Evidence of historical thinking can be found in the Lithuanian Chronicles; the attitudes of the 16 th c. historians are reviewed, including the debates with the Poles regarding the separateness and sovereignty of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The lectures contain such topics as Lithuanian historiography in the Renaissance, Baroque, and Enlightenment. Considerable attention is paid to the emergence of history as a scholarly discipline at the Imperial University of Vilnius. The course highlights the role that historical scholarship played in the development of the Lithuanian identity and in the nation’s modernization and rejuvenation. The maturity of the contemporary historical scholarship owes especially much to the period of the First Republic.
