The Tour in Detail

Our exciting Chocó Cloud Forest tour took place in the north-west of the country, visiting many well-known birding sites in the Pichincha province. Birding began along the higher flanks of the Pichincha volcano at ~18,000 ft elevation, where we visited the Yanacocha reserve. Our first stop along the entry road produced a fantastic Red-crested Cotinga posing nicely atop a bush. Another great find here was a singing Tawny-rumped Tyrannulet. Further up, we got to see Paramo Pipits in a field and a distant Carunculated Caracara in flight. Another brief stop produced a Streak-throated Bush Tyrant for some and good views of both Spectacled Shining Sunbeam by Todd Fellenbaum Whitestart and Black-crested Warbler. The banana feeders at the reserve’s restaurant were incredibly productive when we got there, with fantastic views of Black-chested and Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanagers, Andean Guans, Yellow-breasted and Grey-browed Brushfinches, Masked and Glossy Flowerpiercers, Rufous- collared Sparrow and Great Thrush. The hummingbird feeders attracted gems like Buff-winged Starfrontlet, Shining Sunbeam, Great Sapphirewing, Tyrian Metaltail and Sapphire-vented Puffleg. The Sword-billed Hummingbird, with its extraordinary long bill, was an absolute stunner!

Next, we birded the Inca trail and its steep-sided trails. Inside the forest, we had incredible success with great views of three antpitta : Undulated, Rufous and Chestnut-naped! The latter was of the poorly-known but distinct West-slope race obsoleta, a probable future split. The showed surprisingly well and Todd got even a photo of it! Apart from our success with the understorey skulkers, we also ran into a couple of nice mixed-species flocks holding Golden-crowned Tanager, Blue-backed Conebill, Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager, White-throated and Black-capped Tyrannulets, Streaked , Pearled Treerunner, Superciliaried Hemispingus and Rufous Wren. At the hummingbird feeders Chestnut-naped Antpitta by Dušan Brinkhuizen at the far end of the trail, we successfully connected with

Golden-breasted Puffleg. Another awesome observation was a pair of White-throated Screech Owl at their day-roost! After a delicious lunch, we tried for our fourth antpitta of the day and got excellent views of Tawny Antpitta! Highlights of the afternoon’s drive downslope included an obliging White-capped Dipper at the Rio Alambi, and a stunning male Golden-headed Quetzal in the Tandayapa Valley!

The following morning there was a little rain, but it was not a problem, as we started off at the superb feeders of the Las Gralarias reserve. At the bananas, we got close-ups of Golden and Golden-naped Tanagers, Glossy- black Thrush, Orange-bellied Euphonia and Dusky Bush Tanager. Blue-winged and even Black-chinned Mountain Tanagers came in as well, but the real clown of the circus was Toucan Barbet. We watched a pair of this stunning Chocó endemic as they dropped down on the bananas making clicking sounds. As if there wasn’t enough action going on, we had to run to the other side of the building where we scoped a Plate-billed Mountain Tanager Finch by Dušan Brinkhuizen Toucan – another marvellous Chocó endemic! The hummingbird feeders attracted a wide array of species, with gems including Purple-bibbed Whitetip, White-booted Racket-tail, Velvet-purple Coronet, Violet-tailed Sylph, Empress Brilliant, Andean Emerald, Purple-throated Woodstar and Brown Inca. Up the road towards the Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve, we ran into various mixed-species flocks with species including Cinnamon Flycatcher, Beryll-spangled, Metallic-green and Grass-green Tanagers, Brown-capped Vireo, Russet-crowned Warbler, Pearled Treerunner, Streaked Tuftedcheek, Streak- capped Treehunter, Mountain Wren, Montane Woodcreeper and Blackburnian Warbler (the latter being a late boreal migrant). We also saw several Gorgeted Sunangels and Collared Incas along the forest edge, and a party of four obliging Masked Trogons was a memorable sighting! Another highlight was a cracking male Powerful Woodpecker spotted by Michael. However, the star bird of the day must have been the Tanager Finch. At our last-minute attempt, it was Anny that got us on some understorey activity, and suddenly a pair of this rare Chocó endemic popped out! We watched the Tanager Finches at ridiculously close range, and Sarah even got a decent picture with her cell phone!

At lunch we got some serious rain, but in the afternoon we went to lower elevations in the Mindo Valley, where it eased down a little. Bird activity in secondary habitat was good, with highlights including Bay-headed and Silver-throated Tanagers, Slaty and Red-faced Spinetails, Tropical Parula, Choco and Southern Beardless Tyrannulets, and a pair of Thick-billed Seed Finch. A visit to El Descanso was a superb move, with numerous great birds like Red-headed Barbet, Ecuadorian Thrush, Rufous Momot, Guira Tanager and a Powerful Woodpecker by Todd White-tailed Hillstar – now split by some authorities as Fellenbaum Rufous-gaped Hillstar!

