Suburban Development in Shanghai: a Case of Songjiang
CARDIFF UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF CITY AND REGIONAL PLANNING Suburban Development in Shanghai: A Case of Songjiang Jie Shen Supervisor: Professor Fulong Wu Thesis for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2011 ABSTRACT Since 2000, a new round of suburbanisation characterised by mixed-use clustered development has begun to unfold in China. This research aims to explore the dynamics of recent suburban growth in China and also provide an empirical case for enriching suburban theory. It is held that suburbanisation in China in its current form is by no means a spontaneous process, but results from capitalism’s creation of a new space to facilitate accumulation. Based on this view, the study examines the underlying forces of contemporary suburban growth with regard to three questions: what is the role of suburbanisation in China’s contemporary capital accumulation regime? How are the suburbs developed under coalitions of different actors? And how is suburban development shaped by demand-side actors? The study is founded on an intensive case study of Shanghai and one of its suburban districts, Songjiang. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods are used. Firsthand data from interviews and a questionnaire survey and a wide variety of secondary data were collected, providing a rich fund of knowledge for the research. While similar forms and functions to (post)-suburban settlements that have recently emerged in Western countries are found in Chinese suburbs, suburbanisation through new town development in China is a strategy of capital accumulation in response to a range of new conditions specific to China’s local context. New towns deal with the recentralisation of both fiscal and land development powers on the one hand, and accommodate the increasing housing demands of a diverse labour force on the other. -

Shanghai, China Overview Introduction The name Shanghai still conjures images of romance, mystery and adventure, but for decades it was an austere backwater. After the success of Mao Zedong's communist revolution in 1949, the authorities clamped down hard on Shanghai, castigating China's second city for its prewar status as a playground of gangsters and colonial adventurers. And so it was. In its heyday, the 1920s and '30s, cosmopolitan Shanghai was a dynamic melting pot for people, ideas and money from all over the planet. Business boomed, fortunes were made, and everything seemed possible. It was a time of breakneck industrial progress, swaggering confidence and smoky jazz venues. Thanks to economic reforms implemented in the 1980s by Deng Xiaoping, Shanghai's commercial potential has reemerged and is flourishing again. Stand today on the historic Bund and look across the Huangpu River. The soaring 1,614-ft/492-m Shanghai World Financial Center tower looms over the ambitious skyline of the Pudong financial district. Alongside it are other key landmarks: the glittering, 88- story Jinmao Building; the rocket-shaped Oriental Pearl TV Tower; and the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Media Release Singapore Art Museum Announces Singapore Biennale 2016 Title “An Atlas of Mirrors” marks the Fifth Edition of the Singapore Biennale Singapore, 16 March 2016 - The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) today unveiled the title for the fifth edition of the Singapore Biennale - An Atlas of Mirrors. Through this title, Singapore Biennale 2016 (SB2016) will explore curatorial and artistic themes that pivot on Southeast Asia, but also encompass East and South Asia. Taking place from 27 October 2016 to 26 February 2017, the four-month long international contemporary art exhibition is organised by SAM and commissioned by the National Arts Council of Singapore. SB2016 will feature several site-specific and commissioned contemporary works never seen before on the biennale circuit. SB2016 Title - An Atlas of Mirrors For centuries, atlases and mirrors have been instrumental in humankind’s exploration of the world as we navigate and map our journeys into the unknown. While the atlas helps to chart paths of discovery, the mirror offers reflections and perspectives which can be, at times, skewed and distorted. Bringing together the atlas and mirror as an imagined new ‘device’ creates possibilities for unexpected ways of thinking and seeing. An Atlas of Mirrors will draw on diverse artistic viewpoints that trace the migratory and intertwining relationships within the region, and reflect on shared histories and current realities with East and South Asia. SB2016 examines the challenges of the region’s contemporary conditions, and positions Southeast Asia as the vantage point from which the world can be pictured anew. Intercultural Communications Studies X:2, 2000 I. Weber Shanghai Youth’s Strategic Mobilization of Individualistic Values: Constructing Cultural Identity in the Age of Spiritual Civilization Ian G. Weber Queensland University of Technology Abstract This paper examines Shanghai youth response to the Chinese Government’s packaged ideal culture made available through the spiritual civilization program and broadcast on television. It focuses on how ‘upwardly mobile’ Chinese youth negotiate the discourses of collectivism and individualism through their interpretation of key television programming. The popular Chinese drama series ‘Beijingers in New York’, which incorporates both discourses, is used to reveal how these youth have woven individualistic values into their cultural identities and which manifest within their daily lives. The study found that these youth are strategic users of television. They absorb and mobilize individualistic values of ambition and progress, change, wealth, and materialism within a framework of collectivist values of filial piety, responsibility, harmony, and sacrifice for pragmatic purposes relating to personal, business, educational, and social goals. Introduction Life for young urban Chinese has changed dramatically from previous generations. They face different challenges, embrace different dreams, and pursue different opportunities than their parents. Such differences are associated with China’s move towards a freer market economy that encourages Chinese youth to follow Deng Xiaoping’s edict that ‘to get rich is glorious’. An important aspect of this freer society is youth exposure to a wider range of cultural experiences through television viewing. A television survey of 285 Shanghai youth aged between 15 and 35 years1 revealed the top 10 mentioned programming2 among this group were foreign films (46%), domestic news (43.5%), foreign and domestic sport (both 38.5%), foreign music (34.5%), foreign news (32.5%), travel (31%), Chinese comedy (25%), culture (24%), and soap opera (23%). -

Organic and fibrous in nature, malleable in manifold ways, and versatile as it is durable—these often overlooked yet unique aspects form the fundamental makings of a “handmade” substance that is, in fact, extremely versatile and essential to the creative pursuit and materialisation of concepts and projects that would have otherwise remained inexistent. FIBROUS Haegue Yang (Berlin/Seoul) pursued the organic and fibrous character of handmade paper, employing its abilities as a natural binder in the experimental work Spice Sheets (2012). The successful integration of raw spices and paper pulp to produce spiced paper signifies greater historical narratives, like the power of the spice trade and its key to the transformation of civilisations. -

Han Sai Por’s “Moving Forest’ is a new body of 50 breakthrough works produced in collaboration with STPI’s print and workshop team. Following Han’s recent show “Black Forest” at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Gallery, “Moving Forest” references a renewal of seasons, such as Spring embodied here in minimalist, landscape wall pieces, three-dimensional fruit objects and forest motifs bursting with colour and movement. At 70, Han is a formidable artistic figure in Singapore and continues to invigorate her creative approach with new material possibilities at STPI. She exchanges hard stone and marble medium for softer and flexible paper pulp. Integrating her sculptural sensibility, Han stretches paper’s potential to possess volume and textures as seen in the series Tropical Fruits and stunning, cast paper pieces Dawn and Topography Landscape. Pushing her artistic trajectory to new heights are interpretations of forest drawings in wood-cut prints Rooted and Nestles. Materialised in intricate carvings on woodblock and printed grain pattern, these robust, sinuous tree trucks and branches make powerful statements on the forces of nature. Modern sculpture pioneers Constantin Brancusi (Romania) and Henry Moore (United Kingdom) known for extreme simplification of forms are early influences for Han, who continues to push herself with physically challenging materials such as stone and marble. -

After the launch at Chronus Art Center in Shanghai, the exhibition will be shown at the Zagreb Contemporary Art Museum in winter and finally be displayed at the Queens Art Museum in New York the following year.
