Mike Huckabee, Republican

As governor of Arkansas, I cut taxes and welfare. Balanced the budget every year, for 10 years. And raised family income by 50%. We didn’t slash, burn, or hurt people. Leave people impoverished. We empowered people to live a better life. I'm not a republican because I grew up rich. I'm a republican because I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life poor. Waiting for the government to rescue me.

One thing that has to happen in America is moving the power away from Washington. Where people are so disconnected from the way that so many ordinary Americans live. It's a disaster; power needs to be local, and limited. Because the closer government is to the people. The more accountable it is to the people who are being governed. Instead of fighting over the minimum wage.

I'm going to focus on solutions to help every American earn his or her maximum wage. I'll protect Social Security, and Medicare. Washington has done enough lying, and stealing. I’ll never rob seniors of what our government promised them, and even force them to pay for.

He had the capacity to take any situation. Look at it, and see how each decision he can make further down the road would affect the state. And the people. For Katrina we inherited 75,000 people. Through the whole thing Mike said, people first, paperwork later. Don’t treat these people like boxes.

I hope I never forget where I come from. I hope I never forget this porch. I hope I never forget what it's like to live in a neighborhood where neighbors know each other. And care about each other. Where people have to work hard just to be able to put the food on their table. Clothes on their kids back. Pay the rent on a rent house like the one I lived in.

There’s a lot more of America whose living like I grew up living. That will never live in the white house or a governor’s mansion.

I think the worst thing that can happen is that we forget where we've come from. Not only individually, but God help us, if we ever forget where we come from as a country.
