To watch the work of Paul Thomas Anderson is to watch movies at their most alive. In a return to the big screen, Joaquin Phoenix plays a troubled soldier in post WWII America…he rages through life like an animal, unable to keep a job, to attract a woman, to live in his own skin. By chance one night he jumps on board a docked ship and stows away. He soon discovers the ship belongs to Lancaster Dodd, the charismatic founder of a new religion. In scenes of sometimes shocking soul-baring, the two forge a primal bond – until the disciple begins to question his master.

THE FIRST WINTER DIR. RYAN MCKENNA 2012 | CANADA | 72 MIN FRI JAN 11 TO SUN JAN 13 - 7:00 PM WED JAN 16 - 7:00 PM Starring Rob Vilar, Eve Majzels and Alek Rzeszowski Director Ryan McKenna and lead actors will be present opening night

Premiering at Montreal's prestigious Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, director Ryan McKenna has created a dryly-funny gem about unrequited love. Vilar gives a beautiful deadpan performance as a DJ living in Portugal who learns that an affair with a woman named Sophie has led to her pregnancy. He flies back to Winnipeg to be by her side only to encounter an icy reception and a forbidding city. McKenna has captured Winnipeg in all its mid winter darkness with beautiful cinematography and a bleak sense of humour reminiscent of Finnish master Aki Kaurismaki and Jim Jarmusch. Created under the rules of the seven point “Brutalism in Cinema Manifesto” whereby the new cinema of Winnipeg is stark, austere, brutal and cold...but told with jokes.

5 JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2013 NO MAN CAN DEFINE ME: THE FILMS OF WINSTON WASHINGTON MOXAM Curated & introduced by Scott Birdwise

The Winnipeg Film Group is pleased to present the first retrospective of the films of Winston Washington Moxam (1963-2011). Moxam is, to date, the most significant black filmmaker to emerge from . His independent body of work spans almost two decades, from 1992 to 2010, and includes short fiction, documentary, and two features. All of these works address issues of race, racism and social justice, and significantly reflect the experience of living in Winnipeg and Manitoba. In order to present the depth and diversity of Moxam’s films, the retrospective is composed of two sets of screenings – the first highlights his shorter works and then we present his first feature length film Barbara James, a compelling fiction film about a single black woman in her early 30s who, in light of an unplanned pregnancy, must come to grips with her life. Barbara James is a strong example of Moxam’s oeuvre in its marriage of a concern with race and social justice, an emphasis on narrative, and a realist style with surreal flourishes. In addition to the screenings, this event also features the launch of an accompanying interpretive catalogue published by the Winnipeg Film Group. The catalogue contains contextual essays and personal considerations by Scott Birdwise, Daniel Eskin and Matthew Rankin, and includes a filmography and photographs of Moxam at work as well as stills from his films.

UNFINISHED SPACES DIRS. ALYSA NAHMIAS & BENJAMIN MURRY 2011 | CUBA | 86 MIN THU FEB 7 - 7:00 PM FRI FEB 8 - 9:00 PM

In 1961, three young, visionary architects were commissioned by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara to create Cuba's National Art School on the grounds of a former golf course in Havana, Cuba. Construction of their radical designs began immediately and the school's first classes soon followed. Dancers, musicians and artists from all over the country reveled in the beauty of the schools, but as the dream of the Revolution quickly became a reality, construction was abruptly halted and the architects and their designs were deemed irrelevant in the prevailing political climate. Forty years later the schools are in use, but remain unfinished and decaying. Castro has invited the exiled architects back to finish their unrealized dream. Unfinished Spaces features intimate footage of Fidel Castro, showing his devotion to creating a worldwide showcase for art, and it also documents the struggle and passion of three revolutionary artists.
