THE FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD HURCH C ATHOLIC ATHOLIC C RINITY RINITY T Christmas 2020 We ask that you RETURN this booklet to the OLY OLY tables at the back of the Church, so that others may use it at later Masses. H __________________________________________________________ 1 WELCOME TO HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH! Please use this leaflet in order to fully participate in the celebration of the liturgies of Christmas. Besides congregational singing, much music at Holy Trinity is sung by the Schola Cantorum. At times the Schola acts as the Assembly’s representative, presenting its prayer before God. Music not found in this leaflet is so marked, and is found in the Breaking Bread book in the pews. Guidelines for the Reception of Communion may be found in the front cover of Breaking Bread. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we ask that you be mindful of others near you and keep your nose and mouth covered AT ALL TIMES while in the Church. 2 _____________________________________________________________________________________________ CHRISTMAS EVE: Midnight Mass + December 24, 2020 + MUSIC OF THE SEASON 11:30 P. M . In dulci jubilo a 8 MICHAEL PRAETORIUS (c. 1571—1621) (translated from Latin & German) In quiet joy now sing with hearts aglow! Our delight and pleasure lies in a manger. Like sunshine is our treasure in the Mother’s lap. Thou art Alpha and Omega! Heinrich Seuse (1295—1366) Wassail Song RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS (1872—1958) Traditional Gloucestershire Christmas carol OFFERTORY HYMN The First Nowell, the angel did say Tune: THE FIRST NOWELL The First Nowell JOHNarr. LSirONGHURST David Willcocks (b. 1940) 1. The first Nowell the angel did say 2. They looked up and saw a star, Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; Shining in the east, beyond them far; In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep, And to the earth it gave great light, On a cold winter’s night that was so deep: And so it continued both day and night: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell! Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell! Born is the King of Israel! Born is the King of Israel! 3. Then entered in those wise men three 4. Then let us all with one accord Full reverently upon their knee, Sing praises to our heav’nly Lord, And offered there in his presence That hath made heav’n and earth of naught, Their gold, and myrrh and frankincense. And with his blood mankind hath bought: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell! Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell! Born is the King of Israel! Born is the King of Israel! PREFACE ACCLAMATION 3 SANCTUS Missa ad Præsepe MALCOLM MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION GREAT AMEN Ding! Dong! Merrily on high ANDREW MEGILL (b. 1965) Ding! Dong! Merrily on high: In Heav’n the bells are ringing! Ding! Dong! Verily the sky is riv’n with angel singing. Gloria! Hosanna in excelsis! E’en so here below, below, let steeple bells be swungen, And “Io, io io!” by priest and people sungen. Gloria! Hosanna in excelsis! Pray you, dutifully prime your Matin chyme, ye ringers; May you beautifully rhyme your evetime song, ye singers! Gloria! Hosanna in excelsis! In freezing winter night (fr. Ceremony of Carols) BENJAMIN BRITTEN (1913—1976) Behold, a silly tender Babe, in freezing Winter night, In homely manger trembling lies: Alas, a piteous sight! The inns are full; no man will yield this little pilgrim bed. But forced he is with silly beasts in crib to shroud his head. This stable is a Prince’s Court—this crib his Chair of State; The beasts are parcel of his pomp—the wooden dish his plate. The persons in that poor attire His royal liveries wear; The Prince Himself is come from Heav’n; this pomp is prizèd there. With joy approach, O Christian Wight: Do homage to thy King, And highly priase His humble pomp, wich he from Heav’n doth bring. Robert Southwell, c. 1595 The Shepherds’ Carol BOB CHILCOTT (b. 1955) We stood on the hills, Lady, our day’s work done: Watching the frosted meadows that winter had won. The evening was calm, Lady, the air so still: Silence more lovely than music folded the hill. There was a Star, Lady, shone in the night: Larger than Venus it was and bright, so bright. Oh, a voice from the sky, Lady, it seemed to us then: Telling of God being born in the world of men. And so we have come, Lady, our day’s work done: Our love, our hopes, ourselves, we give to your Son. Clive Sansom (1910—1981) Seek him that maketh the Seven Stars JONATHAN DOVE (b. 1959) Seek him that maketh the Seven Stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning. Alleluia! Yea, the darkness shineth as the day; the night is light about me!
