canadian identity, delving into aspects of our past, examining how others see us, and criticising, when necessary, our present. In addition to many books of history and social criticism, he is the author of The Secret World of Og, one of the most popular and best selling Canadian children's books of all times. The following interview, in which he discusses his work as an historian and his views on Children's Literature, is a pastiche of interviews taped with Berton over a four year period. In 1977 and 1978, I interviewed him for a series of book review programs I was doing for CBC radio in Edmonton. Last fall, in preparation for this interview article, I talked with him in Edmonton and at Toronto's International Airport. STOTT: Wordsworth said that the child is father to the man. Can we talk about the birth of Pierre Berton as a writer? Did growing up in the Yukon and then in Victoria, two very historical places, make you think in terms of the past? BERTON: No, I didn't think in terms of the past at all. At school, I wasn't particularly good in history, and I certainly wasn't good in English or composition or grammar. I was better at mathematics. I wasn't going to be a writer at all. However, my grandfather was a very famous journalist, and my mother wrote. -
Sexo, Amor Y Cine Por Salvador Sainz Introducción

SEE[K]ING ABORIGINAL MOTHERS: REPAIRING COLONIAL DISRUPTIONS THROUGH MARIE CLEMENTS‟ THE UNNATURAL AND ACCIDENTAL WOMEN by Laura Lynne Johnston B.A., Malaspina University College, 2003. A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (English) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2010 © Laura Lynne Johnston, 2010 ii ABSTRACT Attempting to understand mainstream dismissal and degradation of missing and murdered Aboriginal women, this thesis investigates Marie Clements‘ The Unnatural and Accidental Women. Retelling the story of Gilbert Paul Jordan‘s murder of ten women, predominantly Aboriginal, from Vancouver‘s Downtown Eastside, The Unnatural and Accidental Women exposes racist media representations that tell little of the women, emphasizinig instead their high levels of alcohol and Aboriginal background. Perpetuating stereotypes of Aboriginal women as promiscuous and alcoholic, such representations overlook Jordan‘s methods of poisoning his victims with alcohol. Central to this thesis is the mother/daughter relationship within the play. Abandoned by her mother at age four, Rebecca begins to search for her mother on the drug- addiction riddles streets of Vancouver‘s downtown ―Skid Row.‖ Asking the question: Why do high numbers of Aboriginal women leave their families to live impoverished and often addicted lives full of danger and isolation?, this thesis explores governmental policies disenfranchising Aboriginal women and enforcing the removal Aboriginal children into residential schools and white foster homes. Within this context, this thesis argues that Aunt Shadie acts as a maternal metaphor, reflecting Aboriginal philosophies that honour the significance of the mother/child bond. -
Phylogeography of the Prickly Sculpin (Cottus Asper) in North‐Western North America Reveals Parallel Phenotypic Evolution Acro
Journal of Biogeography (J. Biogeogr.) (2015) 42, 1626–1638 ORIGINAL Phylogeography of the prickly sculpin ARTICLE (Cottus asper) in north-western North America reveals parallel phenotypic evolution across multiple coastal–inland colonizations Stefan Dennenmoser1,2*, Arne W. Nolte2, Steven M. Vamosi1 and Sean M. Rogers1 1Department of Biological Sciences, University ABSTRACT of Calgary, Calgary AB T2N 1N4, Canada, Aim Glacial cycles during the Pleistocene may have frequently contributed to 2Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary parallel evolution of phenotypes across independently evolving genetic lineages Biology, 24306 Pl€on, Germany associated with separate glacial refugia. Previous studies based on morphology suggested that the prickly sculpin (Cottus asper) survived the Last Glacial Maxi- mum (LGM) in southern coastal and inland refugia, favouring allopatric diver- gence between coastal and inland prickling phenotypes, which vary in the degree to which spine-like scales cover the body of the fish. Herein, we aimed to test whether parallel evolution across multiple genetic lineages rather than a single-lineage origin of highly prickled inland sculpins could serve as an expla- nation for the biogeographical distribution of prickling phenotypes. Location North-western North America, Southeast Alaska and Canada (British Columbia). Methods We used data from mitochondrial haplotypes and 19 microsatellite loci to identify distinct genetic lineages as a basis to interpret patterns of phe- notypic evolution. Results The occurrence of multiple mtDNA groups suggests that highly prick- led inland phenotypes comprise more than one genetic lineage. Both mtDNA and microsatellite data are consistent with post-glacial dispersal along the coast and repeated coastal to inland colonization events, as opposed to inland dis- persal of a single lineage from a southern refugium to northern regions. -
