From Stories to Worlds: The Continuity of Marvel Superheroes from Comics to Film David Sweeney, June 2013 Before its 2011 re-launch as the ‘New 52’ DC Comics’ advertising campaigns regularly promoted their inter-linked superhero line as ‘The Original Universe’. As DC did indeed publish the first ‘superteam’, the JSA (in All-Star Comics 3, Winter 1940), this is technically correct; however, the concept of a shared fictional world with an on-going fictive history, what comic book fans and professionals alike refer to as ‘continuity’, was in fact pioneered by DC’s main competitor, Marvel Comics, particularly in the 1960s. In this essay I will discuss, drawing on theories and concepts from the narratologists David A. Brewer and Lubomir Dolezel and with particular focus on the comic book writer Roy Thomas, how Marvel Comics developed this narrative strategy and how it has recently been transplanted to cinema through the range of superhero films produced by Marvel Studios. Superhero Origins Like DC, Marvel emerged from an earlier publishing company, Timely Publications, which had produced its own range of superheroes during the so-called ‘Golden Age of superhero comics, ushered in by the debut of Superman in Action Comics 1 in June, 1938) and lasting until the end of World War II, including Namor the Submariner, Captain America, and The Human Torch. Superhero comics declined sharply in popularity after the War and none of these characters survived the wave of cancellations that hit the genre; however, they were not out of print for long. PRIVILEGED ATTORNEY-CLIENT COMMUNICATION EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SECOND AMENDED AND RESTATED LICENSE AGREEMENT (“SPIDER-MAN”) CREATIVE ISSUES This memo summarizes certain terms of the Second Amended and Restated License Agreement (“Spider-Man”) between SPE and Marvel, effective September 15, 2011 (the “Agreement”). 1. CHARACTERS AND OTHER CREATIVE ELEMENTS: a. Exclusive to SPE: . The “Spider-Man” character, “Peter Parker” and essentially all existing and future alternate versions, iterations, and alter egos of the “Spider- Man” character. All fictional characters, places structures, businesses, groups, or other entities or elements (collectively, “Creative Elements”) that are listed on the attached Schedule 6. All existing (as of 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that are “Primarily Associated With” Spider-Man but were “Inadvertently Omitted” from Schedule 6. The Agreement contains detailed definitions of these terms, but they basically conform to common-sense meanings. If SPE and Marvel cannot agree as to whether a character or other creative element is Primarily Associated With Spider-Man and/or were Inadvertently Omitted, the matter will be determined by expedited arbitration. All newly created (after 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that first appear in a work that is titled or branded with “Spider-Man” or in which “Spider-Man” is the main protagonist (but not including any team- up work featuring both Spider-Man and another major Marvel character that isn’t part of the Spider-Man Property). Vanessa Peters The Shields of Achilles and Aeneas: The Worlds Portrayed by Homer and Vergil The epic simile is a common device in epic poetry; it forms a relationship between two un- likely things and causes one to be viewed through the lens of the other. Unlike a normal simile, an epic simile has a fully developed vehicle that reflects the complexity back on the tenor; that is, an epic sim- ile, in its increased length and depth, can have layers of complexity that a normal simile cannot. The shield of Achilles (Hom. Il. 18.558-709) in Book 18 of Homer’s Iliad and the shield of Aeneas (Verg. Aen. 8.738-858) in book 8 of Vergil’s Aeneid are examples of epic similes, in which the poet takes the role of the god who forges the shield and can comment on society unobtrusively.1 These shields convey different perspectives of Greek and Roman society. Whereas Homer shows the world of peace in con- trast to the world of war to illustrate the tragedy of the Iliad, Vergil expresses Roman triumphalism to glorify Rome and her people. Book 18 of the Iliad marks a turning point in the epic. In it, Achilles decides to return to bat- tle in order to avenge Patroclus’ death by killing Hector. Since he has lost his armour to the enemy, his mother Thetis, knowing that his fate is sealed, beseeches Hephaestus to forge him a new set (Il. 18.534). The god agrees to her request and sets out to work, creating a magnificent shield for Achilles to wear in battle. -

Westford Preservation Plan National Register Forge Village Historic District Description Introduction Forge Village is an industrial and residential village in the town of Westford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. It is the location of the former Abbot Worsted Mill that comprises the central architectural feature of the village. A branch of the former Boston and Maine Railroad passes through the village along the banks of Stony Brook. Architectural resources consist of moderate to well-preserved residential, institutional, commercial and industrial properties built during the Colonial to Early Modern Periods. Most buildings are either multiple or single unit factory worker housing but several commercial and industrial resources exist as well as a former religious mission, a historic playground and two former schools. Two hundred seventy-four historic buildings exist in the district. One historic site and five historic structures are also present. Architectural styles include Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival, Second Empire Victorian Eclectic, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Bungalow and Cape Cod. Boundaries of the district are determined by changes in density of historic resources and by topographic changes. The town of Westford is located in the coastal lowland region of the commonwealth, approximately 10 miles south of the New Hampshire border and 30 miles west of Boston. The town is bordered on the east by Chelmsford, on the south by Acton and Carlisle, on the west by Groton and Littleton and on the north by Tyngsborough. The area of the town is 31 square miles. The village is set along the banks of Stony Brook and on the sloping hills to the north and south. -

The Oracle and Cult of Ares in Asia Minor Matthew Gonzales ERODOTUS never fails to fascinate with his rich and detailed descriptions of the varied peoples and nations H mustered against Greece by Xerxes;1 but one of his most tantalizing details, a brief notice of the existence of an oracle of Ares somewhere in Asia Minor, has received little comment. This is somewhat understandable, as the name of the proprietary people or nation has disappeared in a textual lacuna, and while restoring the name of the lost tribe has ab- sorbed the energies of some commentators, no moderns have commented upon the remarkable and unexpected oracle of Ares itself. As we shall see, more recent epigraphic finds can now be adduced to show that this oracle, far from being the fantastic product of logioi andres, was merely one manifestation of Ares’ unusual cultic prominence in south/southwestern Asia Minor from “Homeric” times to Late Antiquity.
