n the second year of offering recruiting fairs and seminars, despite stumbling a bit with scheduling, attendance was up and increased opportunities for student athletes were presented. Plan to take part in next December’s events that put college recruiters together with high school coaches in one place Ifor a couple hours. Given the continual reduction of both high school budgets and college recruiting budgets, the fairs offer an inexpensive alternative for personally getting information about your student athletes out to college coaches. In addition to the fair, the seminars for underclassmen (both guys and girls) through middle school students offers student athletes solid advice for how to prepare for college eligibility and the recruiting process. In 2010 we would like to offer additional Fairs and Seminars in different geographic areas of the state. They are three hour events that need a school cafeteria or similar space. If you would like to help by hosting an event contact Jack Fairly at Jackson High School, [email protected], Ath Phone: (517) 841-3715. COD (Change of Direction Training)

From Daimond Dixon Grand Rapids Central HS Performance [email protected]

When I train my athletes, one of the top things we work on is C.O.D. (change of direction) Training. Why? Name the sport: football, soccer, hockey, lacrosse - they all rely on explosive change of direction from moment to moment. And training for that change of direction in order to make a great play is critical to success. Use the set up below with cones 5 yards apart to train your C.O.D. There are 3 different phases that begin at each change of direction. Use the drills below to insert into the set up. For example: Sprint/sprint/sprint (Sprint from cone A to Cone B, sprint from Cone B to Cone C, and sprint back to Cone A) Drills: • sprint/shuffle/backpedal • shuffle/sprint/shuffle Three Cones at five yards apart. • sprint/shuffle/sprint • backpedal/sprint/backpedal • shuffle/backpedal/sprint • backpedal/backpedal/sprint

C.O.D. Tips: 1. Start from a variety of different stances (2-point, 3-point, square, etc.) 2. Keep your arms moving with elbows pumping in and out of turns 3. Stay on your power pads (balls of your feet) 4. At each change of direction, get your head around and look to the next cone with your eyes 5. Add the use of catching, dribbling or throwing a ball when you return to Cone A Available at Michigan High School MHSFCA.com COACHES Association Hall of Fame Criteria for application: Only persons who have coached and/ or directed a secondary school athletic program for 25 years or Alliance Award Nomination Form more and actively coached in Michigan for a minimum of 10 years are eligible for the Hall of Fame.
