New Family Ministry Coordinator at SS Peter & Paul Parish: LaTanya Bacon

As Fr. John wrote in his pastor’s letter last week, we have hired LaTanya Bacon to be our new Family Ministry Coordinator at SS Peter & Paul. LaTanya is a mother of two girls, Grace (11) and Joy (4), who both attend Catholic East, and wife to Patrick. She spent 30 years as an active member in a Protestant church, where she mentored other adults, worked in Children’s Ministry and led Bible Study groups. She and her family were drawn to the because of the witness of several Catholic friends and neighbors. After exploring the faith through RCIA, LaTanya and her family entered the Catholic Church at SS Peter & Paul, Easter of 2019. LaTanya's family has been active in UPLIFT Families, Beacon Moms and Bacon Dads since then.

LaTanya's part-time position will be focused primarily to restart Children's Liturgy of the Word at SS Peter & Paul this fall, in addition to her continued work as a Core Team member and leader in Beacon Moms. Community Ministry Connection

This week we continue sharing the history of our Community Ministry Connection partner, the Riverwest Food Pantry Urban Farm and our Community Gardens. Over the years various partnerships have developed in the community, sometimes they have lasted just for a season, and sometimes they have borne fruit for many years. Some of those partnerships include an annual “Feed for Seeds” fundraiser sponsored by the YNot Bar II; ongoing partnerships with the Victory Gardens Initiative and Riverside High School Gardening Club; and the generous donation of garden plots by neighbors of St. Casimir. Very significantly, the other new garden, or really farm, is located at Maglio Companies on Port Washington Road. At this location, the Urban Farm, there are 11 hoop houses that are being managed and farmed by Anna Metscher and Anna Jean Hallmann for the Riverwest Food Pantry, along with Samson Srok from Groundwork Milwaukee. In 2020, the farm grew produce during the winter months in two hoop houses and harvested through the winter and early spring. In 2021, most of the hoop houses were used to grow produce for the Riverwest Food Pantry throughout the winter and early spring. Now in 2021, all of the hoop houses are being used to grow produce for the pantry, which is harvested on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Overall, the purpose of the Community Gardens and Urban Farm is to provide hands-on opportunity for shoppers and parishioners to engage in caring for God’s creation, develop relationships in our faith community as well as the neighborhood, provide fresh produce for the Riverwest Food Pantry and be a more visual sign of faith in our community.

We hope that you have enjoyed this month’s Community Ministry Connection highlighting the Riverwest Food Pantry Urban Farm and our Community Gardens! Please continue to pray for the continued sustainability of the Riverwest Food Pantry Urban Farm so that it can be fruitful and yield plentiful crops for years to come. To review the information shared throughout this month, please visit our parish website and follow the Riverwest Food Pantry on Facebook or LinkedIn! If you have questions about this month’s Community Ministry Connection, please email Laura Hancock at [email protected].

Love Thy Neighbor

Congratulations to Rev. Bryan Massingale for recently being chosen from a slate of 30 nominees for the 2021 Teacher of Peace Award by USA! Fr. Massingale, a Black priest of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, was born, raised, educated, ministered and taught in the city of Milwaukee before he began a professorship in theological and social ethics at Fordham University in 2016. He authored the 2010 book, Racial Justice and the Catholic Church, and is well known as an expert in Catholic Social Thought and Racial Justice. President of Pax Christi USA, Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conv., praised Rev. Massingale in this way: “He is clearly a Teacher of Peace and calls each of us all to work for genuine peace with justice. His prophetic voice is needed at this moment in our history...” If you’d like to get connected with the Racial Justice & Healing Committee that is sponsoring the “Love Thy Neighbor” articles, please email Laura Hancock at [email protected].

Outdoor Prayer Service Out of the Depths: Offering Our Questions to God

You are invited to join Awake Milwaukee on Thursday, August 12 at 7:00 pm for a special outdoor prayer service focusing on the questions that the abuse crisis in the Catholic Church raises for each of us. This time of prayer will include a friendly atmosphere, simple Taize-style music, words by abuse survivor Larry Normann, and time for personal reflection. We will end the evening with refreshments and an opportunity to meet and mingle with fellow Catholics who care about this issue. For details and to RSVP, please visit awakemilwaukee.org/prayer. Please email Laura Hancock at [email protected] with questions.
