The Harvard Innovation Labs Ecosystem Harvard i-lab, Harvard Launch Lab, and Pagliuca Harvard Life Lab

Harvard i-lab, Harvard Launch Lab, and Pagliuca Harvard Life Lab The Life Lab is one of three interconnected spaces that make up the combined culture and community of the Harvard Innovation Labs ecosystem. You are now part of that ecosystem and its Venture Incubation Program (VIP).

The Harvard i-lab, is our educational collaborative for all current Harvard students from any Harvard school to explore innovation and entrepreneurship at any stage. The i-lab — its resources, mentoring opportunities, and programming — is open to all VIP members of the larger Harvard Innovation Labs ecosystem. This includes office hours with advisors and Entrepreneurs in Residence (EiRs), as well as the Da Vinci prototype room, and the Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) lab.

Launch Lab X is a 9-month program that begins in September and culminates in May. It’s comprised of three 90-day sprints – each sprint culminating in a pitch and feedback session with investors, potential customers, and industry insiders. You’ll figure out what you don’t know and have time and support to improve.

The Pagliuca Harvard Life Lab, the latest extension of this ecosystem, is our curated community for early-stage life sciences ventures. These eligible Harvard alumni, faculty, post-doctorals, and students are provided with a fully equipped wet lab, collaborative coworking space, business-building programming, and access to the entire Harvard Innovation Labs.

Venture Profiles and Cross-Innovation Labs Directory

As a member of this community, we encourage you to connect and exchange your ideas with peers within your specific lab space as well as the ecosystem as a whole. As part of our goal to create more interaction, each venture shares a brief profile on the Life Lab website. This allows members of the community to explore the diverse ventures that make up our ecosystem.

Our 7 Golden Rules:

1. Be nice. 2. Say hello to each other, always. 3. Golden Rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated 4. Conference rooms are for conferring with others. 5. Eat and drink responsibly. 6. If you need something, just ask. 7. Be real, be authentic.

Remember…

This is not simply a coworking space – it is a community. You get out what you put in. Collaboration = Shared Success.

About the Building: Access and Security

Life Lab:

The Life Lab is accessible to members with ID (HUID) clearance 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Life Lab is located on the (HBS) campus.

For safety and security, the facility is surveilled by HBS Security. For information about emergency protocol, see ‘Safety & Emergencies’ in the following section. • Working Hours: A Life Lab team member will greet you and your visitors, Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm. The team can also help with questions and any issues that arise. • After Hours: For any after hour issues or emergencies, please call HBS Security at 617-495- 5577.

The Life Lab has two main work areas: • The first floor is open co-working space, which is accessible to all Life Lab members and their guests. • The second floor is shared lab bench space and one private lab suite, accessible only to scientist members designated to do lab work there. Anyone working in this space must have completed additional EH&S training.

Guest/Visitor Policy

Visitors are welcome at the Life Lab. Due to the nature of the facility, we require that you are personally responsible for your guest while they are in the building. You will need to escort your visitor throughout their time in the Life Lab. To help maintain the security of the building, any visitor who does not have their own key card is required to sign in at the reception desk and wear a visitor badge on the premises. Visitors are not allowed access to the lab unless they are accompanied by a Life Lab scientist member. Visitors need scope and purpose approval by the Life Lab team prior to any laboratory work. Minors are not allowed in the 2nd floor lab.

Contractors or part-time employees who perform work onsite two or fewer days per week and are not otherwise listed as Team Members on Exhibit A will be considered visitors. These employees/contractors must sign in like any other visitor. In the case that an employee or contractor is onsite more than two days a week, they must be registered with the Innovation Labs as a Team Member and added to Exhibit A. This triggers an additional monthly per-person charge for use of the facility. Please refer to Exhibits B and C for more details.

i-lab: The i-lab is accessible to Life Lab members. A 24-hour security officer is posted at the main entrance of the i-lab.

Venture Status Change

New members of current Ventures, please Notify the Operations Associate, if you are expanding your team. All members must undergo orientation facilitated by the Sr. Operations Associate. All new members will be required to participate in EH&S onboarding as outlined in the training section.

Moving Out

Members (individuals): Notify the Director of the Life Lab two weeks prior to the departure of any individual member. Individual members will be exited through the system as managed by the Operations Lead. The Operations Lead will work with the member and venture to adjust billing and, access.

