Questions and hypothesis: How successful are pollination in three tropical dry forest orchids? How is pollination influenced by floral display and floral rewards (as suggested by floral micromorphology)? We hypothesized a positive effect of floral display on pollinia removal and deposition rates. Studied species: Barkeria whartoniana (C. Schweinf.) Soto Arenas, Clowesia dodsoniana E. Aguirre, and Cyrtopodium macrobulbon (La Llave & Lex.) G.A. Romero & Carnevali. Study site and dates: Nizanda (Oaxaca), Mexico; flowering periods of 2013 and 2014. Methods: We calculated pollinia removal and deposition rates, identified floral visitors and analyzed flower microstructure to search for structures potentially producing rewards. -

Postal Code: 540003. *Author for correspondence: [email protected] Rec.: 2019-05-10 Acep.:2020-01-10 Abstract Orchids are affected by several factors that impair their spreading, which is necessary to know the viability of their seeds. The aim of this research was to determine the most suitable preconditioning treatment to potentiate the tetrazolium test in Epidendrum barbaricum seeds. Initially, the mature capsules were collected near the city of Pasto in the Department of Nariño (Colombia), and seeds were obtained. Subsequently, the seeds were submitted to four pretreatments: immersion in distilled water, 1% hypochlorite, 10% alcohol and 10% sucrose. Seeds were then rinsed with distilled water and exposed to two concentrations of 2,3,5-trifenyl tetrazolium chloride (0.25%, 1%) and different exposure times (6, 12, 24, and 48 hours). To perform the tests, the 5 ml syringe with cloth filter method was used. The viability test results were corroborated with the in vitro germination test, using the MS (Murashige and Skoog) culture medium. -

President’s Note Greetings Hope your summer has been going as well as can be under the circumstances. Getting back to normal seems to be a never-ending process with bumps in the road. We continue to make the best of it with the internet and by phone to sustain our orchid interests and stay in contact with the many friends we have made through our society. During the summer heat damage can affect your orchids. Is your plant showing the common signs of heat damage? Signs of Heat Stress and Damage Your orchids will let you know if there is a problem. Signs of heat stress and subsequent damage. • Freckles • Red or purple tint • Withering of leaves or flowers. Much like us, an orchid can burn, and it will show immediate signs of it. If you see any red or purple on the leaves, then your orchid was likely burned. However, even if you don’t notice any immediate symptoms, that does not mean that your orchid was not damaged. -

Comparative vegetative anatomy and systematics of Laeliinae (Orchidaceae) WILLIAM LOUIS STERN & BARBARA S. CARLSWARD Abstract Laeliinae are one of the most prominent orchid subtribes, with c. 40 genera and nearly 1500 species, and contain a disparate group of taxa with widely varying morphological features. There does not appear to be a complex of characters to which one can refer in order to delineate the subtribe as a whole. Thus, it was thought that vegetative anatomy might provide clues to the monophyly of the group. The microscopic structure of the leaves, stems and roots of representatives of most of the genera was studied. It was concluded that the anatomy lacks overall uniformity and that vegetative characters alone are insufficient to assess the relationships amongst the genera. The only nearly consistent anatomical feature was the abaxial row of fibre bundles in the leaves. -

D., Associate Dean, Graduate School May, 2010 i ABSTRACT Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) is a water-conserving mode of photosynthesis present in approximately 7% of vascular plant species worldwide. CAM photosynthesis minimizes water loss by limiting CO2 uptake from the atmosphere at night, improving the ability to acquire carbon in water and CO2-limited environments. In neotropical orchids, the CAM pathway can be found in up to 50% of species. To better understand the role of CAM in species radiations and the molecular mechanisms of CAM evolution in orchids, we performed carbon stable isotopic composition of leaf samples from 1,102 species native to Panama and Costa Rica, and character state reconstruction and phylogenetic trait analysis of CAM and epiphytism. When ancestral state reconstruction of CAM is overlain onto a phylogeny of orchids, the distribution of photosynthetic pathways shows that C3 photosynthesis is the ancestral state and that CAM has evolved independently several times within the Orchidaceae. -

On February 12, 2009, the world celebrated the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin. His contributions to the study of evolution and human origins are well known, but his botanical research is underappreciated. Darwin published nine different books that focused on domesticated plants, insectivorous plants, climbing plants, and other botanical subjects, but his study on orchids is the most notable because it was the first book he published after the Origin of Species (1859). Darwin’s book On the Various Contrivances by which British and Foreign Orchids are Fertilised by Insects (1862) was a systematic overview of both temperate and tropical orchid groups and their pollinators. The nine chapters treated members of Orchideae, Arethuseae, Neottieae, Vanilleae, Malaxideae, Epidendreae, Vandeae, Cymbidieae (especially Catasetum), and Cypripedioideae. -
