Seasonal distribution of moths of the Koakoland (Mopane) Savanna in Ogongo, northern Namibia Grzegorz KOPIJ Department of Wildlife Management, University of Namibia, Katima Mulilio Campus, Private Bag 1096, Katima Mulilo, Namibia; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: During the years 2011–2013, moths were collected in Koakoland (Mopane) Savanna in the Cuvelai Drainage System, Ovamboland, northern Namibia. In total, 77 species from 13 families have been identified. Their seasonal occurrence in this habitat was also investigated, with most species recorded in wet season between September and April, but with clear peak in February and March. The family Noctuidae was by far the most speciose (38 recorded species), followed by Crambidae (8 spp.), Sphingidae (6 spp.) and Arctiidae (4 spp.). All other families were represented by 1–3 species. For each species listed date of collection is given, and data on its global distribution. Lepidoptera fauna of Namibia has recently attracted attention of European entomologists. However, thorough surveys were conducted hitherto in a few areas only, such as Brandberg and Hobatere. The northern regions of the country were especially badly neglected. Poanes melane (Edwards), the umber skipper [formerly Para try tone melane (Burns 1992)], is found along the Coastal Range of California and in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. In rural areas adults are found in grassy habitats along streams and in forests (Emmel & Emmel 1973). This species is common in urban and suburban areas, most likely because its host plants (grasses; Poaceae) are abundant and well-maintained in lawns (Heppner 1972, Brown 1984). This source of host plants could become especially important during the summer generation, a dry season in California when many grasses are no longer green. Poanes melane larvae are known to feed on several Cs and C, grasses, including Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. (C,), Deschampsia caespitosa (L.) Beauv. (Ca), Lamarckia aurea L. (Moench) (Ca), and Stenotaphrum secundatum Kuntze (C,), and one sedge (Cyperaceae), Carex spissa Bailey (Brown 1984, Scott 1986). Adult female P. melane lay eggs singly on the undersurfaces of grass blades. The mature larva is approximately 30 mm long with a brown head and dusky yellow-green or tan body mottled with black punctations of varying sizes (Comstock & Dammers 1931, Emmel & Emmel 1973). Larvae have a blackish mid-dorsal line, a cream lateral stripe, and three dark lines on each side (Scott 1976). -

ARIZONA WILDLIFE CONSERVATION ARIZONA WILDLIFE NOTEBOOK GARRY ROGERS Praise for Arizona Wildlife Notebook “Arizona Wildlife Notebook” by Garry Rogers is a comprehensive checklist of wildlife species existing in the State of Arizona. This notebook provides a brief description for each of eleven (11) groups of wildlife, conservation status of all extant species within that group in Arizona, alphabetical listing of species by common name, scientific names, and room for notes. “The Notebook is a statewide checklist, intended for use by wildlife watchers all over the state. As various individuals keep track of their personal observations of wildlife in their specific locality, the result will be a more selective checklist specific to that locale. Such information would be vitally useful to the State Wildlife Conservation Department, as well as to other local agencies and private wildlife watching groups. “This is a very well-documented snapshot of the status of wildlife species – from bugs to bats – in the State of Arizona. Much of it should be relevant to neighboring states, as well, with a bit of fine-tuning to accommodate additions and deletions to the list. “As a retired Wildlife Biologist, I have to say Rogers’ book is perhaps the simplest to understand, yet most comprehensive in terms of factual information, that I have ever had occasion to peruse. This book should become the default checklist for Arizona’s various state, federal and local conservation agencies, and the basis for developing accurate local inventories by private enthusiasts as well as public agencies. "Arizona Wildlife Notebook" provides a superb starting point for neighboring states who may wish to emulate Garry Rogers’ excellent handiwork. -

Larvae of these species were collected from an organic farming or abandoned persimmon orchard in Changwon and Jinju cities, Gyeongnam province, and reared for the identification in the laboratory. Some information, such as collection records, hosts, simple morphological characteristics, and ecology were introduced for each species. Of the five species treated, four species are de- scribed as new: L. nigrilineata sp. n., L. solivaga sp. n., L. subtrapezia sp. n. and L. viridis sp. n. A diagnosis of L. muscosalis (Walker, 1866) is given. Photographs of adults and the genitalia are provided, along with a key to the five Chinese species treated. Keywords Description, diagnosis, key, morphology, taxonomy Introduction Locastra Walker, 1859 was established in the Noctuoidea to accommodate four species: L. maimonalis Walker, 1859, L. phereciusalis Walker, 1858, L. sagarisalis Walker, 1858, and L. haraldusalis Walker, 1859. Only the first species, L. maimonalis, still remains in this genus. Hampson (1896a) designated L. maimonalis as the type species and transferred Locastra to the Epipaschiinae in the Pyralidae. -

De distribución principalmente subtropical, comprenden unas 700 especies a nivel mundial, siendo 273 las especies conocidas para el viejo mundo (SOLIS, 1992).
