If anyone can reveal the parents of these grexes, please contact the Registrar. 2 There is a measure of uncertainty about the seed parent tentatively registered as Epi. secundum. On the application form it was given as Epi. 'Pretty Princess', which is registered for Plant Breeder’s Rights in Japan, and is according to sources in Japan, a cross between Epi. elongatum (a synonym of Epi. secundum) 'Pretty Lady' and Epi. 'Orihashi Red', which cultivar has not been traced. 3 Originated as a spontaneous hybrid seedling, probably from a cross-pollination by a bee, that appeared in the greenhouse of Ichiro Enomoto, Japan. The grower was Kichigoro Suzuki. As this hybrid is now available from nurseries in several countries outside Japan the name is formally established for use in The Plant Finder and elsewhere. A Trade name is Amitostigma x Enomotoe.

Laelia dawsonii separated from L. anceps. In order to facilitate the registration of greges involving L. anceps subsp. dawsonii the combination L. dawsonii (J.Anderson) Crawshay in Gard. Chron. 32: 414 (1902), Basionym: Laelia anceps var. dawsonii J.Anderson in Gard. Chron. 1868: 27 (1868), is here adopted for use in registration. A full synonymy for this taxon is provided in Halbinger & Soto, Laelias of Mexico 63-64 (1997), published as a supplementary volume to Oquidea (Mexico) vol. 15. The following grexes change a registered parent from L. anceps to L. dawsonii: Lc. Coastal Splendor (1987); Doctor Anton DeFede (2000); Icing Images (1998); Scallywag (1998).
Laelia grandiflora (Lex.) Lindl. replaced by L. speciosa (Kunth) Schltr. The adoption of L. speciosa, the name with date priority, involves a change of parent to 22 grexes.
Validation of the name Myrmecolaelia x fuchsii Hamer. This name applies to a natural hybrid between Myrmecophila wendlandii and Laelia rubescens collected by Robert Fuchs during 1976, while engaged in a field trip in Nicaragua. The nothogenus Myrmecolaelia [Myc.] F.W.Sander & Rolfe was established in Orch. Rev. 28: 50 (Mar.-Apr. 1920). Unfortunately, the publication of Myc. fuchsii has not been accepted as valid due to a deficient Latin description. In order to validate the name, a Latin diagnosis based on the original Spanish and English description published by Fritz Hamer in Dodson, C. H. (1985) Icones Plantarum Tropicarum plate 1236 is provided here, at the request of staff at R. F. Orchids. Myrmecolaelia x fuchsii Hamer ex J.M.H.Shaw, hyb. nat. nov. Planta inter M. wendlandii (Rchb.f.) Kenn. et L. rubescens Lindl. quasi intermedia et verisimiliter ex hybridatione harum specierum orta. Herba epiphytica ad 40 cm; pseudobulbis compressis, bifoliis. Labellum dimido inferiore breviter trilobatum, carinis 3, prominentibus e basi labelli gradatim accedens inter se, in centro lobi intermedii commiscentibus et unicarinatis. Holotypus: Nicaragua, Esteli, north of Estelí, near Río Estelí, 300 m alt., growing on rock in full sun, Robert Fuchs s.n. 26th November 1976 (SEL). This plant is usually encountered in cultivation under the unpublished combination Schombolaelia fuchsii.
Notes on Phaius In the past, the names Phaius grandifolius Lour. and Phaius tankervilleae (Banks ex L’Her.) Blume have been accepted as grex parents for registration. However, there is no valid reason to continue to accept them as distinct grex parents. Phaius tankervilleae is based on a drawing of a plant cultivated in London about 1776, that is thought to have originated from China. A lectotypification, based on a collection from Ceylon [Sri Lanka], is proposed by Jayaweera in Revised Handbook to the Flora of Ceylon 2: 155 (1981). Phaius grandifolius is based on cultivated plants seen in Cochinchina (a province in what was South Vietnam), by Joâo de Loureiro, a Portuguese missionary who was appointed as naturalist to the King of Cochinchina. It was first described in his Flora Cochichinensis, 1790. Thus no original specimens of either entity are now available for examination. John Lindley was evidently the first to suspect that these two names applied to the same taxon and merged them in 1831 under the name Phaius grandifolius, which he evidently thought was the older of the two names. As it happens, he was wrong and the name Phaius tankervilleae is older by about one year. Thus the acceptance of the two names in to orchid registration appears to be based on Lindley's error, as the name grandifolius was then taken up and used in Rolfe and Hurst's The Orchid Stud- Book (1909). It is evident that as no original specimens are extant, a critical application of the two names to minor variants is questionable at the very least. There is no guarantee that, even if the plants currently grown as Phaius grandifolius and Phaius tankervilleae are different, the application of the names is correct. Consequently, no useful purpose is served by continuing to uphold both names in the register. Interestingly, Averyanov in his Checklist of Vietnam Orchids (1990, edition) p.139-140, does not distinguish between Phaius grandifolius and tankervilleae, commenting "This is a very polymorphous, widely cultivated species naturalised in a number of countries." Recent study of the complex using molecular and morphological data supports the recognition of two species: Phaius wallichii Lindl. in Nepal and Phaius tankervilleae over the rest of its range, probably including Australia. Phaius wallichii has larger flowers that are not pendant, sepals not white on the back, and lip with a golden throat and a purple bar across the lower part. While Phaius tankervilleae may be distinguished by smaller pendent blossoms with white-backed sepals and no colour bar across the lip. See P.Cribb in RHS Proceedings 127: 49 (2003).
Establishment of new cultivar epithets in Pleione. Pleione formosana ‘Lilac Pearl’ Pseudobulbs dark green, ovoid, to 2.5 cm diameter. Flower solitary, 5- 7.5 cm across, soft pale lavender with red markings on lip. Dorsal sepal narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, 3.3-5.3cm long x 1-1.6cm wide, acute. Lateral sepals oblique, narrowly elliptic, 4.2-6 cm long x 1-1.6 cm wide, acute or subacute, all pale lavender. Petals linear- lanceolate 4-5.7cm long x 1-1.6 cm wide, pale lavender. Lip obscurely three-lobed, 4-5.7 cm long x 3.3-4.4 cm wide, emarginate with lacerated margins on apical half; mid-lobe obscurely subquadrate; callus of 3 interrupted lamellae, spotted with deeper lavender, margin pale lavender fading to white in the throat. Column 2.6-3.5 cm long, obscurely dentate at apex, white. Flowers later than most Pln. formosana cultivars. Selected by R. Cavender from material collected wild in Taiwan.
Pleione Shantung gx ‘Top Score’. Sepals off-white to very pale pink. Petals pale rose pink. Lip yellow inside with fimbriate apical margin. Pleione Ulei Wackernagel gx ‘Pearl’. Sepals and petals pale rose pink to almost white. Lip pale rose to almost white; apical margin recurved, deeply laciniate, callus yellow.