Today we travelled to the Rio Silanche reserve, located in the humid lowlands of the Pichincha province. Our first stop along the entry road produced some great birds, including Striped Cuckoo, Masked Water Tyrant, Blue-necked Tanager, Cinnamon Becard, Streak-headed Woodcreeper, Pacific Hornero, Pacific Antwren, White-thighed Swallow and a male Violet-bellied Hummingbird. We also saw some more interesting birds in the palm plantations further up the road, including a couple of nice Choco Toucans and Pale-mandibled Aracaris. Over the years, the habitat in the area has been severely deforested and, sadly, the Rio Silanche Bird Sanctuary is now a small island of tall humid forest, a final refuge for many forest species in the area. Once inside the reserve, we started at the canopy tower, from where we got to watch some incredible birds at eye-level. As we got to the top viewing platform, we were greeted by a pair of Dusky Pigeons, a scarce Chocó endemic that is not often seen that well. A male Guayaquil Woodpecker perched on a snag nearby was another awesome sighting. A spectacular Yellow-throated Toucan was visiting its nesting cavity in a dead trunk located next to the tower. The hoped-for mixed-species canopy flocks did not move through, but we did get some stunners like Yellow-tufted Dacnis and Grey-and-gold Tanager. A Barred Puffbird was singing nearby but never came all the way to the tower. A juvenile Double-toothed Kite was scoped nicely. A nice flock of Bronze-winged Parrots was feeding quietly below us in a tree. Bronze-winged Parrot by Todd Fellenbaum

Back at the parking lot we ran into a substantial mixed-species flock, and some of the goodies that we picked out included Red-billed Scythebill, Plain Xenops, Wedge-billed Woodcreeper, Tawny-crested, Scarlet-browed and White-shouldered Tanagers, Sooty-headed and Choco Tyrannulets, Yellow- margined Flatbill, Slaty-capped and Olive-striped Flycatchers, Cinnamon Becard, Lesser Greenlet, Bananaquit and Green Honeycreeper. Both Blue- chested and Purple-chested Hummingbirds were visiting the flowers here. The reserve’s loop trail was challenging birding, but we did get to see some excellent birds, including Black-headed Antthrush, Bicolored and Chestnut-backed Antbirds, Dot-winged and Checker-throated Antwrens, White-whiskered Puffbird and a superb male Choco Trogon! The forest on the other side of the road was also productive, with White-tailed Trogon, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Masked Tityra, Ruddy Foliage-gleaner, White-bearded Manakin and Buff-rumped Warbler being some of the highlights. We also caught up with Barred Puffbird that briefly perched in front of us: a bird-packed day it was indeed! After dinner, a confiding Mottled Owl was Mottled Owl by Todd Fellenbaum photographed in the garden of the lodge.

The next day, we visited the Amagusa reserve in the Mashpi area. We had an incredible start at the reserve’s entrance road. Meeting our local guide, Sergio, he brought us straight to a pair of Choco Vireo – now that’s a rare one! At the same spot, the situation became even crazier when a Cloud Forest Pygmy Owl perched in front of us, being mobbed by the same Choco Vireos, together with Moss-backed Tanager and Indigo Flowerpiercer. Truly epic! A couple of hundred metres down the road, we got a nice pair of Orange-breasted Fruiteaters and a White-tipped Sicklebill came to feed on a roadside Heliconia flower. At the amazing feeders of Amagusa, we got a large variety of species that came in, including cracking Chocó endemics such as Black-chinned Mountain, Rufous-throated, Glistening-green and Moss-backed Tanagers. Other guests included Flame-faced, Golden-naped, Golden and Lemon-rumped Tanagers. At some point, Crimson-rumped Toucanets were eating away bananas at touching distance and even a male Golden- collared Honeycreeper came in – what a feast! The amazing hummingbirds here included Velvet-purple Coronet, Violet-tailed Sylph, Empress Brilliant, White-booted Racket-tail, Green Thorntail, White-whiskered Hermit and Purple-bibbed Whitetip. Further down the road, we carefully watched a female Orange- breasted Fruiteater on her nest. A Broad-billed Motmot posed with an in its beak. Glistening-green Tanager by Todd Fellenbaum

At another feeding station nearby, we enjoyed a delicious box lunch while the bird photography kept on pumping, with Toucan Barbets, Crimson-rumped Toucanets and Moss-backed Tanagers all at close range. A Black Solitaire in a fruiting tree next to us was just the icing on the cake! In the afternoon, we travelled to the Oilbird site near Chontal. On the way, we stopped for a couple of species, including Whiskered Wren. At the Morales farm, we added several new ones including a White-throated Crake that jumped out of a pasture. At the Oilbird ravine, we got to watch about a dozen of these bizarre nocturnal creatures at close range. Some adults were nesting, and we also saw some fatty grown up chicks. A darkish crake, seemingly larger than the White- throated Crake we saw earlier, flushed on the side of the road in front of us while driving. It could have possibly been the near-mythical Colombian Crake, but we were unable to confirm its identification.

