TAN YEN PENG TEO HUEY LING Migration encourages one to think of connections, at least because every migration TET LEE connects a point of origin and a destination (Patrick Manning, 2012). The constant, TINA CALLENDER roving humans, settling only for a term before moving on to a fresh patch of land VERNICE CHONG until we founded our first cities. Even so, we have an ever burning curiosity of VINATA GOSWAMY XIN XIAOCHANG “what is beyond that horizon?” YEO CHEE KIONG ZESTRO LEOW We yearn to travel, to see new sights, find new things, meet new people and experience a different culture from ours. It is evident that we did not change much since the days of old, never stopping always moving, roving back and forth within the planet. Exploration would resonate to us as a primal instinct or behaviour that we cannot elude from. Perhaps the reason for these outward bound intent to reach out to other peoples from other nations in rooted deep within ourselves. Urban Expedition is the statement of artists’ embodied with an inner wanderlust, to seek out things beyond the mundane, at the very core of us to better ourselves, and to bring home to share the exploits of such travels. Educated in the fine arts and landscape architecture, Han has, for three decades, channeled both passions into a body of work that makes significant comment about the changing landscape. Although it is the environment at large to which Han’s works generally refer in Singapore, where the landscape undergoes change at a brutal pace and too often with scant regard for flora, fauna, heritage or preservation, her words have particular resonance. Sun's artistic pursuit of truth is through oriental and western reasoning in art. Sun is intrigued by the knowledge fields of topology, archaeology, metaphysics, linguistics and mathematics. He is interested not in forms per se but in finding the form from which all forms originate. His creations are built upon this fundamental philosophy, resulting in a distinctive style and innovative technique. Yu-li's art was the unintended consequence of his pursuit of the "truth". He has developed the “Universal Language” in search of the universal platform upon which all knowledge fields converge; a search for the original state of form. His art has simple shapes and forms, but there is deeper meaning behind. Using the Universal Language he has discovered, his creations begin with the dot, forming a line, then progressing to a plane, and finally into volume. Sun gives back to community through charity efforts, educational outreach and advisory roles. love is a many splendored thing, 2005, 5mm steel plate (painted with epoxy paint), 50 x 30 x 15 cm. Yeo Chee Kiong (b. 1970) “My sculptures are essential forms crucial for situating the viewers in a unique arena. It is in this arena that the viewers could empirically feel and experience that ‘something’: which is simultaneously definable and unknown – the poetics of reverie.” Yeo Chee Kiong is a contemporary sculptor and installation artist who is fascinated with the language and spatial relationship between object, space and authorship. His work destabilises the familiar notions of spatial proportions and perspectives, whilst examining the human conditions in the construction of an extended surreal world. Yeo holds several appointments as President of the Sculpture Society (Singapore) (2015 - 2018), Chairman of Telok Kurau Studios Management Committee (2014 - 2015), and Advisor for Norwegian Collaborative Organisation for Contemporary Art Abroad, London (2011 - 2015). P. Gnana (b. 1979) “I love animals, and cows in particular hold a special place in my heart. The representation of the cow is very much a part of my childhood, in my hometown Neyveli, where my mother used to own and breed cows. My memories are filled with images of me assisting my mother in the upkeep of the cows – collecting grass, locating a missing cow and also birthing a calf!” he says, adding, “The cow in my life is not accidental, it’s an expression of an element that is undeniably linked to the innocence of childhood and to the deep affection for my mother.” P. Gnana paints, sculpts and creates conceptual installations, as one of Singapore’s leading artists. Indeed, he has obtained a highly-captivated audience in the Lion City and internationally, for the aesthetic and conceptual niche that he has created for himself within the ever-competitive dynamics and economics of urban art-making. This, he continues to achieve, by constantly counter-challenging or taming the forces that urge him to dispel his obsessive fascination towards the cow, a recurring symbol in his art since the last 9 years of his 25-year career as an artist. Teo Huey Ling (b. 1974) “To me the house is a manifestation of a self, it protects and restrict. A house is a home, it provides a sense of belonging and at the same time inhabit a comfort zone that inhibit adventures. In the work, a big cloud gives shelter and provides a sanctuary while it’s community or individuals manifest or emanate in collective thoughts. On a different note, the individuals of the lighted house are brewing dreams of living an inspired life. In either way, the whimsical work abstains giving definite meanings and allows the viewers to associate significances themselves.” Teo Huey Ling’s works is tremendously technique driven and involved intricate and laborious art processes. She believes that the concentrated activity will uncover the responsiveness hidden within the materials, thereby opening the spirit of the labour and its energy to the viewer. Her work has taken a multifaceted direction in drawings, contemporary ceramics and art installation.
