hen he entered Roach enjoys the team-first culture the AFL system at North Ballarat. as a teenager, the last thing on WTom Roach’s mind was playing 100 VFL games or relocating to Ballarat. Six years after he was drafted by Richmond under the father-son rule, Roach, who this weekend brings up his century of VFL matches – the bulk of them for North Ballarat – has done both. Furthermore, he’s more than comfortable with how things have unfolded. When the Tigers delisted him after 11 AFL games in three seasons, Roach was inundated with clubs from all around Australia trying to entice him, but he was keen to stay close to family and friends. Once he decided to stay in Victoria and continue his career at VFL level, Roach’s priority was to play for a club that didn’t have a full alignment with an AFL club. He noted from his Former Tiger experience at Richmond and the Coburg Tigers that selection weighed heavily in the favour notches century of AFL players, irrespective of form. Add Chris Lamb, Peter Summers and and you had the nucleus of a team to take Sandringham to great heights. It’s a considerable factor as to why North Ballarat goes into this year’s finals series looking to join Sandringham as back-to- back premiers. North Ballarat, under the astute tutelage of Gerard FitzGerald, boasts the most experienced core group of VFL players. There are many clauses in a player’s finals eligibility, but Wise heads prevail basically it boils down to the fact that there is a maximum of 12 AFL-listed players and rookies, in September and a minimum of 10 VFL players required in September. The 32-year-old finished the season with 71 goals to give him his third ‘Frosty’ Miller Medal since he turned 30. It is the eighth time that Sautner has kicked more than 70 goals in a season, with his career-best being 93 goals in 2002 when playing for Frankston. Sautner has now won the ‘Frosty’ Miller Medal six times in a Sandringham jumper, matching the record of Miller, whose six titles were all for Dandenong. The veteran finished seven goals ahead of 2008 Liston Trophy winner James Podsiadly, who injured himself in the opening quarter of the round 18 match against the North Bullants and did not play again during the home and away season. While other teams are vulnerable when the maximum 12 AFL players/ minimum 10 VFL players rule is introduced in the finals, Williamstown is as well equipped as any team. Gotch’s problem is fitting all Williamstown’s VFL players into the starting 22. And, that promises to be telling against the Northern Bullants, whose VFL experience is questionable. While Adam Iacobucci, Jason Saddington, Jarrod McCorkell and David Boundy are proven performers, the bottom half of the Bullants’ VFL contingent lacks the exposure of Williamstown’s group. And while the VFL Hawks roll into the finals on the back of five consecutive wins, matched only by minor premier North Ballarat, their elimination final foe Geelong has slumped at the wrong time of the season. Admittedly, three of Box Hill’s wins were against the Coburg Tigers, Frankston and Bendigo Bombers, but its two other wins – against Port Melbourne and the Casey Scorpions – underscored that the club can hold its own. The Box Hill Hawks had to dig deep in both of the aforementioned victories, rallying against the odds. With a couple of minor variations, that’s how the elimination final between the Casey Scorpions and Collingwood shapes up. While finals rules dictate that aligned clubs can have no more than 12 AFL-listed players, with a minimum of 10 VFL players required, the Scorpions will literally only have a handful of players available from affiliate Melbourne. Conversely, Collingwood will boast a team where, apart from its rookies, only a couple of players – Jarrad Blight and Luke Rounds – have no AFL experience. However, this cut-throat final will be anything but a mismatch. While Casey goes into the match with just one win from its past four – Collingwood has won three of its 2nd Elimination Final Preview past four – two of the Scorpions’ loses were by less than a kick.