Venture: When it is time for your venture to move on, please provide the Director of the Life Lab with at least 30 calendar days (by the first of the month prior to move out) advance notice of termination. The occupancy deposit will be used on the last month of occupancy for the departing venture. As a venture departs, we will arrange an exit meeting to learn about your experience and feedback as a valued member of the community.

Safety & Emergency Response

Open co-working safety is ensured through a strong community. This is a collaborative and shared environment, so if you see something, say something. As a member of this community we value you and your concerns. If at any point you would like to discuss an issue, a Life Lab team member will be available to assist.

Open co-working: You are responsible for safeguarding any computers, equipment, documents, or other materials you may bring into or leave at the Life Lab. To encourage exchange and connections with those around you, desks are not assigned and members cannot create a permanent station. All companies are assigned a locker for personal storage as well as a filing cabinet.

Lab: We require certain levels of training to protect our lab. Safety protocol training is a prerequisite as outlined in new member on-boarding. For any questions or concerns pertaining to lab safety, contact Shawn Ayube, Director of the Life Lab.

Training:

All members of the Life Lab community must go through General Awareness Training and Emergency Action Plan Training with Harvard EH&S. Scientists working in any lab must also attend Chemical Hygiene Plan Training. Any scientists working with Biological (BL2) materials must attend additional Biosafety & Bloodborne Pathogens Training. Additional trainings will be offered periodically.

All trainings mentioned above are offered by Harvard EH&. Onboarding training takes place twice a month. Note that failure to complete training in a timely manner will lead to restrictions on lab and facility access. 6

Evacuation: Fire alarm = Evacuation Meeting place = Life Lab parking lot If the fire alarm is triggered, everyone must evacuate the Life Lab immediately, without delay. Please congregate in the Life Lab parking lot, between Batten Hall and the Life Lab. Once out of the building, we ask that team leaders do a headcount to ensure everyone in your venture reporting at Life Lab for the day is present. Please let a Life Lab team member know that all employees are accounted for. Please do not leave the area or re-enter the space until we have confirmed that everyone is accounted for and the premises are safe from the fire department or HBS facilities.

For more safety/emergency information pleae refer back to the Emergency Action and Contigency plan.

Co-Working Resources:

Common Space

As with all of the Harvard Innovation Labs co-working spaces, be friendly and respectful.

Coworking creates community

There are no assigned desks in this facility. We ask that first floor hot-seat desks be used only by paying members. All other work spaces are available for use by members and visitors. Since desk space is limited, we ask that members leaving a desk for more than 1-hour of work in the lab, meetings, or any other purpose remove all personal items and vacate the desk for use by others. Desks will be cleaned off by custodial staff monthly.

Lab, Equipment, and Common Space Maintenance and Cleanup

Keeping our space and equipment in working order requires all users to be responsible for maintaining and cleaning spaces as they use them, and leaving spaces in the same or better condition than they were found. This applies to the open lab, shared lab and office equipment, and in co-working spaces such as conference rooms. If you find that equipment is not functioning properly, please notify a member of the Life Lab team as soon as possible. Please be respectful to other ventures’ lab supplies and equipment. If you are unsure about a shared resource, ask a Life Lab staff member or a fellow venture.

Lost & Found

If you lost anything on the HBS campus, the Lost & Found office is located at the Operations Service Center in the basement of Shad Hall.

Alcohol Policy

Life Lab Safety as it pertains to the Life Lab 2nd floor space after consuming alcohol:

OSHA does not have specific regulations covering alcohol consumption. However, OSHA’s General Duty Clause, Section 5(a) (1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, requires employers to provide a place of employment that “is free from recognizable hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious harm to employees.” The intent of this clause is to ensure a safe work environment and reduce workplace safety liability to employers. Therefore, the Life Lab has put in place the following policy:

10

All Life Lab tenants/members are expected to be fit for work in a laboratory environment and remain fit for the duration of the day. Members must not be impaired by alcohol or other substances while working in the laboratory. Use of alcohol for social functions or any other circumstances may be permitted under the condition that the use of alcohol does not contravene the Members’ ability to effectively carry out work safely. With this said, lab members/staff are not permitted back into the lab space following events where alcohol has been consumed until the next business day.