After breakfast, we birded the fantastic subtropical forest of Septimo Paraiso. A pair of Zeledon’s Antbirds showed itself really nicely at the hide, but the nearby calling Uniform Antshrike did not show. A Wattled Guan that just had called was located Crimson-rumped Toucanet by Todd Fellenbaum perched in a treetop. A large mixed-species flock got us several new birds, including Buff-fronted and Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaners and a nice pair of Rufous-rumped Antwrens. After whistling back-and-forth, we eventually got great views of a stunning

Scaled Fruiteater. In the meantime, we had gotten Slaty Antwren and Nariño Tapaculo out of the dense undergrowth. Ecuadorian Seedeater, a recent split of Blue Seedeater, was heard singing in the distance. Very soon a male approached us and we got some great views of this rare species! Further down the trail, we heard our target species for the morning: Club-winged Manakin. Fairly soon, we got a nice male in view and we also got to see it make the toy-like sound with its wings! In the outskirts of Mindo, we successfully tracked down Coopmans’s Elaenia – a recently described species split from Lesser Elaenia. Tropical Gnatcatchers were new and we also finally got to see Olive-crowned Yellowthroat. Some descanso with cold beer at El Descanso was really nice. After lunch, some of us went to a site to look for Long-wattled Umbrellabird. Soon after arrival, it was Sarah that got us on a female of this sought-after cotinga! We searched the area for more umbrellabirds but without luck. However, we did get some other high-quality Chocó endemics like Pacific Tuftedcheek, Ochre-breasted Tanager and Yellow-collared Chlorophonia. The latter was watched in the scope for a prolonged time!

On the final morning of our tour, we visited the famous birding site Refugio Paz de las Aves, also known as “Paz de las Antpittas”. At dawn, we met Angel Paz, a famed birder and our local guide, “the antpitta whisperer”. We could hear the Andean Cock-of-the- Ochre-breasted Antpitta by Todd Fellenbaum rocks as we got out of the vehicle, which was a promising start. Once we got down to the lek site it was a cock-of-the-rock bonanza! We enjoyed the spectacle from a hide, with various males doing their noisy dances at close range. The scope views we got of this blood-red cotinga were just amazing. Next, we walked the road with a Lyre-tailed Nightjar on day-roost being a big catch. We tried for the scarce Dark- backed Wood Quail but we only got to hear it. According to Angel, the birds were shy as many of them were nesting. Giant Antpitta was nowhere to be found, and Angel had not seen it for weeks. The famed antpitta show was next on the program. Angel and his brother, Rodrigo, eventually showed us no less than three species of antpitta: Chestnut-crowned, Yellow-breasted and Ochre-breasted! The latter of the smaller genus Grallaricula was nicknamed Shakira, and we actually watched the bird while it was swinging its flanks! All the antpittas came in to feed on the earthworms put out by the Paz brothers – simply incredible. Crested Quetzal by Todd Fellenbaum Other goodies that we got to see in the forest were Tyrannine Woodcreeper and Uniform Antshrike. The deck at Paz’s restaurant was great birding too, and while we tried to enjoy a delicious “bolon de verde” with “aji” sauce, most of us were also busy taking photos of Toucan Barbets and Crimson-rumped Toucanets. After lunch, we visited the Alambi reserve. On arrival, we were greeted by a friend that pointed out a cracking male Crested Quetzal. The bird was perched in a ripe Aguacatillo tree (Persea caerulea) and, eventually, we saw up to three Crested

and two Golden-headed Quetzals in this magic tree! The hummingbird feeders were about the busiest we had seen, with a dozen species present, including a female Western Emerald. In the more arid valleys around Calacali, we successfully targeted several new species for the trip, including Golden Grosbeak, Band-tailed and Ash-breasted Sierra Finch, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Blue-and-yellow Tanager and Golden-rumped Euphonia – the latter species getting Todd over a milestone. What a memorable ending for our trip! ______Acknowledgements
