BREMER Department of Geosciences, Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas (Manuscript received 31 January 2019, in final form 14 June 2019) ABSTRACT South Korea has among the highest rates of suicide in the world, and previous research suggests that suicide frequency increases with anomalously high temperatures, possibly as a result of increased sunshine. However, it is unclear whether this temperature–suicide association exists throughout the entire year. Using distrib- uted lag nonlinear modeling, which effectively controls for nonlinear and delayed effects, we examine temperature–suicide associations for both a warm season (April–September) and a cool season (October– March) for three cities across South Korea: Seoul, Daegu, and Busan. We find consistent, statistically sig- nificant, mostly linear relationships between relative risk of suicide and daily temperature in the cool season but few associations in the warm season. This seasonal signal of statistically significant temperature–suicide asso- ciations only in the cool season exists among all age segments, but especially for those 35 and older, along with both males and females. We further use distributed lag nonlinear modeling to examine cloud cover–suicide associations and find few significant relationships. This result suggests that that high daily temperatures in the cool season, and not exposure to sun, are responsible for the strong temperature–suicide associationsfoundinSouthKorea. 1. An examination of temperature–suicide associ- ations on a seasonal level will not only be a valuable tool for health practitioners, but also has the potential to shed light on the causal mechanisms responsible for any observed temperature–suicide relationships, a topic on which many questions remain. 2. Data and methods Three major cities across South Korea were selected on the basis of size, climate, and geography, with each city representing a unique climate and geographical lo- cation (Table 1; Fig. 1). Hence, herein, carbon storage and carbon uptake per capita are quantified and mapped for all administrative districts of the Seoul Metropolitan City through (1) the analysis of tree cover via on-site tree investigation and aerial imagery and (2) geographic information system (GIS) analysis, targeting the Seoul Metropolitan City of South Korea, which has achieved the highest level of development. Results indicate that the total carbon storage and carbon uptake of Seoul are approximately 1459024 t and 147388 t/yr, respectively; the corresponding per unit area values are approximately 24.03 t/ha and 2.43 t/ha/yr, which are lower than those of other cities. In particular, carbon storage and uptake per capita benefits of the urban areas, except for the urban forest areas, are confirmed to show a maximum difference (~20 times) between the regions.

For this purpose, two PCMs with different phase change characteristics were prepared and the phase change temperatures and thermal conductivities were compared. The diurnal thermal behavior of PV panels with PCMs under the Seoul climate was evaluated using a 2-D transient thermal analysis program. This paper discusses the heat flow characteristics though the PV cell with PCMs and the effects of the PCM types and macro-packed PCM (MPPCM) methods on the operating temperatures under different weather conditions. Selection of the PCM type was more important than the MMPCM methods when PCMs were used to enhance the performance of PV panels and the mean operating temperature of PV cell and total heat flux from the surface could be reduced by increasing the heat transfer rate through the honeycomb grid steel container for PCMs.

    The Role of King Sejong in Establishing the Confucian Ritual Code Kang Sook Ja This paper reviews the political leadership of King Sejong the Great in the process of establishing ritual codes such as the Five Ritual Codes for royal families and Zhu Xi Ceremonial Occasions (朱子家禮). A Confucian nation is the place where a benevolent king of virtue governs a country according to Confucian principles. Among the Five Ritual Codes for royal families, gilye (吉禮, worship for heaven, earth, famous mountains, and long rivers in the country) is the most important rite as an agricultural society. However, worship for heaven should be solely conducted by the emperor according to the Confucian ritual code, Record of Rites (�記). Therefore, King Sejong has replaced worship for heaven by worship for goddess of earth and crops (社稷, sajik) in praying for rain. Binrye (賓禮) is a rite in foreign diplomatic policy and ritual ceremony in hosting diplomatic delegates. The Joseon dynasty also sent tributes to China to show due respect as a stronger nation. In military rites (軍禮), practicing military arts (講武, gangmu) was conducted twice a year, once in spring and once in autumn in the form of hunting. However, practicing military arts also disturbed the agricultural produce from farmers to a in the countryside. King Sejong temporarily reduced the scale and numbers concern- ing practicing of military arts so as to mitigate the pains of farmers during the season. Chigangnyeong (吹角令) is an order that organizes military personnel in an emergency. While Chigangnyeong was misused sometimes, a lot of peo- ple were uncomfortable and afraid of being implicated in treachery.

This study evaluated the economic value of terminal aerodrome forecasts (TAF), which has not been previously quantitatively analyzed in Korea. The analysis data included 374,716 international flights that arrived at Incheon airport during 2017–2019. A cost–loss model was used for the analysis, which is a methodology to evaluate forecast value by considering the cost and loss that users can expect, considering the decision-making result based on forecast utilization. The value was divided in terms of improving fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions. The results of the analysis indicate that the annual average TAF value for Incheon Airport was approximately 2.2 M–20.1 M USD under two hypothetical rules of refueling of discretionary fuel. This value is up to 26.2% higher than the total budget of 16.3 M USD set for the production of aviation meteorological forecasts by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).
