Panorama: This is a study of chanting as performed by a new type of healing shamans born from the mixing of Amazonian and Western practices in Peru. These new healers originate from various extractions, indigenous Amazonians, mestizos of mixed race, and foreigners, principally Europeans and North-Americans. They are known as vegetalistas and their practice is called vegetalismo due to the place they attribute to plants - or vegetal - in the working of human consciousness and healing rituals. The research for this study was conducted in the Tarapoto region, in the Peruvian highland tropical forest. It is based both on first hand information collected during a year of fieldwork and on my personal experience as a patient and as a trainee practitioner in vegetalismo during the last six years. The key idea to be discussed in this study revolves around the vegetalista understanding that the taking of plants generates a process of learning to communicate with spirits and to awaken one’s consciousness to a broader reality - both within the self and towards the outer world. -

RESEARCH ARTICLE Energies Alterations and Chakras’ Energies Deficiencies as one of the Causes of Psoriasis Huang Wei Ling Infectious Diseases, General Practice, Nutrition, Acupuncture, Pain management, Medical Acupuncture and Pain Management Clinic, Franca, São Paulo, Brazil ABSTRACT Introduction: Psoriasis is an inflammatory and proliferative condition of the skin characterized by plaques covered by silvery scales mainly in the exterior surfaces, lumbar region, and scalp. In traditional Chinese medicine, psoriasis is caused by the internal Heat generating a Fire, caused by emotional factors leading to a blocked in the Qi movement. This Fire can enter the Blood circulation or stagnate due to improper diet or due to exogenous Fire. Purpose: the purpose of this study is to demonstrate that patients with psoriasis symptoms have energies alterations and chakras’ energies deficiencies and the balance of this internal energies using Chinese dietary counseling, auricular acupuncture associating with apex ear bloodletting and replenishing the chakras’ energies meridians using homeopathies medications according to the theory Constitutional Homeopathy of the Five Elements Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine are important tools to treat this kind of patients. Methods: Two cases report of patients with history of psoriasis symptoms during years using topical medications and other treatments without any success. They both began treatment using Chinese dietary counseling avoiding dairy products, raw foods, sweets, cold water and also, fried foods, chocolate, honey, coconut, alcoholic beverages, and melted cheese. The radiesthesia procedure was done and reveled that all chakras’ energies were in the lowest level of energy, rated one out of eight and the treatment replenishing the chakras’ energies meridians using homeopathies medications according to the theory created by the author entitled Constitutional Homeopathy of the Five Elements based on Traditional Chinese Medicine. -

Radionics In Agriculture by Steve Diver and George Kuepper May 1997 This article (slightly revised from the original) does a fair job of describing the routine applications of radionics to farming. It was written as a Current Topics publication for the ATTRA (Appropriate Technology Transfer for Rural Areas) Project. ATTRA is a USDA funded project whose purpose is the dissemination of information on sustainable agriculture. Visit ATTRA's Website at http://www.ATTRA.org. The use of radionic instruments for plant and animal diagnosis and treatment is gaining increased attention in alternative agriculture circles. While several commercial labs and consultants support this technology, little information is available through conventional channels like the Extension Service or land-grant colleges. Currently, radionics, and the related concepts of radiesthesia and homeopathy, are largely practitioner-based technologies. An exception is homeopathy, which receives some attention in mainstream medical journals. By contrast, all three are licensed, medical disciplines in the United Kingdom and several other European countries. Radionics is controversial because it is a metaphysical science. It is not recognized by mainstream agricultural science; thus, useful information is available only from select sources. Even within the alternative (sustainable, organic) agricultural communities, there is disagreement regarding its utility and validity. Yet, there are many reports of success among those who have given radionics a serious look; and the number of practitioners— farmers, gardeners, crop consultants, veterinarians— appears to be growing. The objective of this discussion is neither to persuade nor dissuade the reader regarding the validity of radionics. The purpose, rather, is to shed light on a poorly understood practice that is being adopted by a growing number of people within sustainable agriculture. -

Santería: From Slavery to Slavery Kent Philpott This, my second essay on Santería, is necessitated for two reasons. One, requests came in for more information about the religion; and two, responses to the first essay indicated strong disagreement with my views. I will admit that my exposure to Santería,1 at that point, was not as thorough as was needed. Now, however, I am relying on a number of books about the religion, all written by decided proponents, plus personal discussions with a broad spectrum of people. In addition, I have had more time to process what I learned about Santería as I interacted with the following sources: (1) Santería the Religion,by Migene Gonzalez-Wippler, (2) Santería: African Spirits in America,by Joseph M. Murphy, (3) Santería: The Beliefs and Rituals of a Growing Religion in America, by Miguel A. De La Torre, (4) Yoruba-Speaking Peoples, by A. B. Ellis, (5) Kingdoms of the Yoruba, 3rd ed., by Robert S. Smith, (6) The Good The Bad and The Beautiful: Discourse about Values in Yoruba Culture, by Barry Hallen, and (7) many articles that came up in a Google search on the term "Santería,” from varying points of view. My title for the essay, "From Slavery to Slavery," did not come easily. I hope to be as accepting and tolerant of other belief systems as I can be. However, the conviction I retained after my research was one I knew would not be appreciated by those who identified with Santería. Santería promises its adherents freedom but succeeds only in bringing them into a kind of spiritual, emotional, and mental bondage that is as devastating as the slavery that originally brought West Africans to the New World in the first place. -

