PART 573 Defect and Noncompliance Report

On August 27, 2008, Crane Carrier Company (manufacturer) was notified by our supplier Caterpillar Inc. that a defect related to motor vehicle safety may exist with Aftertreatment Regeneration Device (ARD) Extension Pipes used on Caterpillar C13 Diesel Engines and installed in Crane Carrier vehicles. Caterpillar filed a recall with your office on August 20, 2008. This is our notification to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in accordance with 49 CFR, Part 573.6, Defect and Noncompliance Information Report.

Body style: Refuse Packer, Drilling Rig

The recall population was identified by computer search of all cab and chassis’ built with 50 specific engine serial numbers identified by Caterpillar. This search identified all cab and chassis containing the recalled engines.

3. The total number of vehicles recalled potentially containing the defect by model year.

Total number potentially affected by the recall: 46 Additionally: 3 engines are in my inventory, not installed in vehicles. 1 vehicle destroyed by fire, total loss.

4. The percentage of vehicles recalled estimated to actually contain the defect is 100%.

III. Describe the Defect

5. Description of the Defect: The extension pipes attached to the Aftertreatment Regeneration Device (ARD) may develop a hole, and heat and flame may escape during the regeneration of the Diesel Particulate Filter, which may result in a fire hazard.

The engines were purchased from our supplier Caterpillar Inc.. The Crane Carrier part numbers of the defective parts: 087-2135, 87-2136, 87-2146

IV. Chronology in Determining the Noncompliance

6. On August 27, 2008, Crane Carrier Company Service Department was notified by Caterpillar via email that fifty (50) engines we had purchased were affected by a safety recall. The email identified the engines by serial number. My computer search of the engine serial numbers identified the corresponding chassis serial numbers. Sales files identified the customer involved and the locations of the units. On September 2, 2008, I submitted our initial notification to NHTSA.

V. Identify the Remedy

Description of Manufacturer’s remedy for the Noncompliance: The remedy will be determined and performed by Caterpillar through their service network.

VI. Identify the Recall Schedule

All vehicles involved in the recall where identified by September 12, 2008 and owner verification was completed. On this date Caterpillar was notified and supplied with vehicle and owner information.
