The concert will showcase Danielle's wide ranging repertoire, including works by Mozart, Arditi, Rossini and the tradition of Broadway musicals, nodding to- wards the legacy of Leonard Bernstein in the centenary year of the composer's birth in 2018. Opera Soprano Danielle de Niese is more than just the most magnetic presence in modern classical music or the woman described by the New York Times magazine as "opera's cool- est soprano." She's also the performer who's shredding the classical rulebook with her unique combination of artistic cred- ibility and exotic 21st-century allure. On March 12 the film will be screened at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. For one and a half years, the filmmaker follows three ski moun- taineers as they prepare for the Patrouille des Glaciers, an incredibly tough race across the Swiss Alps. Florence wants to take part in memory of her father, but she is finding it tough to fit in with her team. Guillaume is an accomplished competitor. He struggles to find a balance between family, work and his passion. Antoine is emerging from a difficult period. Now he’s eager to prove his worth to the world. A raw and intimate jour- ney into the three protagonists' innermost motivations and the story of how this adventure transforms them. The NZZ writes about the movie: “No other sports event is more mystified in Switzerland then the ski tour competition in the Valais. The big strength of the movie “Encordés” (“Roped”) is that it does not contribute to this mystification but that the director succeeds in drawing a line between the Partouille and life. Fédéric Favre accompanies Florence, Antoine and Guil- laume during the long preparation and the race itself. His pro- tagonists are not professional athletes but amateurs, who search a lot of different things in the sport: refuge, confirmation, success, friendship – maybe even the sense of life.” In partnership65th with: Anniversary in partnership with: Wechat: pro_helvetia www.prohelvetia.cn Page | 2 Cultural Newsletter Consulate General of Switzerland in Shanghai Francophonie Festival: Le Roi Angus Indie-Folk Band from Geneva at the “Mars en Folie” Festival When & Where March 23, 2018, 19:30 – 20:30 Lifehub @ Jinqiao Shopping Mall 968 Jinqiao Rd., Pudong New District – 浦东新区金桥路 968 号 Tickets: Free entrance When & Where March 24, 2018, 19:00 Modern Sky Lab 3/F, 188 Ruihong Rd., Hongkou District – 虹口区瑞虹路 188 号 3 层 Tickets Scan the QR code on the right to reserve When & Where March 25, 2018, 18:30 Central Plaza@ Daning Life Hub 1918 Gong He Xin Rd, Jin’an District - 大宁国际商业广场中央广场舞台 Tickets: Free entrance Links www.leroiangus.com One of highlights of the music festival “Mars en Folie” will be the Geneva Indie band le Roi Angus. With their blend of vin- tage pop and psychedelic rock, their sound approaches something like very refreshing yé-yé acid. It’s an odd formula that’s drawn the attention of the Swiss media and given the band the key to the country’s most iconic clubs. It all started three years ago when singer Casim Admonk owned La Centrale, an abandoned telephone exchange on the outskirts of Geneva that had been turned into an under- ground club. He invited some great young and talented musi- cians playing psych Rock. They were a revelation for the vocalist; providing the perfect music to accompany his lyrics. Le Roi Angus was born soon after. Things moved quickly. A few months later, the five members of the newly-formed band locked themselves in a studio in Los Angeles to record their first album, îles Essentiel. It was released in the autumn of 2015 on Cheptel Records and their first single, ‘Sommeil Trompeur’, was aired soon after. Le Roi Angus is touring regularly in Switzerland, Europe and USA. • Shanghai, China Overview Introduction
Shanghai, China Overview Introduction The name Shanghai still conjures images of romance, mystery and adventure, but for decades it was an austere backwater. After the success of Mao Zedong's communist revolution in 1949, the authorities clamped down hard on Shanghai, castigating China's second city for its prewar status as a playground of gangsters and colonial adventurers. And so it was. In its heyday, the 1920s and '30s, cosmopolitan Shanghai was a dynamic melting pot for people, ideas and money from all over the planet. Business boomed, fortunes were made, and everything seemed possible. It was a time of breakneck industrial progress, swaggering confidence and smoky jazz venues. Thanks to economic reforms implemented in the 1980s by Deng Xiaoping, Shanghai's commercial potential has reemerged and is flourishing again. Stand today on the historic Bund and look across the Huangpu River. The soaring 1,614-ft/492-m Shanghai World Financial Center tower looms over the ambitious skyline of the Pudong financial district. Alongside it are other key landmarks: the glittering, 88- story Jinmao Building; the rocket-shaped Oriental Pearl TV Tower; and the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The 128-story Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in China (and, after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the second-tallest in the world). Glass-and-steel skyscrapers reach for the clouds, Mercedes sedans cruise the neon-lit streets, luxury- brand boutiques stock all the stylish trappings available in New York, and the restaurant, bar and clubbing scene pulsates with an energy all its own. Perhaps more than any other city in Asia, Shanghai has the confidence and sheer determination to forge a glittering future as one of the world's most important commercial centers.

  • A Case Study of Grand Theaters in Shanghai
Journal of Architecture and Urbanism ISSN 2029-7955 / eISSN 2029-7947 2020 Volume 44 Issue 1: 32–43 https://doi.org/10.3846/jau.2020.10800 PRODUCING CULTURAL SPACE IN THE CHINESE CITIES: A CASE STUDY OF GRAND THEATERS IN SHANGHAI * Charlie Qiuli XUE , Cong SUN , Lujia ZHANG City University of Hong Kong, Kowloon, Hong Kong Received 12 July 2019; accepted 12 November 2019 Abstract. Following the rapid pace of urbanisation, Chinese cities have launched a new wave of large-scale infrastructure, including cultural building construction. From 1998 to 2015, more than 360 grand theaters were built together with librar- ies, museums and children’s palaces. The number of newly built theaters may have been more than the total sum built in Europe over the past 70 years. Through case studies of theaters built in Shanghai, this paper penetrates the phenomenon of the “heat of cultural buildings” and discovers the history, intentions and effects of these theaters on Chinese cities. Fol- lowing on-site investigation of the city and theaters, the materials of theater building in China are presented. Theaters of various types are discussed in the framework of urban space, design language and consumerist culture. The authors find that the rapid growth of cultural facilities epitomises the ambition and strong implementation of Chinese (and Asian) gov- ernments in the wave of urbanisation and globalization. Keywords: cultural space, Chinese cities, grand theaters, Shanghai. Introduction and the total construction cost is about RMB 100 billion yuan (around USD 16 billion).1 With the opening ceremony held on August 27, 1998, Why and how have so many grand theaters been built Shanghai Grand Theater marked the beginning of a so quickly? How were those designs selected in the process unique movement of theater construction in China.