Rector @ Jennifer Ross The Battle for the Legality and Legitimacy of Ayahuasca Religions in Brazil Ayahuasca is a hallucinogenic concoction that is said to have been used for thousands of years by various indigenous tribes who lived throughout the upper Amazon and Andes. The term Ayahuasca is a Quechua word meaning ‘vine of the souls’ or ‘vine of the dead’. The most common method for making Ayahuasca combines the bark of the liana vine Banisteriopsis Caapi with the leaves of the Psycotria Viridis; water is added and the mixture is boiled down to a brown-colored “tea”.1 The active ingredient in Ayahuasca that causes an altered state of consciousness is N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT). -

EWP 6537: ENTHEOGENIC SHAMANISM 3 Units Mondays 3 - 6 pm, Room 307 Mission building Spring, 2010 Instructor: Susana Bustos, Ph.D. (510) 987-6900 – [email protected] Course Description: This course explores the fundamentals of shamanic and shamanic-oriented traditions whose practices are based on working with sacred visionary plants. While a deeper focus is placed on Amazonian ayahuasca shamanism, an overview of traditions that use peyote, sacred mushrooms, and iboga lays the foundation for a participatory inquiry and discussion of common threads in entheogenic shamanism. A variety of disciplines and approaches to the topic inform the survey of basic themes, such as the functions of visionary plants in shamanic cultures, cosmology, ritual context and the use of music, healing practices, and the integration of experiences. Cultural, philosophical, and psychological questions are addressed throughout the course, for example, shadow aspects of entheogenic shamanic practices, the ontological status of visionary experiences, and the implications of the spread of entheogenic practices into the West. Learning Objectives: After completing this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand the traditional framework that sustains the use of entheogens in shamanic practices. 2. Be familiar with a variety of approaches to explaining the effectiveness of these practices. 3. Critically assess entheogenic practices, particularly within shamanic-oriented contexts. The notion of cure in the Brazilian ayahuasca religions Sandra Lucia Goulart Assistant Professor at Cásper Líbero College, São Paulo, Brazil and researcher in NEIP (Psychoactives Interdisciplinary Study Group), São Paulo, Brazil Abstract. This article discusses concepts and practices of healing in Brazilian religions which have in common the use of a psychoactive beverage mainly known by the names of Daime, Vegetal and Ayahuasca. These religions are elaborated from the same set of cultural traditions which nonetheless unfolds in different ways. All of them originate in the Brazilian Amazon region and in some cases, these processes expand to other parts of Brazil and abroad. We compare here the ways in which the healing is experienced and explained in these religions, emphasizing the representations concerning this beverage used in all of them. The case of these religions points to the complexity of the relation between both scientific and religious medicines. 1. Saint Expeditus SAINT OF THE DAY 19-04-2021 If St Jude Thaddeus and St Rita of Cascia are particularly invoked for impossible causes, St Expeditus, the most popular of the Martyrs of Melitene, is similarly venerated as the saint of urgent causes par excellence. The most important information about him can be found in the Hieronymian Martyrology, which was originally written in the first half of the 5th century. Thanks to it we know the day of his martyrdom, 19th April, and the place, Melitene (present-day Malatya, Turkey), the site of an ancient legionary fortress, where Expeditus was martyred together with St Hermogene and other Christians. In Arminia Militana civitate Hermogeni, Gagi, Expediti, Aristonici, Rufi, Galatae una die coronatorum , reads the Hieronimian Martyrology. The most widespread tradition reports that he was a contemporary of Saint Philomena (c. 290-302), the very young Christian martyred at the behest of Diocletian, who was also the patron saint of impossible causes. Expeditus is also mentioned as commander of the XII Roman Legion, known as the Fulminata (it had been formed by Julius Caesar and was active until the 5th century), which guarded the crossing of the Euphrates at Melitene. Iconography shows him always dressed as a Roman soldier. His name, Expeditus, which in Latin means 'free from encumbrances, free from burdens' (in Greek it means 'ingenious'), probably inspired the essential features of his depictions, which are devoid of heavy weapons and armour, since in military terminology expediti were light infantrymen. His iconography has rendered the various hagiographic accounts with very suggestive symbols. -
