VOLUME 20 NUMBER 20 OCTOBER 15TH, 2012 Historic Cabinet meeting outlines plans for Abaco By Timothy Roberts After holding a historic Cabinet Meeting in Abaco on October 2, Prime Minister Perry Christie and his ministers announced a number of decisions made for Abaco, including more than $1.6 million in promised road repair and infrastructure and a pledge to increase police manpower on the island. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works Philip Brave Davis noted that his ministry made a decision to improve the roads after a site inspection in September and are now making “final decisions” to fix pothole-filled roads and infrastructure in Marsh Harbour, Dundas Town, Murphy Town, Great Abaco and Green Turtle Cay. The projected works include reme- dial and improvement road works at Marsh Harbour, Dundas Town and Murphy Town with the expected expenditure of about $1 million for the work. Work in Green Tur- tle Cay is expected to cost $250,000. Mr. Davis said that a contract award- ed by the former administration was not finished by the contractor and that the government plans to complete work on Forrest Drive’s Sidewalk at an additional $150,000. “This government shares your con- cerns and feels your frustration and can Cabinet was held on Abaco on October 2, 2012. the location most convenient for you. Due to our growth, we have expand- ed our neem leaf drying capacity in our production facility to meet the increased demand for neem leaves used in our Neem Leaf Capsules, Extract and First Aid Spray. The importance of understanding the many uses of neem, its properties and benefits to helping to maintain a healthy lifestyle led us to commission Pamela Pat- terson, to write a book based on Nick’s over twenty years experience growing, harvesting and personally using our neem products. We are excited to announce the launch of our new book “Health Benefits of Neem from the Abaco Neem Farm” now available on Amazon.com and soon to be available in our store and our distribu- tor outlets. Please visit Amazon.com and “like” our book. Our message is always that prevention is the best medicine and Neem is your best first response product. It is also important to note that our farm is “certified organic” and that we produce pure neem oil second to none in the world. Passionate rallies and personal attacks set stage for a bitter fought by-election

Politicians and government officials have been a common sight on Abaco over the past few weeks. Leading up the North Abaco by-election on October 15 things have become heated. Controversies have been attached to both FNM and PLP candidates and each party pushes to get the leading edge going into the voting booth. The third part candidate continues to campaign as well as she looks to pull off an upset. North Abaco has the entire Bahamas watching as the candidates do the political dance. Prime Ministers, former and present, as well as party leaders have vouched for their candidates and made their case to the people. Whatever the outcome on October 15, this will mark a historic moment for the North Abaco constituency and for The Bahamas. Above and left: Greg Gomez along with the Rt. Hon. Hubert Ingraham at a rally in Cooper’s Town. Above and right: Renardo Curry along with Prime Minister Christie at a Treasure Cay rally. For more details see page 2.

Vandals strike the Abaco National Park

By Timothy Roberts Park Warden, Marcus Davis, for the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) was dis- mayed on a recent visit to the Abaco Na- tional Park as he found the newly enhanced Road 38 vandalized. Road 38 was cleaned and improved as a nature trail with a picnic area, signs and garbage cans for the benefit of local residents and tourists. However, accord- ing to David Knowles, Director of Parks, person(s) unknown to them went on a shooting spree in the Park causing damages to signs and garbage cans, starting a fire around the picnic tables and leaving trash scattered on the ground. Mr. Knowles said they did not know who the culprits are but said that he was disappointed that someone would do such a thing. “A lot of time and money went into the infrastructure so that the visitor’s ex- perience could be enhanced and enjoyed,” he said. Mr. Knowles appeals to the culprit(s), and others who would follow suit, to be more conscientious and remember that people who visit our islands, and who keep our economy going, visit these parks as well. “We need to work together to keep our island, and the national parks, beauti- ful for our benefit and out of consideration for those who visit.” Page 2 Section B The Abaconian October 15, 2012 Politics Greg Gomez, the candidate for the During the same rally the FNM Party 30, 2007.
